Abstract
Preparations of synthetic mixtures of organic substances with food attraction and use thereof for attracting insects of economical importance in field conditions The present invention regards the attractiveness of female and male insects of economical importance, such as the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata), the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) etc. of the Tephritidae family, as well as of other insects of economical importance belonging to other families. The mechanism of attractiveness of the insects relates to the sensitivity thereof towards attractants produced from various products of the Maillard reaction between amino acids, amines, urea and reducing sugars. These preparations are obtained by treatment of simple organic substances that are commercially available and of low purchase cost. In biological agriculture, the use of these attractants aims at replacing plant-protection substances in various cultivations, thereby making the biotechnological control of these insects stand-alone. The action of the above-mentioned preparations is similar to that of the various food sources as the honeydews which, under normal conditions, are secreted from plants and/or insects and attract insects. The appropriate exploitation of the above preparations results in a significant reduction of chemical insecticides, which are widely used in plant protection, thereby protecting the physical environment with similar insecticidal results and lower cost.
