Description

This invention relates to a travel aid for a traveler.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a travel aid for a traveler which includes :- a light occluding means for occluding light from a traveler's eyes;
a sound attenuating means for attenuating the passage of sound to a traveler's ears;
a head support means for supporting a travelers head; and
connecting means for interconnecting and allowing relative displacement between the light occluding means, sound attenuating means and head supporting means.
The light occluding means may be in the form of a pair of eye covers which are of generally arcuate or concave form and which are shaped and/or configured to cover an eye socket region of a traveler defined between a traveler's nose, cheek and eyebrow. The eye cover may be formed from any suitable synthetic plastic and/or foam material. More particularly, the eye covers are configured such that when mounted over the eye region and depressed lightly in a central region thereof, a suction is created between the edge of the cover and the eye socket region to retain the eye covers in position over the traveler's eye. Further, the eye covers are configured and dimensioned so as to be spaced away from the eyelashes of the traveler in the operative position. l The sound attenuating means it may be in form of a pair of ear muffs having recesses defined therein for receiving the traveler's ears therein. The ear muffs may be formed from any suitable synthetic plastic and/or foamed material which is configured to be resiliently deformable when for example, a traveler rests his head against a surface. More particularly, the material may be memory foam. Further, the recesses may be dimensioned such that a traveler's ear does not come into contact with the inner surface of the recess even when the traveler rests his head on a surface.
The head supporting means may be in the form of any conventional inflatable and/or hollowform headrest and/or pillow currently available on the market.
The connecting means may include an elongate, elastic member which is configured to extend between and interconnect the eye covers and ear muffs so that when the eye covers and ear muffs are in on operative position on the traveler, they surround the head of the traveler and retain same in position on the head. The connecting means may further include an elongate, preferably elastic, member which extends between and interconnects the first mentioned elastic member and head supporting means.
A tensioning member may be provided to permit further tensioning of the first mentioned elastic member and to facilitate retention of the eye covers and ear muffs in position in accordance with a traveler's requirements. According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a travel aid for a traveler which includes:- an elongate sheath which is configured to circumscribe a traveler's head through the eye and ear regions, the sheath defining a pair of pockets which are configured to receive sound attenuating means therein and light occluding means for occluding light from the traveler's eyes;
a head support means for supporting a travelers head; and
connecting means for interconnecting and allowing relative displacement between the sheath and the head supporting means.
The sheath may be formed from velvet, silk, cotton and/ or satin material. The sheath may be filled with any suitable hollowform, filler and/or cushioning material such as for example, wool, cotton, foam and air.
The light occluding means may be in the form of a mask which is configured to overlay and extend just beyond the eye regions bounded by a traveler's nose, cheek and eyebrow. The mask may have a generally V-shaped cut-away for receiving a traveller's nose complementally therein and which serves to aid comfort and light occlusion in the operative position.
The sound attenuating means it may be in form of a pair of ear muffs having recesses defined therein for receiving the traveler's ears therein. The ear muffs may be formed from any suitable synthetic plastic and/or foamed material which is configured to be resiliently deformable when for example, a traveler rests his head against a harder surface object. More particularly, the material may be memory foam. Further, the recesses of ear muffs may be dimensioned such that a traveler's ear does not come into contact with the inner surface of the recess even when the traveler rests his head on a surface.
Typically, the material used to form the sheath may be adhered or arranged to follow the surface of the recess in the ear muffs.
A tensioning member, preferably in the form of an elastic drawstring, may be provided to tension and retain the sheath and with it the mask and ear muffs, in desired position on a traveler's head.
A travel aid in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figures 1 to 3 show three dimensional schematics of a travel aid in accordance with the invention.
Referring now to Figure 1, reference numeral 10 generally depicts a travel aid in accordance with the invention. The travel aid 10 includes a light occluding means the form of a pair of eye covers 12 for occluding light from a traveler's eyes, a sound attenuating means in form of a pair of ear muffs 14 for attenuating the passage of sound to a traveler's ears, a head support means in the form of a conventional travel pillow 16 for supporting a travelers head and connecting means in the form of elastic members 18 for interconnecting and allowing relative displacement between the eye covers 12, ear muffs 14 and pillow 16. The eye covers 12 are of generally arcuate or concave form and which are shaped and/or configured to cover an eye socket region of a traveler defined between a traveler's nose, cheek and eyebrow. The eye covers are formed from any suitable synthetic plastic and/or foam material which is flexible. More particularly, the eye covers 12 are configured such that when mounted over the eye region and depressed lightly in a central region thereof, a suction is created between an edge region 20 of the cover 12 and the eye socket region to retain the eye covers 12 in position over the traveler's eye. Further, the eye covers 12 are configured and dimensioned so as to be spaced away from the eyelashes of the traveler in an operative position on the traveler.
The ear muffs 14 have recesses 22 defined therein for receiving the traveler's ears therein. The ear muffs 14 are formed from any suitable synthetic plastic and/or foamed material which is configured to be resiliently deformable when for example, a traveler rests his head against a surface. More particularly, the material is memory foam. Further, the recesses 22 are dimensioned such that a traveler's ear does not come into contact with an inner surface 24 of the recess 22 even when the traveler rests his head on a surface. The pillow 16 is typically any conventional inflatable and/or hollowform or hollowfill headrest and/or travel pillow currently available on the market.
The elastic member 18 is configured to extend between and interconnect the eye covers 12 and ear muffs 14 so that when the eye covers 12 and ear muffs 14 are in on operative position on the traveler, they surround the head of the traveler and retain same in position on the traveler's head. The connecting means further includes an elongate, preferably elastic, member 26 which extends between and interconnects elastic member 18 and the pillow 16.
A tensioning member 28 is provided to permit further tensioning of the elastic member 18 to facilitate retention of the eye covers 12 and ear muffs 14 in position in accordance with a traveler's requirements.

The sheath 112 is typically formed from from any one or more of velvet, silk, cotton and/ or satin materials. The sheath 1 12 is typically filled with any suitable hollowform, filler and/or cushioning material such as for example, wool, cotton, foam and air.
The mask 1 18 is configured to overlay and extend just beyond the eye regions bounded by a traveler's nose, cheek and eyebrow. The mask 1 18 has a generally V-shaped cut-away 122 for receiving a traveller's nose complementally therebetween and which serves to aid comfort and light occlusion in an operative position as shown in Figure 2.
Typically, the material used to form the sheath 1 12 is adhered or arranged to follow the surface 24 of the recess 22 defines in the ear muffs 14.
A tensioning member (not shown) similar to that shown in Figure 1 is provided to tension and facilitate retention of the sheath 112 and with it the mask 118 and ear muffs 14, in desired position on a traveler's head.
Referring now to Figure 3, reference numeral 210 generally depicts a travel aid for a traveler which is similar in most respects to the travel aid 1 10 shown in Figure 2. More particularly, tensioning, adjustment and/or retention of the sheath 1 12 is achieved via a releasable Velcro ® fastening arrangement 212 which serves to connect eye covers 214 of the mask 218.
It is to be appreciated that a travel aid in accordance with the invention is not limited to the precise constructional and functional details as herein described and as shown in the drawings and which may be varied as desired.
