Description

画像表示装置およびその制御方法
 本発明は、画像表示装置およびその制御方法に関し、特に、バックライトの輝度を制御する機能(バックライト調光機能)を有する画像表示装置およびその制御方法に関する。
 液晶表示装置など、バックライトを備える画像表示装置では、入力画像に基づきバックライトの輝度を制御することにより、バックライトの消費電力を抑制し、表示画像の画質を改善することができる。特に、画面を複数のエリアに分割し、エリア内の入力画像に基づき、当該エリアに対応したバックライト光源の輝度を制御することにより、さらなる低消費電力化と高画質化が可能となる。以下、このようにエリア内の入力画像に基づきバックライト光源の輝度を制御しながら、表示パネルを駆動する方法を、以下では「エリアアクティブ駆動」という。なおこのエリアアクティブ駆動は、ローカルディミング駆動とも呼ばれる。
 エリアアクティブ駆動を行う画像表示装置では、バックライト光源として、RGB3色のLED(Light Emitting Diode)や白色LEDが使用されることが多い。各エリアに対応したLEDの輝度(発光時の輝度)は、当該各エリア内の画素の輝度の最大値や平均値などに基づいて求められ、LEDデータとしてバックライト用の駆動回路に与えられる。また、そのLEDデータと入力画像とに基づいて表示用データ(液晶表示装置であれば、液晶の光透過率を制御するためのデータ)が生成され、当該表示用データは表示パネル用の駆動回路に与えられる。画面上における各画素の輝度は、液晶表示装置の場合には、バックライトからの光の輝度と表示用データに基づく光透過率との積になる。
 以上のような液晶表示装置によれば、入力画像に基づき好適な表示用データとLEDデータを求め、表示用データに基づき液晶の光透過率を制御し、LEDデータに基づき各エリアに対応したLEDの輝度を制御することにより、入力画像を液晶パネルに表示することができる。また、エリア内の画素の輝度が小さいときには、当該エリアに対応するLEDの輝度を小さくすることにより、バックライトの消費電力を低減することができる。
 なお、本件発明に関連して、以下の先行技術文献が知られている。日本特開2005-338857号公報には、複数の分割領域別に光を発するLEDからなるバックライト装置を備えた液晶表示装置の発明が開示されている。また日本特開2001-142409号公報には、複数の分割領域に少なくとも1つのLEDを配置し、照明の必要のない領域には照明光を照射しない液晶表示装置の発明が開示されている。

 しかし、上記従来例では、温度変化により液晶の透過率が変化するので、理想的なγ特性に合わせて入力画像データが補正される場合であっても、表示画像において理想的なγ特性が得られるわけではない。
 この点、上記従来例において、入力画像に対して温度補償のための補正を行うことも考えられる。しかし、上記従来例では、前述したように入力画像に基づき表示用データだけでなくLEDデータも求められることから、上記補正を行うと、表示データについての温度補償は実現されるとしてもLEDデータが異常な値に変更されることになり、その結果として表示画像が異常になる(例えば黄色みを帯びた表示状態となる)。
 また、上記従来例のようなエリアアクティブ駆動では、同一階調の表示を行う場合であっても、各エリアにおけるLEDの発光輝度が異なる場合があり、その場合には各エリアにおける液晶の透過率が異なることになる。よって、上記温度変化による液晶の透過率の変化量は上記各エリア毎に異なる場合があり、その場合には、表示画像にはエリア毎の輝度ムラとして目立つ形で現れることになる。
 そこで、本発明は、温度補償を行いつつ輝度ムラのない正しい階調表示を行うことができる、エリアアクティブ駆動を行う画像表示装置およびその制御方法を提供することを目的とする。
 本発明の第1の局面は、バックライトの輝度を制御する機能を有する画像表示装置であって、
 複数の表示素子を含む表示パネルと、
 前記表示パネルの温度を検出する温度検出手段と、
 複数の光源を含むバックライトと、
 入力画像を複数のエリアに分割し、前記入力画像に基づき各エリアに対応した光源の発光時の輝度を示す発光輝度データを求める発光輝度算出部と、
 前記入力画像と前記発光輝度算出部により求められた前記発光輝度データとに基づき、前記表示素子の光透過率を制御するための表示用データを求める表示用データ算出部と、
 前記温度検出手段により検出される温度に基づき、温度変化による前記光透過率の変化を補償するための補正値を算出し、算出された補正値に基づき前記表示用データを補正する温度補償手段と、
 前記温度補償手段により補正された表示用データに基づき、前記表示パネルに対して前記表示素子の光透過率を制御する信号を出力するパネル駆動回路と、
 前記発光輝度データに基づき、前記バックライトに対して前記光源の輝度を制御する信号を出力するバックライト駆動回路と

 本発明の第2の局面は、本発明の第1の局面において、
 前記温度補償手段は、前記表示用データを補正することにより生じるべき輝度変化が視認されないまたは視認されにくい時点を検出するタイミング検出手段を含み、当該タイミング検出手段により検出された時点で、前記補正値を算出することを特徴とする。

 本発明の第1の局面によれば、温度補償手段により、検出温度に基づき温度変化による表示素子の光透過率の変化を補償するための補正値が算出され、算出された補正値に基づき表示用データが補正されるので、表示素子の温度補償が行われつつ、バックライトの光源輝度には影響が出ないので、エリアアクティブ駆動を行う場合に輝度ムラのない正しい階調表示を行うことができる。
 本発明の第2の局面によれば、タイミング検出手段により検出された、補正することにより生じるべき輝度変化が視認されないまたは視認されにくい時点で、補正値を(新たに)算出するので、補正値が変更されることにより輝度変化が生じる場合にも利用者は違和感を感じることなく画像を見ることができる。
 本発明の第3の局面によれば、タイミング検出手段により、入力画像の変化量が所定の閾値よりも大きいシーンチェンジ時点が検出されるので、補正することにより生じるべき輝度変化が結果的に視認されないまたは視認されにくく、利用者は違和感を感じることなく画像を見ることができる。

 本発明の第5の局面によれば、各分割表示領域毎の温度が検出され、これらの温度に基づき、各分割表示領域毎の温度変化による光透過率の変化を補償するための補正値が算出され、表示用データが補正されるので、例えば表示領域が大きいため分割領域間で温度差がある場合にも表示素子の位置に応じた温度に基づき正確に温度補償を行うことができる。
 本発明の第6の局面によれば、バックライト温度補償手段により、検出温度に基づき、温度変化による光源の輝度変化を補償するための補正値が算出され、算出された補正値に基づき発光輝度データが補正されるので、光源の温度補償を併せて行うことにより、さらに温度変化の影響を受けない正しい階調表示を行うことができる。
 本発明の第7の局面によれば、本発明の第1の局面における効果と同様の効果を画像表示装置の制御方法において奏することができる。

 以下、添付図面を参照しつつ本発明の一実施形態について説明する。
<1.1 全体的な構成および動作概要>
 図1は、本発明の一実施形態に係る液晶表示装置2の構成を示すブロック図である。図1に示す液晶表示装置2は、バックライト3、バックライト駆動回路4、パネル駆動回路6、液晶パネル7、温度センサ8、およびエリアアクティブ駆動処理部5を備えている。液晶表示装置2は、画面を複数のエリアに分割し、エリア内の入力画像に基づきバックライト光源の輝度を制御しながら、液晶パネル7を駆動するエリアアクティブ駆動を行う。以下、mとnは2以上の整数、iとjは1以上の整数、iとjのうち少なくとも一方は2以上の整数であるとする。
 液晶表示装置2には、R画像、G画像およびB画像を含む入力画像Dvが入力される。R画像、G画像およびB画像は、いずれも(m×n)個の画素の輝度を含んでいる。エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、入力画像Dvに基づき、液晶パネル7の駆動に用いる表示用データ(以下、液晶データDaという)と、バックライト3の駆動に用いるバックライト制御データ(以下、LEDデータDbという)とを求める(詳細は後述)。
 ここで、本液晶表示装置2はテレビジョン装置であって、上記入力画像Dvは、具体的には外部から与えられるカラーテレビジョン信号(映像信号)に基づき、図示されないテレビセット部(テレビ制御部)により生成される。このとき、上記テレビセット部は、映像信号に対して液晶パネル7に好適なガンマ補正曲線が得られるよう、R画像、G画像およびB画像に対してそれぞれ独立にガンマ補正を行い、上記入力画像Dvを生成する。ただし、説明の便宜のため、ここでは我が国のカラーテレビジョン信号における理想ガンマ値であるγ=2.2が使用されるものとする。
 液晶パネル7は、(m×n×3)個の表示素子Pを備えている。表示素子Pは、行方向(図1では横方向)に3m個ずつ、列方向(図1では縦方向)にn個ずつ、全体として2次元状に配置される。表示素子Pには、赤色光を透過するR表示素子、緑色光を透過するG表示素子、および、青色光を透過するB表示素子が含まれる。R表示素子、G表示素子およびB表示素子は、行方向に並べて配置され、3個で1個の画素を形成する。温度センサ8は、この液晶パネル7の温度を測定し、温度測定信号Tpを出力する。
 パネル駆動回路6は、液晶パネル7の駆動回路である。パネル駆動回路6は、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5から出力された液晶データDaに基づき、液晶パネル7に対して表示素子Pの光透過率を制御する信号(電圧信号)を出力する。パネル駆動回路6から出力された電圧は表示素子P内の画素電極(図示せず)に書き込まれ、表示素子Pの光透過率は画素電極に書き込まれた電圧に応じて変化する。
 バックライト3は、液晶パネル7の背面側に設けられ、液晶パネル7の背面にバックライト光を照射する。図2は、バックライト3の詳細を示す図である。バックライト3は、図2に示すように、(i×j)個のLEDユニット32を含んでいる。LEDユニット32は、行方向にi個ずつ、列方向にj個ずつ、全体として2次元状に配置される。LEDユニット32は、赤色LED33、緑色LED34および青色LED35を1個ずつ含む。1個のLEDユニット32に含まれる3個のLED33~35から出射された光は、液晶パネル7の背面の一部にあたる。
 バックライト駆動回路4は、バックライト3の駆動回路である。バックライト駆動回路4は、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5から出力されたLEDデータDbに基づき、バックライト3に対してLED33~35の輝度を制御する信号(電圧信号または電流信号)を出力する。LED33~35の輝度は、ユニット内およびユニット外のLEDの輝度とは独立して制御される。
 液晶表示装置2の画面は(i×j)個のエリアに分割され、1個のエリアには1個のLEDユニット32が対応づけられる。なお、1個のエリアに2個以上のLEDユニット32が対応づけられる構成であってもよい。エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、(i×j)個のエリアのそれぞれについて、エリア内のR画像に基づき、当該エリアに対応した赤色LED33の輝度を求める。同様に、緑色LED34の輝度はエリア内のG画像に基づき決定され、青色LED35の輝度はエリア内のB画像に基づき決定される。エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、バックライト3に含まれるすべてのLED33~35の輝度を求め、求めたLED輝度を表すLEDデータDbをバックライト駆動回路4に対して出力する。
 また、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、LEDデータDbに基づき、液晶パネル7に含まれるすべての表示素子Pにおけるバックライト光の輝度を求める。さらに、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、入力画像Dvとバックライト光の輝度とに基づき、液晶パネル7に含まれるすべての表示素子Pの光透過率を求め、求めた光透過率を表す液晶データDaをパネル駆動回路6に対して出力する。なお、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5におけるバックライト光の輝度の求め方についての詳しい説明は後述する。
 液晶表示装置2では、R表示素子の輝度は、バックライト3から出射される赤色光の輝度とR表示素子の光透過率との積になる。1個の赤色LED33から出射された光は、対応する1個のエリアを中心として複数のエリアに当たる。したがって、R表示素子の輝度は、複数の赤色LED33から出射された光の輝度の合計とR表示素子の光透過率との積になる。同様に、G表示素子の輝度は複数の緑色LED34から出射された光の輝度の合計とG表示素子の光透過率との積になり、B表示素子の輝度は複数の青色LED35から出射された光の輝度の合計とB表示素子の光透過率との積になる。
 以上のように構成された液晶表示装置2によれば、入力画像Dvに基づき好適な液晶データDaとLEDデータDbを求め、液晶データDaに基づき表示素子Pの光透過率を制御し、LEDデータDbに基づきLED33~35の輝度を制御することにより、入力画像Dvを液晶パネル7に表示することができる。また、エリア内の画素の輝度が小さいときには、当該エリアに対応したLED33~35の輝度を小さくすることにより、バックライト3の消費電力を低減することができる。また、エリア内の画素の輝度が小さいときには、当該エリアに対応した表示素子Pの輝度をより少数のレベル間で切り替えることにより、画像の分解能を高め、表示画像の画質を改善することができる。
<1.2 エリアアクティブ駆動処理部の構成>
 図3は、本実施形態におけるエリアアクティブ駆動処理部5の詳細な構成を示すブロック図である。エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、所定の処理を実行するための構成要素として、LED出力値算出部15と、表示輝度算出部16と、LCDデータ算出部18とを備え、所定のデータを格納するための構成要素として、輝度拡散フィルタ17および温度補償用ルックアップテーブル(以下「温度補償用LUT」と略称する)19を備えている。ここで本実施形態においては、LED出力値算出部15によって発光輝度算出部が実現され、LCDデータ算出部18によって表示用データ算出部が実現されている。なお、LED出力値算出部15にも所定のデータを格納するための構成要素が含まれている。
 LED出力値算出部15は、入力画像Dvを複数のエリアに分割し、各エリアに対応したLEDの発光時の輝度を示すLEDデータ(発光輝度データ)Dbを求める。なお、以下においては、LEDの発光時の輝度の値を「LED出力値」という。輝度拡散フィルタ17には、例えば図4に示すように、各エリアの表示輝度を算出するために光の拡散の仕方を数値で表したデータであるPSFデータが格納されている。
 表示輝度算出部16は、LED出力値算出部15で求められたLEDデータDbと輝度拡散フィルタ17に格納されているPSFデータDpとに基づいて、各エリアの表示輝度Db’を算出する。
 LCDデータ算出部18は、入力画像Dvと、表示輝度算出部16で求められた各エリアの表示輝度Db’とに基づいて、液晶データを求め、求められた液晶データに対して温度センサ8からの温度測定信号Tpに対応する温度補償用LUT19に含まれる複数のテーブルのうち適宜のテーブルを参照して温度補償を行い、液晶パネル7に含まれるすべての表示素子Pの光透過率を表す液晶データDaを求める。この温度補償については後述する。
<1.3 エリアアクティブ駆動処理部の処理手順>
 図5は、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5の処理を示すフローチャートである。エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5には、入力画像Dvに含まれるある色成分(以下、色成分Cという)の画像が入力される(ステップS11)。色成分Cの入力画像には(m×n)個の画素の輝度が含まれる。
 次に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、色成分Cの入力画像に対してサブサンプリング処理(平均化処理)を行い、(si×sj)個(sは2以上の整数)の画素の輝度を含む縮小画像を求める(ステップS12)。ステップS12では、色成分Cの入力画像は、横方向に(si/m)倍、縦方向に(sj/n)倍に縮小される。次に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、縮小画像を(i×j)個のエリアに分割する(ステップS13)。各エリアには(s×s)個の画素の輝度が含まれる。
 次に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、(i×j)個のエリアのそれぞれについてのLED出力値(LEDの発光時の輝度の値)を求める(ステップS14)。このLED出力値を決定する方法は、従来より、例えばエリア内の画素の輝度の最大値Maに基づいて決定する方法、エリア内の画素の輝度の平均値Meに基づいて決定する方法、またはエリア内の画素の輝度の最大値Maと平均値Meを加重平均することにより得られる値に基づいて決定する方法などが知られているが、本実施形態ではこのように他のエリアとの関係を無視して単純に決定するわけではなく、周囲のエリアにおけるLEDユニットの輝度を考慮してLED出力値を決定する点に特徴を有している。詳しくは後述する。なお、ステップS11からステップS14までの処理は、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5内のLED出力値算出部15で行われる。
 次に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、ステップS14で求めた(i×j)個のLED出力値に対して輝度拡散フィルタ(点拡散フィルタ)155を適用することにより、(ti×tj)個(tは2以上の整数)の表示輝度を含む第1のバックライト輝度データを求める(ステップS15)。ステップS15では、(i×j)個のLED出力値が横方向と縦方向にそれぞれt倍に拡大されて、(ti×tj)個の表示輝度が求められている。なお、ステップS15の処理は、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5内の表示輝度算出部16で行われる。
 次に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、第1のバックライト輝度データに対して線形補間処理を行うことにより、(m×n)個の輝度を含む第2のバックライト輝度データを求める(ステップS16)。ステップS16では、第1のバックライト輝度データは、横方向に(m/ti)倍、横方向に(n/tj)倍に拡大される。第2のバックライト輝度データは、(i×j)個の色成分CのLEDがステップS14で求めた輝度で発光したときに、(m×n)個の色成分Cの表示素子Pに入射する色成分Cのバックライト光の輝度を表す。
 次に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、色成分Cの入力画像に含まれる(m×n)個の画素の輝度を、それぞれ、第2のバックライト輝度データに含まれる(m×n)個の輝度で割ることにより、(m×n)個の色成分Cの表示素子Pの光透過率Tを求める(ステップS17)。
 続いてエリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、ステップS17で求めた(m×n)個の光透過率を表す液晶データに対して、温度補償用LUT19を参照し、温度センサ8により検出された温度に応じた温度補償を行い、最終的な光透過率を表す液晶データDaを求める温度補償処理を行う(ステップS18)。なお、ステップS16からステップS18までの処理は、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5内のLCDデータ算出部18で行われる。
 最後に、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、色成分Cについて、ステップS18で求めた(m×n)個の光透過率を表す液晶データDaと、ステップS14で求めた(i×j)個のLED出力値を表すLEDデータDbとを出力する(ステップS19)。この際、液晶データDaとLEDデータDbは、パネル駆動回路6とバックライト駆動回路4の仕様に合わせて好適な範囲の値に変換される。
 エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、R画像、G画像およびB画像に対して図5に示す処理を行うことにより、(m×n×3)個の画素の輝度を含む入力画像Dvに基づき、(m×n×3)個の透過率を表す液晶データDaと、(i×j×3)個のLED出力値を表すLEDデータDbとを求める。
 図6は、m=1920、n=1080、i=32、j=16、s=10、t=5の場合について、液晶データとLEDデータが得られるまでの経過を示す図である。図6に示すように、(1920×1080)個の画素の輝度を含む色成分Cの入力画像に対してサブサンプリング処理を行うことにより、(320×160)個の画素の輝度を含む縮小画像が得られる。縮小画像は、(32×16)個のエリア(エリアサイズは(10×10)画素)に分割される。各エリアについて画素の輝度の最大値Maと平均値Meを求めることにより、(32×16)個の最大値を含む最大値データと、(32×16)個の平均値を含む平均値データが得られる。そして、最大値データに基づいて、あるいは、平均値データに基づいて、あるいは、最大値データと平均値データとの加重平均に基づいて、(32×16)個のLED輝度(LED出力値)を表す色成分CのLEDデータが得られる。
 色成分CのLEDデータに輝度拡散フィルタ17を適用することにより、(160×80)個の表示輝度を含む第1のバックライト輝度データが得られる。そしてこの第1のバックライト輝度データに対して線形補間処理を行うことにより、(1920×1080)個の表示輝度を含む第2のバックライト輝度データが得られる。最後に、入力画像に含まれる画素の輝度を第2のバックライト輝度データに含まれる表示輝度で割ることにより、(1920×1080)個の光透過率を含む色成分Cの液晶データが得られる。
 なお、図5では、説明を容易にするために、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、各色成分の画像に対する処理を順に行うこととしたが、各色成分の画像に対する処理を時分割で行ってもよい。また、図5では、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5は、ノイズ除去のために入力画像に対してサブサンプリング処理を行い、縮小画像に基づきエリアアクティブ駆動を行うこととしたが、元の入力画像に基づきエリアアクティブ駆動を行ってもよい。次に、上記ステップS18におけるLCDデータ算出部18の温度補償動作について、図7を参照して説明する。
<1.4 LCDデータ算出部の詳細な構成および温度補償動作>
 図7は、LCDデータ算出部18の詳細な構成を示すブロック図である。この図7に示されるように、LCDデータ算出部18は、前述したように温度補償前のLCDデータDa’を算出する基本データ算出部180と、画像のシーンチェンジを検出するシーンチェンジ検出部181と、液晶パネルの温度に対応する好適なテーブルを温度補償用LUT19から取得して適用するLUT選択適用部182とを備える。
 基本データ算出部180は、入力画像Dvと、表示輝度算出部16で求められた各エリアの表示輝度Db’とに基づいて、温度補償前のLCDデータDa’を求める。この詳しい求め方については前述したとおりである。
 シーンチェンジ検出部181は、入力画像Dvに基づき、フレーム毎にシーンチェンジが発生したか否かを判定し、発生したと判定した場合にはLUT選択適用部182に対してシーンチェンジ検出信号を与える。上記シーンチェンジが発生したと判定される場合は、典型的には動画像に含まれる映像のシーンが切り替わる場合であり、動画像における画像の内容が大きく変化する場合など、或るフレームとその次のフレームとの画像内容が大きく変化する全ての場合を含む。このシーンチェンジは、具体的には例えば或るフレームにおける入力画像全体の平均輝度や色合いまたは画像パターンなどが次のフレームにおいて所定の閾値よりも大きく変化した場合(以下「画像の変化量が所定の閾値よりも大きい場合」という)に発生したと判定される。
 なお、このようなシーンチェンジの発生は、LCDデータDa’に基づいても同様に判定することができる。また、上記のような判定方法に加えて、またはこの判定方法に代えて、テレビジョン装置における入力画像Dvを供給すべき映像チャンネルや表示画像の表示態様を示す映像モードなどの切り替えをテレビセット部などにおいて検出し、その検出結果を示す信号がシーンチェンジ検出部181によって受け取られる場合に、シーンチェンジが発生したと判定する構成であってもよい。例えば、映像チャンネルを切り替えると画像のパターンが大きく変化するシーンチェンジが発生し、また映像モードを標準モードから映画モードに切り替えると画像の輝度や色合いが大きく変化するシーンチェンジが発生する。よってこれらの切り替えを検出することによりシーンチェンジを簡単に検出することができる。さらに、その他の周知のシーンチェンジの検出手法を採用することができる。
 LUT選択適用部182は、シーンチェンジ検出部181からシーンチェンジ検出信号を受け取る毎に、または所定の時間経過後若しくは所定の大きさ以上の温度変化が生じた後であってシーンチェンジ検出信号を受け取ったときに、温度センサ8から温度測定信号Tpを取得し、当該温度測定信号Tpにより示される液晶パネル7の温度に対応するテーブルを、温度補償用LUT19に含まれる複数のテーブルから取得する。すなわち、温度補償用LUT19は、予め定められる(通常とり得る)液晶パネル7の複数の温度範囲に対応する複数のテーブルを含んでいる。このテーブルは、典型的には理想γ曲線が温度によりどのように変化するかを測定した結果に基づき作成される。
 図8は、液晶パネルの階調と輝度との対応関係を複数の温度において示す図である。図8において、横軸は液晶データに対応する255段階の階調値であり、縦軸は最大輝度を1として規格化した輝度値である。また実線は理想γ曲線(γ=2.2)を表し、点線は液晶パネルの温度が46℃である時のγ曲線を表し、一点鎖線は55℃である時のγ曲線を表し、二点鎖線は59℃である時のγ曲線を表している。
 この図8を参照すればわかるように、液晶パネルの温度が高くなるほど、当該γ曲線は理想γ曲線から大きく乖離し、また各温度でのγ曲線における輝度は、0階調から210階調近傍までは理想γ曲線の輝度よりも大体において大きくなり、210階調近傍から255階調までは理想γ曲線の輝度よりも大体において小さくなる。なお、このように各温度毎におけるγ曲線は理想γ曲線から均等に(同じ階調分だけ)ずれるわけではないので、エリアアクティブ駆動において各エリアにおけるLEDの発光輝度が異なる場合、表示画像にはエリア毎の輝度ムラとして現れることになる。この輝度ムラはハロー現象とも呼ばれる。
 この図8のように、各温度でのγ曲線が予め(実験やシミュレーションなどにより)判明しているとき、或る階調に対応する各温度における輝度が、理想γ曲線における輝度からそれぞれどれだけずれているかがわかるので、階調値を示すLCDデータ値に対して、所定の係数を乗算しまたは所定のオフセット値を加算または減算することにより、容易に温度補償を行うことができる。
 そこで、通常とり得る液晶パネル7の温度を複数の範囲に分割し、分割された複数の温度範囲毎に、各階調毎の補正のための上記係数またはオフセット値(以下これらを「補正値」と呼ぶ)を上記結果に基づき算出し、それぞれ対応テーブルの形で温度補償用LUT19として(EPROMなどの所定の記憶装置に)記憶する。なお、このテーブルは、必ずしも全ての階調に対応する補正値を含む必要はなく、複数の代表値のみを含み、その間の値を(所定の直線または曲線で)補間する構成であってもよい。また、テーブルに代えて、所定の算出式を使用することにより補正値が算出されてもよい。この算出式は様々な態様が考えられるが、例えば各階調に対して所定の温度係数を乗算することにより補正を行う簡易な構成であってもよい。この構成ではテーブルを使用する構成よりも温度補償の正確性が小さくなる反面、大きなテーブルを記憶する必要がないので、記憶装置の記憶容量を節約することができる。
 ここで、LUT選択適用部182は、前述したようにシーンチェンジ検出信号を受け取った時点で上記テーブルを切り替える動作を行う。それは、変更された補正値が適用されると表示画像の輝度が変化するので、表示画像の変化量が所定の閾値よりも大きいシーンチェンジ時にこれを行うことにより、利用者に表示異常として視認されないようにするためである。したがって、上記シーンチェンジ時点に代えて、またはこれとともに表示画像の輝度が全てゼロである時点や極めて小さい(暗い)時点など、利用者に表示異常が視認されないような所定の時点で上記切り替え動作を行ってもよい。すなわち、シーンチェンジ検出部181は、上記テーブルを切り替える際に生じる画像の輝度変化が利用者により視認されないまたは視認されにくい時点を検出するタイミング検出手段として機能すれば足りる。そうすれば、利用者は、補正値が変更されることにより輝度変化が生じる場合にも違和感を感じることなく画像を見ることができる。
 LUT選択適用部182は、以上のように切り替えられたテーブルを次の切り替え時点まで変更することなく参照し、基本データ算出部180から受け取った温度補償前のLCDデータDa’に対して対応する補正値を適用することにより補正し、温度補償されたLCDデータDaを出力する。
<2. 効果>
 以上のように、本実施形態のLCDデータ算出部18は、温度補償用LUT19を参照することにより、温度センサ8から得られる液晶パネル7の温度に応じた補正値を取得し、この補正値に基づき温度補償されたLCDデータDaを出力するので、温度変化により液晶の透過率が変化しても、理想的なγ特性に合わせて入力画像データが補正される。したがって、本液晶表示装置は、エリアアクティブ駆動を行うときに温度変化があっても(ハロー現象などの)輝度ムラのない正しい(理想的な)階調表示を行うことができる。
<3. 変形例>
 上記実施形態では、液晶パネル7に対して温度センサ8が1つだけ取り付けられる構成であるが、特に近年の大型液晶パネルでは画面中央部と周辺部とでの温度差が大きくなるので、複数の温度センサ8が適宜取り付けられ、これらの温度の平均値などが使用されてもよい。
 また、複数の温度センサ8が取り付けられる場合、取り付けられた場所毎に温度補償が行われてもよい。すなわち、LUT選択適用部182は、複数の温度センサ8から取得される対応する液晶パネル7の各領域(以下「分割表示領域」という)の温度に対応するテーブルを、温度補償用LUT19に含まれる複数のテーブルからそれぞれ取得する。LUT選択適用部182は、基本データ算出部180から受け取った温度補償前のLCDデータDa’に対して、対応する補正値を上記各分割表示領域毎に、すなわち各分割表示領域に含まれる画素データ毎にそれぞれ適用することにより補正し、温度補償されたLCDデータDaを出力する。このようにすれば所定の分割表示領域毎に細かく温度補償を行うことができるので、大型の液晶パネル7など各所の温度が大きく異なる場合にも、正確な温度補償を行うことができる。したがって、本液晶表示装置は、エリアアクティブ駆動を行うときに温度変化があっても輝度ムラのない正しい階調表示をより正確に行うことができる。
 なお、上記各分割表示領域は液晶パネル7の温度変化特性に応じて適宜に定められるが、この分割表示領域の数は温度センサ8の数と一致している必要はない。例えば、温度センサ8が取り付けられていない分割表示領域がある場合、近傍の1つまたは複数の温度センサ8により測定された温度に基づき、上記分割表示領域の温度を推定してもよい。このように、各分割表示領域の温度検出は、温度センサ8の測定結果に基づき推定されるものであってもよい。
 さらに、上記実施形態における温度センサ8は、液晶パネル7に対して取り付けられる構成であるが、液晶パネル7近傍の雰囲気温度を計測できる離れた位置に取り付けられてもよい。また、液晶表示装置の他の基板温度やテレビセット部の(メイン)基板温度などを測定するための温度センサを流用してもよい。さらにまた、温度センサ8に代えて、液晶パネル7に流れる単位時間あたりの電流量に基づくなど、液晶パネル7の温度を推定(検出)する周知の構成を適用することができる。
 上記実施形態では、液晶パネル7に対する温度補償のみを行う構成であるが、バックライト3に対する温度補償を併せて行う構成であってもよい。すなわちバックライト3の光源であるLEDは、液晶パネル7とは異なる温度特性(温度変化に対するLEDの発光輝度変化の特性)を有しているので、LEDユニット32の1つ以上またはバックライト3の筐体やその近傍に温度センサが取り付けられ、エリアアクティブ駆動処理部5のLED出力値算出部15において、バックライト用の温度補償用LUTが備えられる構成であってもよい。この構成では、前述したLUT選択適用部182と同様に、バックライト用の温度補償用LUTから適宜のテーブルを選択して補正値を適用することにより温度補償を行うことが好ましい。なお、バックライトの温度補償に使用される温度は、液晶パネル7の温度補償の場合と同様、適宜に位置に取り付けられた温度センサの温度に基づき、当該位置からの距離やシートなどの構成、外気温や基板温度などのその他の温度などを参照することにより、バックライトの温度を推定する構成であってもよい。したがって、上記温度センサと温度センサ8とは同一のものであってもよい。
 また、LCDデータ算出部18は、液晶パネル7に対する温度補償を行うとともに、さらにバックライト3に対する温度補償を行う構成であってもよい。すなわち、上記実施形態ではLCDデータ算出部18は、求められた液晶データに対して温度センサ8からの温度測定信号Tpに対応する温度補償用LUT19に含まれる適宜のテーブルを参照して温度補償を行うことにより液晶データDaを求めるが、さらにこの求められた液晶データDaに対して、前述したようなバックライト3の筐体やその近傍等に取り付けられた温度センサからの温度測定信号に対応するバックライト用の温度補償用LUTに含まれる適宜のテーブルを参照して、バックライトのための温度補償を併せて行う構成であってもよい。さらに、上記バックライト用のLUTと温度補償用LUT19とを1つのLUTにまとめ、当該1つのLUTを参照することにより上記2種類の温度に対応する1つの補正値を求める構成であってもよい。
 上記実施形態では、LUT選択適用部182は、タイミング検出手段としてのシーンチェンジ検出部181を含むが、このようなタイミング検出を行うことなく、連続的にまたは所定の時間間隔で若しくは所定の大きさの温度変化が生じた時点でテーブルを切り替える動作を行ってもよい。この場合には、上記テーブルを切り替える際に生じる画像の輝度変化が利用者により視認される場合もあり得るが、エリアアクティブ駆動を行うときに温度変化があっても輝度ムラのない正しい階調表示を行うことができる。
 本発明は、例えば液晶パネルを背面から照明するバックライトを備える画像表示装置に適用されるものであって、バックライトの輝度を制御する機能(バックライト調光機能)を有する画像表示装置に適している。

Claims (7)

  1.  バックライトの輝度を制御する機能を有する画像表示装置であって、
     複数の表示素子を含む表示パネルと、
     前記表示パネルの温度を検出する温度検出手段と、
     複数の光源を含むバックライトと、
     入力画像を複数のエリアに分割し、前記入力画像に基づき各エリアに対応した光源の発光時の輝度を示す発光輝度データを求める発光輝度算出部と、
     前記入力画像と前記発光輝度算出部により求められた前記発光輝度データとに基づき、前記表示素子の光透過率を制御するための表示用データを求める表示用データ算出部と、
     前記温度検出手段により検出される温度に基づき、温度変化による前記光透過率の変化を補償するための補正値を算出し、算出された補正値に基づき前記表示用データを補正する温度補償手段と、
     前記温度補償手段により補正された表示用データに基づき、前記表示パネルに対して前記表示素子の光透過率を制御する信号を出力するパネル駆動回路と、
     前記発光輝度データに基づき、前記バックライトに対して前記光源の輝度を制御する信号を出力するバックライト駆動回路と
    を備えることを特徴とする、画像表示装置。
  2.  前記温度補償手段は、前記表示用データを補正することにより生じるべき輝度変化が視認されないまたは視認されにくい時点を検出するタイミング検出手段を含み、当該タイミング検出手段により検出された時点で、前記補正値を算出することを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の画像表示装置。
  3.  前記タイミング検出手段は、前記入力画像の変化量が所定の閾値よりも大きいシーンチェンジ時点を検出することを特徴とする、請求項2に記載の画像表示装置。
  4.  前記タイミング検出手段は、前記シーンチェンジ時点として、前記入力画像を与えるべき映像チャンネルの切り替え時点、または前記表示パネルにおける表示態様を示す映像表示モードの切り替え時点の少なくとも一方を検出することを特徴とする、請求項3に記載の画像表示装置。
  5.  前記温度検出手段は、前記表示パネルの表示領域を複数の分割表示領域に分け、各分割表示領域毎の温度を検出し、
     前記温度補償手段は、前記温度検出手段により検出される前記各分割表示領域毎の温度に基づき、前記各分割表示領域毎の温度変化による前記光透過率の変化を補償するための補正値を算出し、前記各分割表示領域毎に算出された補正値に基づき前記表示用データを補正することを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の画像表示装置。
  6.  前記バックライトの温度を検出するバックライト温度検出手段と、
     前記バックライト温度検出手段により検出される温度に基づき、温度変化による前記光源の輝度変化を補償するための補正値を算出し、算出された補正値に基づき前記発光輝度データを補正するバックライト温度補償手段とをさらに備え、
     前記バックライト駆動回路は、前記バックライト温度補償手段により補正された発光輝度データに基づき、前記バックライトに対して前記光源の輝度を制御する信号を出力することを特徴とする、請求項1に記載の画像表示装置。
  7.  バックライトの輝度を制御する機能を有し、複数の表示素子を含む表示パネルと、複数の光源を含むバックライトとを備える画像表示装置の制御方法であって、
     前記表示パネルの温度を検出する温度検出ステップと、
     入力画像を複数のエリアに分割し、前記入力画像に基づき各エリアに対応した光源の発光時の輝度を示す発光輝度データを求める発光輝度算出ステップと、
     前記入力画像と前記発光輝度算出ステップにおいて求められた前記発光輝度データとに基づき、前記表示素子の光透過率を制御するための表示用データを求める表示用データ算出ステップと、
     前記温度検出ステップにおいて検出される温度に基づき、温度変化による前記光透過率の変化を補償するための補正値を算出し、算出された補正値に基づき前記表示用データを補正する温度補償ステップと、
     前記温度補償ステップにおいて補正された表示用データに基づき、前記表示パネルに対して前記表示素子の光透過率を制御するパネル駆動ステップと、
     前記発光輝度データに基づき、前記バックライトに対して前記光源の輝度を制御するバックライト駆動ステップと
    を備えることを特徴とする、画像表示装置の制御方法。
