Description

POSITION ADJUSTMENT DEVICE FOR SLATS, SLATTED FRAME COMPRISING SUCH DEVICE AND BED COMPRISING SUCH SLATTED FRAME.
Field of the Invention
The present invention concerns a device for adjusting the position of fixation of slats in view of the concerned slatted frame, for example in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the slatted frame (vertical adjustment) .
Background of the Invention
With an increasing focus on knowledge economy, restricted spare time and high focus on quality, the need for good rest and sleeping comfort becomes utterly important.
It is known that sleeping comfort can be increased by providing beds with a slatted frame having slats that can be adjusted in a vertical direction on an individual basis. Such slatted frames allow personalizing the bed to an individual's preference, body shape and preferred lying position, with an increased comfort as result.
The German patent documents Nos DE 90.03.848Ul and DE 199.31.953 describe position adjustment devices for individual slats of a slatted frame. The adjustment devices comprising:
(a) a base element allowing fixation thereof to the frame; (b) a mounting member designed to support the slats and movable in view of the base element in the adjustment direction; (c) a fixation element for moving and fixing the mounting member in the adjusting direction in view of the base frame. In DE 90.03.848Ul the fixation element comprises a screw that abuts the mounting member, whereas in DE 199.31.953 the fixation element comprises two notches provided on the mounting member. The notches are designed to co-operate with different slots provided in the basic element to fix the mounting element in view of the basic member.
An inconvenience of the known position adjustment devices is that the positioning elements are difficult to handle, especially when the size of the frame in the adjustment direction is large in view of the height adjustment scope of the devices. Indeed, the positioning member can move with its handling portion (the head of the screw in DE '848 or notch
handles in DE '953) next to the frame, where access and freedom of handling to the handling portion of the devices is restricted.
Difficult handling of the positioning members very likely results in poor adjustment and hence non-optimal positioning of the concerned slats resulting in a non-reliable personalization of the slatted base to an individual's preference .
It is clear from the above that there remains a need for a technical solution allowing easy and reliable adjustment of the individual slats of a slatted frame.
The present invention meets this demand by providing a new position adjustment device that is easily accessible and allows fast and good adjustment of an individual slat or group of slats of a slatted frame. Summary of the Invention
The present invention concerns a position adjustment device for mounting a slat or group of slats to a frame, the device comprising:
(a) a base member;
(b) a mounting member provided on the base member and movable in view of said base member in and adjustment direction; (c) a fixation element for fixing the mounting member in view of the base member in different positions, characterized in that the fixation element is mounted in a fixed position relative to the base member in at least the adjustment direction.
Preferably, base member and the mounting member comprise a guide allowing moving the mounting member in view of the base member in the adjustment direction.
The base member further preferably comprises means for fixing the base member to a frame.
According to a preferred embodiment, the base member and fixation element are fixed to each other by means of a slot and cooperating protrusion preventing movement of the fixation element in view of the base member in the adjustment direction .
The mounting member is preferably provided with several support surfaces whereon the fixation element can engage to fix the mounting member in view of the base member in a desired position. Further preferred features of the position adjustment device according to the present invention are described in the appended dependent claims.
The present invention also relates to a slatted frame and/or bed comprising at least one position adjustment device according to the present invention.

Description of preferred Embodiments In the preferred embodiments represented in the accompanying drawings, the position adjustment device according to the present invention comprises: (a) a base member 1; (b) a mounting member 2; and (c) a fixation element 3a, 3b.
comprises a base member 1 manufactured in a relatively hard plastic (for example Polyamide-6 or POM) . The base member 1 comprises of a plate having an essentially rectangular shape, with at a backside of said plate, two pens 7, 8 designed to be fixed - by gluing and/or clamping - in holes 33 provided in a frame 9 of a slatted frame.
As represented in figure 3, the front side of the plate is provided with a first protrusion 10 having a convex sidewall at its arbitrarily defined lower side, and an upper concave sidewall having a central half-cylindrical extension 11.
Next to the above-mentioned first protrusion 10, a second protrusion 12 extends from the plate. Both protrusions 10 and 12 extend to a same height in view of the plane of the plate of the base member 1.
The base element further defines a guide way 34, 35, defined by two upstanding edges provided at opposite sides of the plate and extending in a same sense as the protrusions 10 and 12, the free end of said edges being provided with a rim extending parallel to the plane of the plate and at a distance thereof.
Figures 2a and 5a represent a first embodiment of the fixation element 3a, which is essentially manufactured in an elastic plastic material such as for example a thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPE-E) . In the preferred embodiment, the fixation element 2a, 5a comprises two legs 17, 18 joined by a flexible joint 13, and wherein said legs 17 and 18 each comprise a convex surface 15, 16 defining a notch A, B. At the free end of the legs 17 and 18 is provided a laterally extending handle 19, 20.
Figures 2b and 5b represent a second embodiment of the fixation element 3b, that differs from the above described first embodiment 3a in that the free end of said legs 19 and
20 are connected by means of a bridge element comprising three segments 21, 22 and 23. The segments are mutually connected by hinges and the outer segments 21 and 23 are hinge ably connected to the legs 19 and 20, such that the bridge element can be moved between a position wherein the central segment 22 is positioned between the legs 19 and 20, thereby preventing the legs to be moved towards each other, and a position wherein the central segment 22 is positioned such that the legs 19 and 20 of the fixation element can be pressed towards each other.
As represented in figures 8 and 10, the fixation element 3a, 3b is provided on the base element 1 such that the convex surfaces 15, 16 of the legs 19, 20 are contacting the concave surface of the first protrusion 10 with the handles 19, 20 extending over an outer edge of the plate of the base member 1 as represent. The joint 13 of the fixation element is hereby positioned between the first and second protrusions 10, 12 of the base member 1.
Figures 1 and 4 represent the mounting member 2 comprising a plastic plate manufactured in for example POM, with a shoulder portion 38 at two opposing edges such as to allow sliding of the mounting member 2 in the guide 35 on the base plate 1. In the present embodiment, the mounting member 2 further comprises two pens 27, 28 extending perpendicularly on a first (front) surface of the mounting member 2, while in the opposite (back surface) a central channel 24 is provided, the edges whereof are dented. Each dentations 32 defines a support surface 4, 5 for the notch A, B of the fixation element 3a, 3b. The width 6 of the channel corresponds to or is slightly smaller than the width of the fixation element, i.e. distance between the notches A and B of the fixation element 2 in a relaxed condition.
In the represented embodiment, the edges of the channel 24 extend at one end of the edges into an abutment zone, wherein the distance 6 between said edges is reduced to a level considerably smaller than the width of the fixation element 3a, 3b
In an assembled state as schematically represented in figures 7 to 10, the mounting member 2 is provided with its shoulder portions 38 in the guide of the guide 34, 35 in an orientation such that the channel 24 faces the base member 1 and such that the abutment zone defined by said channel 24 is positioned at an opposite edge than the second protrusion 10 on the base plate. The fixation element 3a or 3b is positioned between the base element 1 and the mounting element 2, with the notches A, B engaging a dentation 32 of the channel.
In this, relaxed, position of the fixation element 3a, 3b, the mounting member is locked in a fixed position in relation to the base member 1 as the support surfaces of the channel in the mounting member abut the notches of the fixation element thereby preventing movement of the mounting member in the axial direction of the channel which is defined as the adjustment direction. Clearly, by virtue of its position between the protrusions 10 and 12 of the base member, the fixation element cannot be displaced in the adjustment direction .
When pressing the legs of fixation element together, the distance between the notches is reduced and the engagement of the notches A and B in the dentations is released thereby allowing movement of the mounting element in the adjustment direction. By releasing the pressure on the on the legs, the notches will reengage with the dentations at in a desired position of the mounting member in view of the base member and as such prevent further movement of the mounting member in an adjustment direction in relation to the base member. Note that in the appended drawings the channel edges are provided with six dentations 32 each, allowing the mounting member to be positioned in six different discrete positions in relation to the base member 1.
It will be appreciated that the position of the fixation element 3a, 3b in the adjustment direction, does not depend on the position of the mounting element and is therefore always accessible at the same place in view of the base member and in extension thereof in view of the frame of a slatted mattress support .
In order to prevent accidental actuation of the handle or accidental pressure on the legs towards each other, the segmented bridge element can be positioned with its central segment 22 between the legs, thereby preventing that the notches can be released from their engagement with the dentations .
The above described position adjustment device is designed for use in bedding products and especially for adjusting the height of individual slats or groups of slats in relation to the frame of a slatted mattress support. Therefore and as represented in figures 7 to 10, the base member comprises means (pens 7 and 8, screws or other fixation devices well known to a person skilled in the art) to fix the base member 1 on a mattress support frame, while the mounting member is provided with pens 27, 28 for providing a slat support 29 thereon .
In the preferred embodiment, the slat holder comprises a spring portion 36 and in this case, two slots 37 for supporting the end portion of a slat. It is clear that the slots can be provided directly on the mounting member 2, without spring function, or that other intermediate auxiliaries can be applied and connected to the mounting member 2 for supporting the slats of a mattress support.
The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiments described above and represented in the accompanying figures; on the contrary, such a position adjustment device can be made in various executions while remaining within the scope of the invention.
