Description

METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A DECORATIVE MOULDING AND A DECORATIVE MOULDING
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a decorative moulding as defined in the preamble of claim 1 and a decorative moulding as defined in the preamble of claim 8.
Base board or skirting is often fixed to the joining point of the floor and the wall, and correspondingly cornice mouldings are often fixed to the joining point of the wall and the ceiling, while architraves are fixed to the edge of doors and windows. One purpose, among others, of these skirtings, mouldings and architraves is to cover joining point that possibly looks untidy. In the following, these skirtings, mouldings and architraves are jointly referred to with the term decorative moulding. The fixing of these decorative mouldings is time-consuming work and often also fairly laborious. Especially in stone, houses the fixing of decorative mouldings to hard stone surfaces is extremely laborious and awkward, and also as a consequence of this time-consuming and, that being the case, also expensive. Another problem is the special fasteners of specific types that are exactly applicable to the various fixing bases needed for the mouldings, which special fasteners are expensive and may also require special tools.
Decorative mouldings or e.g. plastic channels covering electrical wires are fixed to their bases also with glue or with a corresponding glue-like fixing agent. A drawback with these solutions is, however, that the layer of glue must be extremely thin so that a gap visible to the eye is not left between the fixing base and the moulding, which collects e.g. dust and is not aesthetically ..pleasing, to the eye. Correspondingly, a thin adhesive tape is not necessarily sufficiently durable because it does not have adequate gripping strength. The purpose of this invention is to eliminate the aforementioned drawbacks and to achieve a method for manufacturing a decorative moulding as well as a decorative moulding that is inexpensive in its costs and simple, that is quickly and easily fixed to different bases, and that stays in its position well. The method according to the invention is characterized by what is disclosed in the characterization part of claim 1 and the decorative moulding according to the invention is characterized by what is disclosed in the characterization part of claim 8. Other embodiments of the invention are characterized by what is disclosed in the other claims.
In the following the method and the decorative moulding according to the invention are referred to jointly as the solution according to the invention. One advantage of the solution according to the invention is that the manufacturing method is easy and also fast, and that the decorative moulding manufactured according to the invention is easy and quick to fix to different bases. From this follows the advantage of the inexpensiveness of the installation work, since less time is consumed than before. Another advantage is that neither special tools nor special fasteners are needed in fixing the decorative moulding. Owing to its ease of fixing, the decorative moulding according to the invention is especially inexpensive in the construction of stone houses. Another advantage derived from glue streaks being sunk into grooves is that the rear surface of the decorative moulding is brought very close to the wall and despite this the thickness of the glue streak enables good gripping strength, in which case no visible gap is left between the decorative moulding and the fixing base and the decorative moulding remains well attached to its fixing base. Yet a further advantage is that the grooves of the glue streak that open towards the center part of the moulding, said grooves being on the- rear surface of the moulding, enable the glue not to extrude over the edges of the moulding when fixing the moulding, but instead to be squeezed along the inclined surfaces of the grooves towards the center part of the rear wall of the moulding. Therefore glue stains, which would otherwise have to be removed after fixing, do not remain visible in connection with fixing a moulding.
In the following, the invention will be described in more detail by the aid of two examples of its embodiment with reference to the attached drawings, wherein
Fig. 1 presents one decorative moulding according to the invention without adhesive glue and viewed from the end of the moulding,

4 as a finished product and viewed from the end, and
Fig. 6 presents a decorative moulding according to Fig.
4 ready for fixing and viewed from the end,
The decorative moulding 1 presented in Figs. 1-3 is e.g. made of wooden profile, which comprises a front surface 2 that remains visible in connection with decoration, a rear surface 3 at essentially the distance from the front surface 2 by the thickness of the moulding, as well as a first end surface 4 and a second end surface 5 connecting the front surface and the rear surface, which second end surface 5 is also intended to remain visible in connection with decoration. The rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 comprises two grooves 6 that are essentially parallel to each other and at the same time essentially in the longitudinal direction of the decorative moulding 1, which grooves open to the rear side of the decorative moulding 1. The grooves 6 are situated on a different side of the center part of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 to each other.
The grooves 6 are essentially similar to each other in their cross-section but of different directions to each other such that both the grooves 6 comprise a first side surface 9 inclining upwards from the base of the groove 6 towards the center part of the rear surface of the decorative moulding 1, owing to which inclination the grooves 6 open towards the center part of the rear surface of the decorative moulding 1. In addition, the grooves 6 comprise an essentially level and straight base 10, which is essentially in the direction of the plane of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1, and also a second side surface 11, which is on the side of the end surface 4, 5 and e.g. essentially at a right angle with respect to the base 10 of the groove and to the plane of the rear surface 3. In addition, the profile of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 and the positioning of the grooves on the rear surface are such that the edge of both grooves 6 that is on the side of the center part of the rear surface 3 is farther from the plane of the rear surface 3 than the edge of the grooves that is on the side of the end surface 4, 5. Therefore when the groove 6 fills with glue, the groove 6 sort of leaks glue towards the center part of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1, and the glue does not easily penetrate past the end edges 4, 5 of the moulding to become visible.
The grooves 6 are essentially the same length as the decorative moulding 1 and are disposed at a distance from the end surfaces 4, 5 and from each other such that the distance of the grooves 6 from each other is essentially greater than the distance of the -grooves from the end surfaces 4, 5. In this case the grooves 6 are essentially close to the end surfaces 4 and 5 of the decorative moulding 1 such that the first groove 6 is close to the first end surface 4 and the second groove 6 is close to the second end surface 5, which is the end surface that remains visible in the fixed decorative moulding.
Fig. 2 presents one decorative moulding 1 according to the invention as a finished product. In this case both grooves 6 of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 contain a sticker-like glue streak 7 that is preferably but not necessarily comprised of pressure-sensitive adhesive, of a suitable cross-sectional shape that essentially fills the grooves, e.g. essentially rectangular, and which is essentially as long as the decorative moulding 1. The glue streaks 7 are sunk into the grooves 6 partially such that essentially one-half of their cross-section is in the groove
6 and correspondingly one-half of the cross-section is outside the groove 6, 6 pointing backwards from the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1.
In addition, the size of the cross-section of the glue streaks 7 is selected to be such that the glue streaks 7 could be disposed on top of the base 10 of the grooves 6 such that the glue streaks 7 cover the base 10 of the groove 6 either partially or fully, but do not cover the inclined first side surface 9. The thickness of the glue streaks 7 is selected to be such that sufficient gripping strength is achieved with the glue streaks, but at the same time so that when the decorative moulding 1 is fixed to its base the gap between the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding and the fixing base, e.g. the wall, is essentially small at least on the side of the second end surface 5 that remains visible. This matter is aided also by the fact that when pressing the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 against the wall the glue streaks 7 compress into their grooves 6 and owing to the inclined first side surface 9 the glue streak 7 points when it is pressed towards the center part of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 into the space 12 remaining between the first side surface 9 of the groove 6 and the wall.
In addition, the smallness of the gap between the decorative moulding 1 and the wall is influenced by the fact that the glue streak 7 disposed in the groove 6 on the side of the end surface 5 that remains visible is slightly smaller in its cross-section than the glue streak 7 disposed in the groove 6 on the side of the end surface 4.
The glue streaks 7 are also covered with backing paper 8 or with a corresponding protection that protects the glue streaks 7, the surface of which backing paper on the side of the glue streaks 7 is coated with silicone or with some other suitable slippery substance, to which the adhesive glue does not properly grip and owing to which the backing paper 8 detaches easily from the glue streaks 7 when pulled.
Fig. 3 presents a decorative moulding 1 according to the invention ready for fixing into position. In this case the decorative moulding 1 is cut to length and the backing paper 8 is detached from the top of the glue streaks 7. The decorative moulding 1 is fixed into its position e.g. on the wall simply by pressing the decorative moulding 1 by its rear surface 3 onto its fixing point, in which case the glue streaks 7 are pressed between the fixing base and the decorative moulding 1 as well as into the spaces 12 formed as a result of the inclined side surfaces 9 of the grooves 6 such that as small a gap as possible remains between the decorative moulding and the fixing base. Other fixing means are not needed.
Figs. 4-6 present a decorative moulding according to a second embodiment of the invention. Also this decorative moulding 1 is preferably made of wooden profile, which comprises a front surface 2 that remains visible, a rear surface 3 at a distance from the front surface 2 of essentially the thickness of the moulding, as well as a first end surface 4 and a second end surface 5 connecting the front surface and the back surface, which second end surface 5 remains visible. The rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 comprises two grooves 6a that are essentially parallel to each other and at the same time essentially in the longitudinal direction of the decorative moulding 1, which grooves are essentially almost semicircular in their cross-section such that the grooves 6a open to the rear side of the decorative moulding 1. The grooves 6a are essentially similar to each other in their cross-section and of essentially the same length as the decorative moulding 1 and are disposed at a distance from the end surfaces 4, 5 and from each other such that the distance of the grooves 6a from each other is essentially greater than the distance of the grooves from the end surfaces 4, 5. In this case the grooves 6a are essentially close to the end surfaces 4 and 5 of the decorative moulding 1 such that the first groove 6a is close to the first end surface 4 and the second groove 6a is close to the second end surface 5. Preferably the grooves 6a are situated on a different side of the center part of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 to each other.
In the solution according to Figs. 4-6, the profile of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 and the positioning of the grooves on the rear surface are also such that the edge of both grooves 6a on the side of the center part of the rear surface 3 is farther from the plane of the rear surface 3 than the edge of the grooves on the side of the end surfaces 4, 5. Therefore when the groove 6a fills with glue 7a, the groove 6a sort of leaks glue towards the center part of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1, and the glue 7a does not easily penetrate past the end edges 4, 5 of the moulding to become visible.
Fig. 5 presents one decorative moulding 1 according to a second embodiment of the invention, as a finished product. In this case both grooves 6a of the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1 contain a sticker-like glue streak 7a that essentially fills the grooves, is essentially round in its cross-section, is composed- of e.g. pressure-sensitive adhesive, and which is essentially as long as the decorative moulding 1. The glue streaks 7a are sunk into the grooves 6a partially such that essentially approx. one-half, of their cross-section is in the groove 6a and correspondingly approx. one-half of the cross-section is outside the groove 6a pointing backwards from the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1. The thickness of the glue streaks 7a is selected to be such that sufficient gripping strength is achieved with the glue streaks, but at the same time so that when the decorative moulding 1 is fixed to its base the gap between the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding and the fixing base is essentially small at least on the side of the second end surface 5.
The glue streaks 7a are also covered with backing paper 8 or with a suitable protection that protects the glue streaks
7a, the surface of which backing paper on the side of the glue streaks 7a is coated with silicone or with some other suitable slippery substance, to which the adhesive glue does not properly grip and owing to which the backing paper 8 detaches easily from the glue streaks 7a when pulled.
Fig. 6 presents a decorative moulding 1 according to the invention ready for fixing into position. In this case the decorative moulding 1 is cut to length and the backing paper 8 is detached from the top of the glue streaks 7a. The decorative moulding 1 is fixed into its position e.g. on the wall simply by pressing the decorative moulding 1 by its rear surface 3 onto its fixing point, in which case the glue streaks 7a are pressed between the fixing base and the decorative moulding 1 such that as small a gap as possible remains between the decorative moulding and the fixing base. Other fixing means are not needed.
With the method according to the invention a decorative moulding is manufactured e.g. as follows: the cross- sectional profile of the decorative moulding 1 is formed e.g. by planing, in connection with which planing a suitable number, at least one, but suitably two grooves 6, 6a intended for e.g. two glue streaks 7, 7a are planed into the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1. The grooves 6, 6a are formed such that in the finished decorative moulding 1 they are at a distance from each other and from the end surfaces 4 and 5 of the moulding, and also are essentially parallel to each other. In addition, the grooves 6, 6a are formed in essentially the longitudinal direction of the decorative moulding 1 and also for the whole length of the decorative moulding. The grooves 6 are made to be essentially similar to each other in their cross-sections. They are made so as to be either a mirror-image grooves 6 or similar grooves 6a. At least one inclined side surface 9 is made in the mirror-image grooves 6, which side surface inclines upwards from the base of the groove 6 towards the center part of the rear surface of the decorative moulding 1. Instead of a straight-line pitch of the inclination, the side surface 9 can also rise in a curve towards the center part of the rear surface of the decorative moulding 1.
After the forming of the grooves 6, 6a, hot-melt adhesive or a hot glue suited to the purpose is pressed into the grooves 6, 6a as an glue streak such that a part, suitably approx. one-half, of the cross-section of the glue streak 7, 7a extends outside the groove 6, 6a pointing outwards from the rear surface 3 of the decorative moulding 1. After the pressing of the glue streaks 7, 7a, the glue streaks 7, 7a are covered with protective backing paper 8 or with a corresponding protection that protects the glue streaks 7, 7a, the surface of which backing paper on the side of the glue streaks 7, 7a is coated with silicone or with some other suitable slippery substance.
It is obvious to the person skilled in the art that the invention is not limited solely to the embodiments described above, but that it may be varied within the scope of the claims presented below. Thus, for example, the number and the position of the glue streaks can be different to what is presented above. There can also be e.g. one, three, four or more glue streaks instead of two, and the structure can also be such_ that essentially the whole rear surface is provided with a layer of glue.
It is additionally obvious to the person skilled in the art that there can be more than one glue streak in one groove, e.g. there can be two, three, four or even more glue streaks in one groove.
It is further obvious to the person skilled in the art that the cross-section of the grooves of the rear surface of the decorative moulding can be other than what is described above. The cross-sectional shape can be e.g. V-shaped, rectangular, another sized segment of a circle than a semicircular segment, et cetera.
It is further obvious to a skilled person that the profile and dimension, as well as the intended use, of the decorative moulding may differ from what is described above. The profile can be e.g. L-shaped or some other suitable profiled shape and the glue streaks can in this case be e.g. on only one face of the profile. It is also obvious to the person skilled in the art that the composition of the sticker-type adhesive used can be varied. What is essential is that the glue streaks stay in their position well on the rear surface of the decorative moulding, stay in shape when free, and do not creep or stain.
