Abstract

A luminous touch sensor includes a light guide (21) having a major surface and at least one light emitting diode (25) optically coupled to the edge of the light guide. The light emitting diode emits light into the light guide, which redirects the light through or away from the major surface. A capacitive or piezoresistive touch sensing element (23) is in contact with the major surface. In other embodiments of the invention, the light guide is a dielectric layer in a capacitive touch sensor.
