Description
Description
The present invention relates to a wireless communication device, its use, and a communication system comprising the device and an accessory device in accordance with independent claims 1, 11, and 17.
The preferred type of the present invention is a communication device comprising a first wireless communication means for communicating with a communication network, like GSM; a second wireless communication means, like Bluetooth®, for communicating with an accessory device; and a housing having a receptacle portion to accommodate or attach said accessory device, and for charging a battery of the accessory device. More specifically, the communication device relates to a mobile phone etc. which can communicate with accessory devices via a wireless connection, and which can also recharge a battery of the accessory device.
Wireless communication devices are nowadays widely known and used in the market. Users use these mobile phones for private and business purposes with accessory devices to increase their functionality and usability.
There is an increasing demand for accessories to be used with the phones, most prominently a "headset" or hands-free set, a device which has incorporated a speaker and a microphone, and allows the use of the phone without actually holding it to the ear, by instead attaching the headset to the head of the person using the phone.
Other devices which are increasingly used in connection with mobile phones are GPS navigation devices, which transfer a momentary position (mostly given in WGS84 coordinates) to the phone, in order to allow a software provided on the phone displaying to the user his/her position on a map, or by a numerical information, or by directional information, provided, a target site is set.
All these accessory devices need some kind of power supply. This power is usually provided by a rechargeable battery within the accessory device, which can be recharged by some kind of external recharger connectable to the accessory. The user needs to recharge the accessory on a routine basis to keep it working. However, there is not always an opportunity to plug the recharger into the wall or car power outlets. The user may also simply have forgotten to take the recharger with him, or has forgotten to recharge the accessory before use. Accordingly, there is a certain risk that the accessory is not charged when needed. There is also a certain tendency that the user will only keep an eye on the charging status of his or her mobile phone, which is usually considered the most important device for communication.
In any way, present day accessory devices have a higher risk of not being charged when needed, thus rendering the accessory useless .
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide an approach for assuring or at least improving the chances of an accessory device being charged when needed.
The above object is solved by the invention throughout the features of independent claims 1, 11 and 17. Further features and advantages of the invention are characterised and claimed in the dependent claims.
The basic concept of the invention resides in getting rid of a recharging device for the accessory. This is achieved by using the communication device itself as a recharging device for an accessory device.
The communication device according to the invention comprises a first wireless communication means for communicating with a communication network; a second wireless communication means for communicating with an accessory device; and a housing having a receptacle portion. The receptacle portion is adapted to receive, accommodate or attach said accessory device, and further comprises electrical terminals for charging a battery of the accessory device, when being connected with the communication device.
Thereby, it is possible to firmly connect the accessory device with the communication device, to carry it together with the communication device, and at the same time, have it recharged by the communication device. No additional charger for the
accessory device is hence needed, since it receives the required energy to be stored in its battery from the communication device instead.
Both wireless communication device and accessory device must be specifically adapted for mechanical and electrical compatibility .
Preferably, the communication device is a handheld device.
In accordance with a particular preferred embodiment of the invention, the device is a mobile telephone.
Communication device and accessory device are intended to communicate which each other, at least when being disconnected, though in particular embodiments, they may also communicate while still being connected. Several wireless communication technologies exist on the market, and more will be devised in the future. All those technologies may be suitable for logically connecting the communication device with the accessory device. In a preferred embodiment, the second communication means is a "Bluetooth" transceiver as defined by the Bluetooth Special Interest Group.
The mechanical connection of the communication device with the accessory device may be accomplished by any connector means known in the art. In a preferred embodiment, the receptacle portion is a slot for inserting said accessory device at least partially. A slot, as used in the present invention, is an opening in the housing of the communication device, which has some kind of guiding rail etc. for guiding the accessory device upon being inserted in the slot, into a particular,
predefined position where it is mechanically mounted and electrically connected to the terminals. In a slot, most of the accessory device will be embedded into the housing, and hence be invisible.
The receptacle portion may also comprise a magnetic coupling for attaching said accessory device. In this embodiment, the accessory device can be mounted externally, by using pairs of magnets etc. This kind of connection is better suited for applications where no high mechanical shearing forces between the communication device and the accessory device are to be expected.
According to the invention, the receptacle portion may also be a groove for receiving said accessory device. A groove differs from a slot in that a larger portion of the accessory device will still be visible when the accessory is inserted in the groove. This embodiment may be suitable when a display on the accessory should still be visible, or when the accessory needs some kind of reception capability from the environment even when accommodated in the receptacle portion, e.g. for receiving GPS signals etc.
The terminals for electrically connecting the accessory device with the battery of the communication device can take any suitable shape devised by the skilled person, like pads or pins, holes, springs etc.
In order to assure a correct recharging, the receptacle portion may preferably be configured such that the accessory device can be housed or attached only in one orientation in or
at the receptacle portion, allowing the correct connection of the terminals with terminals on the accessory device.
The invention is also directed to a communication system, which comprises a communication device according to the invention, as detailed above, and an accessory device adapted for communication via the second communication means.
The accessory device may well be switched on all the time, or may contain a manual switch for activating and deactivating it. Preferably, however, the accessory device comprises a means for activating the accessory device upon removal from the communication device. In this manner, the accessory device will only consume energy when in use (if it is always used outside the receptacle portion) .
The accessory device may be any device providing an additional functionality for the communication device through a wireless communication link.
According to the invention, the accessory device may be a hands-free set. This set can comprise a portion containing a speaker, and a portion containing an earplug or headphone speaker. Additional operational elements may include a "Ready" LED and an ON/OFF switch.
Preferably, the accessory device may also be a navigation receiver, like e.g. a satellite navigation receiver (GPS, Galileo etc.) or other navigation device (Loran C, etc.).
The accessory device may also be an incoming call notification device. Such a device can be detached from the mobile phone
and placed at an appropriate site, generating a visual or audio signal upon the arrival of a call, an SMS, an e-mail etc.
The accessory device may also be an active antenna, wherein the second communication means is identical (i.e. is one and the same) to the first communication means. Such an active antenna may be used to boost the received signal in cases of compromised reception. For example, the active antenna may be attached to the outside of a car window and replicate the received signal into the interior of the car.
It goes without saying that the accessory device may comprise more than one functionality, either of the above-mentioned ones, or further functionalities.
Finally, the invention is also directed to the use of a wireless communication device for recharging an accessory device for the communication device, which can communicate with said communication device. All that was said in respect to the communication device and system does likewise hold for the use of the device as well.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention is a mobile telephone comprising a GSM module and a Bluetooth module, and a receptacle portion for accommodating e.g. a headset. Such preferred embodiment is further described in accordance with the attached drawings, wherein
Fig. 1 is a highly schematic depiction of the functional components of a communication device according to an embodiment of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a front and side view of a communication device with an inserted accessory device; and
Fig. 3 shows an accessory device.
Fig. 1 shows a communication system in accordance with the present invention, comprising a wireless communication device 1 and an accessory device 2 attached thereto. The communication device comprises a first communication means 3, e.g. a GSM module for a mobile telephone functionality, having an internal or external antenna 5; and a second communication means 4, e.g. a Bluetooth module, with a further antenna 6 for communicating with accessory devices.
Both communication means are connected to a battery means 7 of the device via connecting lines 8. The battery means 7, which may include a controller circuitry, has terminals 9 for recharging at a base station or a recharger. A further pair of terminals 10 allows recharging the accessory device via counter terminals in said accessory device 2. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, magnets 11, 12 hold the accessory device in its intended position, though other means of physical attachment will in most embodiments of the invention be used.
Fig. 2 shows a communication device 1 according to another embodiment of the invention, with a groove or indentation 13 into which an accessory device 2 is inserted or pushed in. On the right side of Fig. 2, the accessory device 2 is shown partially inserted. The front side Ia of the communication device may have a keyboard and a display for operating the
device. The backside Ib contains the indentation 13. The accessory device 2 and the indentation 13 have mating surfaces, which allow a smooth insertion and appearance of the two devices. They may be formed in a way which gives a good hold of the accessory device when inserted into the indentation 13. Terminals 10 are visible in this partial insertion state of the accessory device 2.
Fig. 3 shows an example of an accessory device 2 usable in the present invention.
