Abstract

Disclosed is a method for producing a cellulose aerogel by using a solvent which is advantageous with respect to handling easiness and/or cost, particularly a specific solvent other than NMMO. Also disclosed is a cellulose aerogel having a larger specific surface area as measured by nitrogen adsorption. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing a cellulose aerogel, which comprises the steps of: A) dissolving cellulose in an aqueous solution containing 2 to 20 wt% of caustic alkali and 4 to 20 wt% of urea or thiourea so that the concentration of cellulose becomes 0.2 to 20% by weight, thereby preparing a cellulose solution; B) immersing the cellulose solution in a non-solvent for cellulose, thereby preparing a liquid-containing cellulose gel; and C) subjecting the liquid-containing cellulose gel to x) organic solvent substitution drying, y) supercritical drying or z) subcritical drying, thereby producing the cellulose aerogel, wherein the cellulose aerogel produced has a specific surface area of 300 m2/g or greater as measured by a nitrogen adsorption BET method.
