Abstract

A light wood panel being at the same time light and resistant and having a fine aspect. The panel comprises a core layer composed of at least a flexible wavy flute wooden veneering. It also comprises two external wooden layers which are glued to the same core layer. The core layer can consist of one or more wooden flexible veneerings glued to a sheet of paper or another flexible bearing material. The external layers are advantageously constituted of ordinary thin wooden veneering arranged alternately relative to the grain structure. Flexible wooden veneerings or fine sawnwood can also be used. The core layer of the panel can be made of a single flexible wavy flute wooden veneering or multiple veneerings which are joined together by one or more flat, thin wooden veneerings on which they are glued. In the latter case, the wooden flexible wavy veneerings have their flutes oriented at 90° with respect to each other.

Description

WOOD PANEL LIGHT

Introduction

The present invention relates to a wood panel both light and strong.

TECHNICAL BACKGROUND

In the field of construction, furniture or other applications where it is necessary to have a material with a certain thickness, a certain load resistance and a clear appearance, it is usual practice to use panels of wood or derivatives or by-products of wood.

The panels are thus used, are currently made of solid wood, assembled flat wood veneers (plywood), byproducts timber (chipboard and MDF) or of wood wafers (waferboard).

The problem with existing panels is that they are relatively heavy, especially when they need to have good strength.

Summary of the Invention

The present invention aims to meet an existing need, namely to provide a panel that is both light, strong and beautiful appearance, and is therefore suitable for various uses mentioned above.

The structure of multi-layer wood panel is both lightweight and strong according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises: a central layer hereinafter called "core", which is made of at least one veneer flexible corrugated flutes; and two outer layers made of wood, which are glued to said same core layer. The core layer or "core" may be composed of one or more flexible wood veneer bonded to even a paper or other flexible substrate material sheet. The outer layers are preferably made of ordinary thin wood veneers placed alternately grain structure. Alternatively, one may use wood veneer flexible thin sawn timber, particle board, MDF or other wood panels or reconstituted fibers.

The core of the panel may consist of a single flexible veneer corrugated flutes or more veneers which are interconnected by one or more flat thin wood veneers to which they are bonded, are obtained in this way panels thicker and stronger. In the latter case, the flexible wood veneer corrugated advantageously have their flutes oriented at 90 ° to each other.

Brief Description of Drawings The invention will be better understood from reading the non-limiting following description thereof, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a multi-layered wood panel according to a first embodiment of the invention;

Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of a plating flexible timber useable to form the core layer of the panel illustrated in Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a sectional view of an alternative flexible veneer used for forming the core layer of the panel illustrated in Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a perspective view similar to that illustrated in Figure 1, further showing a rod consisting of a solid wooden part which is intended to provide a finish to the edge of the panel; Figure 5 is a side view of the end of a panel, wherein the end of the outer layer is folded to form final thereto; and

Figure 6 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1 but showing an alternative embodiment wherein the panel comprises a central layer consisting of several flexible wood veneers whose flutes are oriented at 90 ° relative to each other.

Detailed Description of the Invention

As previously mentioned, the present invention relates to a panel that is both light, strong and beautiful appearance, and is intended to meet the above mentioned uses.

This panel is similar to plywood panels, if not that or the inner layers of it, hereinafter called "core layers" or "souls" are actually replaced by one or more wood veneers flexible organized flutes, single or stacked.

The manufacture of flexible thin veneers wood has been known since the 1970s These veneers, however, have hitherto been used for decorative applications. In the context of the present invention, the same thin flexible wood veneer organized flutes is intended to give a solid structure to the multi-layer wood panels according to the invention, while reducing substantially its weight.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a panel (1) of wood multilayer according to the invention. This panel comprises two outer layers (3, 3 ') made of wood, preferably of regular thin wood veneers placed alternately grain structure, or flexible timber veneers or thin wooden timber. The panel (1) also comprises a core layer or "soul" (2) which consists of a flexible wood veneer organized flutes. The structure of this flexible timber is illustrated in more detail in Figure 2. It is preferably an assembly of plies, including two outer plies (4, 5) which are preferably made of a thin wood veneer whose thickness may vary between 1/36 inch to 1/125 inch. These two outer plies can be bonded directly to one another. Alternatively, the assembly may comprise an internal fold (6) which is made of a flexible carrier material, such as Kraft paper of 1/200 inch, or any other encollable material. These three layers are assembled in a press by gluing. Of course, the pressure and press temperature depends on the adhesive used.

The assembly is then treated in one called "flexor" device or "Veneer Tenderizer" which makes the assembly flexible in a direction parallel to the wood grain. This device has the property of re-open the cracked produced during the manufacture of thin veneer without breaking the fiber structure of this thin veneer.

Figure 3 shows a variant of the core layer (2) of the panel according to the invention. This variant includes a thin veneer of wood (7) applied on a sheet (8) of Kraft paper or other, plating, and the sheet being assembled together to press and Flexe as before.

The two outer layers (3, 3 ') may also consist of flexible veneer laid flat in a direction contrary to the wood grain of the inner ply. The panel assembly is assembled by gluing in a press.

As previously mentioned, the two outer layers may consist of other materials such as thin wood veneer panels of thin wood sawn timber, particle board, MDF or other rigid materials. Wood species used for the manufacture of veneers, and the type of glue and type of paper, can of course vary according to the characteristics required under the intended uses.

The flutes structure of the core layer significantly increases resistance to stress in a direction parallel to the flutes. The juxtaposition of two or more crossed flutes structures bonded together by one or more thin wood veneers (12), increases the resistance to stress in two directions when required. An example of such an arrangement with two flutes structures illustrated in Figure 6 of the drawings.

As illustrated in Figure 4, a finishing rod consisting for example of a solid piece of wood (11) can be disposed between the outer layers (3, 3 ') of the panel in the direction of the flutes of the core layer to give adequate finish to the panel in that direction.

Despite that the same finishing method is usable in the opposite direction, a twisting of one end of one of the outer layers in a semicircle can also help to give a good finish to the panel.

This is illustrated in Figure 5 showing the end (14) of the outer layer (3 ') folded in a semicircle to 180 degrees. In such a case, the upper layer reached the bottom layer and the joint obtained is substantially invisible after finishing.

It is understood that various modifications could be made to the structural lightweight wood panel described above without departing from the scope of the present invention.

claims
1. A structure of multi-layer wood panel is both light and strong, characterized in that it comprises: a central layer hereinafter called "core", which is made of at least one corrugated flexible wood veneer flutes, and two outer layers made of wood, which are glued directly on the core layer.
2. The panel according to Claim 1, characterized in that the core is composed of two thin wood veneers bonded directly together or to a core sheet of paper or other flexible substrate material.
3. The panel according to Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that the core is composed of at least two wood veneer each flexible corrugated flutes, said veneer sheets being joined together by a flat thin wood veneer on which they are glued.
4. The panel according to Claim 3, characterized in that the corrugated flexible wood veneers have their flutes oriented at 90 ° relative to each other.
5. The panel according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterized in that it comprises at least a finishing rod which is disposed between the outer layers and extends along a rim of the core bonded between said outer layers to thereby provide a finished to the panel.
