明 細 書
照明装置およびそれを用いた液晶表示装置
技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、線状光源および反射板を備えた照明装置およびそれを用いた液晶表 示装置に関するものである。
背景技術
[0002] 近年、ブラウン管(CRT)に代わり急速に普及して 、る液晶表示装置は、省エネ型 、薄型、軽量型等の特長を備えており、それ故、液晶テレビ、モニター、携帯電話等 に幅広く利用されている。これらの特長をさらに活かす方法として液晶表示装置の背 後に配置される照明装置の改良が挙げられる。
[0003] 照明装置は、主にエッジライト型と直下型とに大別される。エッジライト型の照明装 置では、液晶パネルの背後に導光板が設けられるとともに、横端部に光源が設けら れる。光源から出射された光は導光板で反射され、間接的に液晶パネルに均一に照 射される。この構造により、エッジライト型の照明装置は、輝度は低いが薄型化、輝度 の均一化に優れ、携帯電話やノートパソコン等、中小型液晶ディスプレイに主に用い られている。
[0004] 一方、直下型の照明装置では、液晶パネルの背後に線状光源が複数並列配置さ れ、光源から出射された光は、当該液晶パネルに直接照射される。この構造により、 直下型の照明装置は、大画面でも高輝度が得やすぐ 20インチ以上の大型液晶デ イスプレイで主に採用されている。しかし、直下型の照明装置では、線状光源からの 直射光により光源近傍の輝度が特に高くなる。その結果、液晶パネルに線状光源の 像が表出し、輝度むらができるという問題点を有している。なお、この問題は、線状光 源と液晶パネルの距離を縮めるといつそう顕著になる。
[0005] この問題は、線状光源と液晶パネルとの距離を十分とることで解決することができる 力 この場合、液晶表示装置の薄型化に反するとともに輝度が低下する。したがって 、上記問題点を解決するにあたって、照明装置は、薄型の特長を保ちながら高輝度 で輝度の均一'性に優れるものでなくてはならない。 [0006] 従来、反射板の形状は平坦なものが一般的であるが、これらの問題を解決するた め、光源の背後に反射板を設けるとともに、反射板の形状を工夫することによって、 照明装置の輝度の均一性を確保する試みがなされている。
[0007] 例えば、従来の照明装置では、反射板の形状を放物面や曲面を組み合わせたも ので構成するとともに、反射光と直射光とを好適に複合することによって上記問題点 を解決しょうとしている(例えば、特許文献 1、 2、 3、 4および 6参照)。あるいは、反射 板の形状を楕円面で構成するとともに、楕円の焦点に光源を設け、 1つの光源によつ てあた力も 3つの光源があるかのような光学系を形成することによって、上記問題点を 解決しょうとしている(例えば、特許文献 5参照)。
[0008] し力しながら、上記従来の方法は、反射板の形状を工夫することにより、反射板によ つて反射された光の輝度を均一化することはできるが、反射板によって反射されるこ となく光源力 照射対象に直接照射される光の輝度を均一化することができず、その 結果、光源力 照射対象に対して照射される光全体の輝度を均一化することができ なかった。
[0009] そこで、光源から照射対象に対して照射される光全体の輝度を均一化する方法とし て、従来から、低透過率の拡散板を用いる方法、拡散シートを複数枚用いる方法、プ リズムシートを用いる方法、またはレンズシートを用いる方法が採用されて 、る。
[0010] 例えば、低透過率の拡散板を用いる方法では、光源の背面に反射板が設けられて いるとともに、光源よりも光の出射面側に低透過率の拡散板が設けられている。拡散 板は低透過率であるので、当該拡散板を透過できない光が多く存在する。そして、当 該拡散板を透過しな力つた光は、反射板によって反射'リサイクルされ、その結果、輝 度の均一性が向上する。
[0011] また、拡散シートを複数枚用いる方法では、光源の背面に反射板が設けられている とともに、光源よりも光の出射面側に複数枚の拡散シートが設けられている。拡散シ ートは複数枚設けられているので、当該拡散シートを透過できない光が多く存在する 。そして、当該拡散シートを透過しな力つた光は、反射板によって反射'リサイクルさ れ、その結果、輝度の均一性が向上する。
[0012] また、プリズムシートを用いる方法では、光源の背面に反射板が設けられているとと もに、光源よりも光の出射面側に、例えば図 8 (a)に示すような横断面形状を有する プリズムシート 110が設けられている。図 8 (a)に示すように、上記プリズムシート 110 では、光の入射面が平面であり、光の出射面が鋭利な凹凸を有している。なお、図 8 (b)では、光の経路を矢印 115にて示している。上記プリズムシート 110は、光の一 部を透過し、大部分の光を反射している。そして、当該プリズムシート 110を透過しな 力つた光は、反射板(図示せず)によって反射'リサイクルされ、その結果、輝度の均 一性が向上する。
また、レンズシートを用いる方法では、光源の背面に反射板が設けられているととも に、光源よりも光の出射面側に、例えば図 9 (a)に示すような横断面形状を有するレ ンズシート 111が設けられている。図 9 (a)に示すように、上記レンズシート 111では、 光の入射面が平面であり、光の出射面が曲線形状の複数の凸部を有している。なお 、図 9 (b)では、光の経路を矢印 115にて示している。上記レンズシート 111は、光の 大部分を透過し、残りの光を反射している。そして、当該レンズシート 111を透過しな 力つた光は、反射板(図示せず)によって反射'リサイクルされ、その結果、輝度の均 一性が向上する。

しかしながら、上記従来の照明装置では、低透過率の拡散板、複数枚の拡散シー ト、プリズムシート、またはレンズシートを用いることによって、照明装置における光の 利用効率が低下すると 、う問題点を有して 、る。
[0014] 例えば、低透過率の拡散板または複数枚の拡散シートを用いた場合、拡散板また は拡散シート等で光が吸収されることによって、照明装置の光の利用効率が低下す るという問題点を有している。
[0015] また、上述したように、反射板が曲面形状の場合、光源から出射して、反射板にて 反射し、光源よりも光の出射面側にある拡散板に入射する光は、反射板が平面形状 の場合と比較して、拡散板に対して略垂直な方向に入射する。拡散板に入射した光 は拡散板内で散乱するが、拡散板からの出射光は入射光と同一方向に強い指向特 性をもつ。したがって、プリズムシートやレンズシートに入射する光は、拡散板に対向 する面に略垂直な方向に対して強度の強い光となる。
[0016] このような光がプリズムシートに入射した場合、図 8 (b)に示すように、光の多くはプ リズム面にて全反射して拡散板へと再帰する。再帰した光は、拡散板や反射板によ つて再度散乱された後、出射される。その結果、出射される光は、輝度の均一性が向 上するとともに、プリズムシートの形状に応じて、正面輝度も向上する。しかしながら、 再帰光が多いため、反射板などによる光のロスが多くなり、照明装置の光の利用効率 が低下すると 、う問題点を有して 、る。
[0017] また、このような光がレンズシートに入射した場合、図 9 (b)に示すように、プリズムシ ートに入射した場合と比較して、再帰光が少ないので、照明装置の光の利用効率は 比較的低下しない。し力しながら、再帰光が少ないので、輝度の均一性が上昇しな V、とともに、正面輝度が上昇しな ヽと 、う問題点を有して 、る。
[0018] ところで、横断面形状が平坦な反射板を用いるとともに、更にプリズムシートまたは レンズシートを用いることも考え得る。しかしながら、この場合、横断面形状が曲面で ある反射板を用いる場合に比べて輝度の均一性が向上しな 、と 、う問題点を有して いる。つまり、線状光源から出射して、横断面形状が平坦な反射板にて反射し、線状 光源よりも光の出射面側にある拡散板に入射する光は、拡散板に対して斜めに入射 する光が多い。拡散板に入射した光は、拡散板内で散乱するが、拡散板からの出射 光は、入射光と同一方向に強い指向特性をもつ。したがって、プリズムシートまたはレ ンズシートに入射する光は、拡散板に対向する面に対して斜め方向に強度の強い光 となる。このような光がプリズムシートまたはレンズシートに入射した場合、プリズム面 やレンズ面にて屈折し、出射される光が多くなる。換言すれば、再帰光が少なくなる。 その結果、輝度の均一性が上昇しな 、と 、う問題点を有して 、る。
発明の開示
[0019] 本発明は、上記従来の問題点に鑑みなされたものであって、その目的は、光の利 用効率を低下させることなぐ輝度の均一性および正面輝度が向上した照明装置お よびそれを用いた液晶表示装置を提供することにある。
[0020] 本発明者は、上記課題に鑑み鋭意検討した結果、反射板の形状を工夫するタイプ の照明装置においては、用いる光学素子として、レンズシートやプリズムシート等のよ うな、単に光路を変えたり屈折させるだけの構成ではなぐより積極的に光を照射方 向へ導くための構成、すなわち導光体を用いることが有効であることを見出し、本発 明を完成させるに至った。
[0021] すなわち、本発明の照明装置は、上記課題を解決するために、線状光源および反 射板を備えており、上記反射板は上記線状光源力 の光を反射可能とする反射面を 有する照明装置において、さらに、上記線状光源および上記反射板からの光を受光 する受光面と、光の照射側に光を出射する出射面とを有する導光体を備えており、 上記反射面の少なくとも一部には、曲面状の曲面反射部が形成されるとともに、上記 導光体の出射面の一部には、平面状の平面光学部および曲面状の曲面光学部が 形成されて 、ることを特徴として 、る。
[0022] 上記構成によれば、反射板の反射面の少なくとも一部に曲面状の曲面反射部が形 成されていることによって、線状光源から出射されて、上記反射板によって反射され る光は、上記導光体の受光面および出射面に対して略垂直な方向に入射することが できる。
[0023] 上記導光体の出射面に対して略垂直に光が入射した場合、当該光は、上記曲面 光学部において導光体を透過して、照射対象に向カゝつて照射される。その結果、本 発明の照明装置の正面輝度を向上させることができる。
[0024] 一方、上記導光体の出射面に対して略垂直に光が入射した場合、当該光は、平面 光学部にて反射された後、上記曲面光学部に向力つて照射される。そして、曲面光 学部に向力つて照射された光は、当該曲面光学部において再び反射された後、反 射板に向力つて照射される。つまり、上記方向性を有する光が上記平面光学部に照 射された場合、平面光学部と曲面光学部とが協働することによって、光を反射板に向 力つて再帰させることができる。その結果、光がリサイクルされるので、輝度の均一性 を向上させることができる。
[0025] 仮に、導光体が、平面光学部のみ力 なる構成であれば、光の利用効率が低下し 、曲面光学部のみ力もなる構成であれば、輝度の均一性が低下する。一方、本願発 明の照明装置は、平面光学部と曲面光学部とを併せ持つ構成であるが故に、光の 利用効率を低下させることなぐ輝度の均一性および正面輝度を向上させることがで きる。
[0026] 本発明の照明装置では、さらに、上記線状光源から出射した光を受光して、光の照 射側に拡散照射する拡散板を備えて 、ることが好ま 、。
[0027] 上記構成によれば、線状光源から出射された光、および線状光源から出射された 後上記反射板によって反射された光は、拡散板によって拡散されるので、輝度が均 一化された光を上記導光体に照射することができる。さらに、拡散板によって拡散さ れた後で上記導光体に向力つて照射される光は、拡散板への入射光と同一方向に 強い指向特性をもつ。つまり、光を上記拡散板によって拡散した後で、当該光を上記 導光体の受光面および出射面に対して略垂直な方向に入射させることができる。そ の結果、より輝度の均一性が向上した照明装置を実現することができる。
[0028] 本発明の照明装置では、上記曲面光学部は、光の照射側に向かって突出した曲 面を有し、上記平面光学部は、上記受光面に対して傾斜していることが好ましい。
[0029] 上記構成によれば、平面光学部が、受光面に対して傾斜する状態で出射面に形 成されて!/、ることによって、上記平面光学部に照射された光を上記曲面光学部に対 して反射させることができる。また、曲面光学部が光の照射側に向力つて突出した曲 面を有することによって、光は、上記平面光学部によって反射された後、上記曲面光 学部によって再び反射され、その結果、上記反射板へと再帰することができる。そし て、このように光をリサイクルすることができるので、輝度の均一性を向上させることが できる。
[0030] また、曲面光学部が、光の照射側に向力つて曲面を突出する状態で出射面に形成 されていることによって、上記線状光源から曲面光学部に直接照射された光は、導光 体を透過して照射対象に向力つて照射することができる。その結果、本発明の照明 装置の正面輝度を向上させることができる。
[0031] 本発明の照明装置では、上記曲面光学部および平面光学部は、互いに、線状光 源の長手方向に沿って線状に隣接して形成されて 、ることが好ま U、。
[0032] 上記構成によれば、上記線状光源から照射される光の一部は導光体を透過させ、 残りの光は反射'リサイクルさせることができる。その結果、広範囲にわたって、輝度 の均一性および正面輝度が向上された光を照射することができる。
[0033] 本発明の照明装置では、上記導光体は、少なくとも透光性榭脂からなる光学シート であることが好ましい。
[0034] さらに、本発明の照明装置では、上記透光性榭脂は、ポリカーボネート、スチレンお よびアクリル系榭脂からなる群より選ばれる少なくとも一種であることが好ましい。
[0035] 上記構成によれば、上記導光体は光の透過率が高!、。その結果、上記導光体を透 過中に、光の強度が低下することを防ぐことができる。つまり、光が上記導光体を透過 中に、当該導光体によって光が吸収されることを防ぐことができる。
[0036] 本発明の照明装置では、上記線状光源は複数設けられ、かつ、互いに並列配置さ れているとともに、上記反射板の反射面には、上記線状光源のそれぞれに対応する ように上記曲面反射部が形成されて 、ることが好ま 、。
[0037] 上記構成によれば、線状光源が複数設けられて 、ること〖こよって、正面輝度を向上 させることができるとともに、広範に光を照射することができる。また、上記複数の線状 光源が並行配置されるとともに、各線状光源に対して曲面反射部が形成されている ことによって、正面輝度を向上させることができるとともに、輝度の均一性を向上させ ることがでさる。
[0038] 本発明の照明装置では、上記反射板の反射面のうち、光の照射側から見て線状光 源の背面となる位置には、当該線状光源に平行な平面となる平面反射部が形成され ていることが好ましい。 [0039] 上記構成によれば、上記反射板によって反射される光のうち、上記導光体の受光 面および出射面に対して略垂直な方向に入射する光の割合を増カロさせることができ る。

[0045] 本発明の一実施形態について図 1ないし図 7に基づいて説明すれば、以下の通り である。
[0046] まず、本願発明の液晶表示装置について説明する。本願発明の液晶表示装置は、 本願発明の照明装置をバックライトとして備えているものである。例えば、図 1に示す ように、液晶表示装置 1は、液晶パネル 3と、当該液晶パネル 3に対向して設けられる 照明装置 2とを備えている。なお、当該照明装置 2が、本願発明の照明装置であって 、直下型の照明装置の形態を有している。そして、上記照明装置 2から液晶パネル 3 に向力つて光が照射されている。
[0047] 液晶パネル 3としては特に限定されず、適宜公知の液晶パネルを用いることができ る。
[0048] 次いで、本願発明の照明装置について説明する。例えば、図 1に示すように、照明 装置 2では、複数の線状光源 4が並列に配置されており、線状光源 4の後方に反射 板 8が設けられている。上記反射板 8の後方には、さらにインバーター 5が設けられて いる。上記線状光源 4からみて光の照射側には、拡散板 6および光学シート 7 (導光 体)が設けられている。以下に、各構成について説明する。
[0049] 上述したように、上記照明装置 2は、線状光源 4を有して 、る。線状光源 4としては 特に限定されず、適宜公知の線状光源を用いればよい。また、線状光源 4の数は特 に限定されず、照明対象 (例えば、液晶パネル 3)の大きさなどに応じて、適宜選択す ることができる。なお、線状光源 4を複数用いる場合には、線状光源 4が互いに並行 に配置されることが好ましい。また、このとき各線状光源 4間の距離も特に限定されな いが、隣接する線状光源 4の距離を、同じにすることが好ましい。上記構成によれば 、照明装置 2において、複数の線状光源 4が均一に分布するので、より輝度の均一性 が高 、光を、液晶パネル 3に対して照射することができる。
[0050] 上記照明装置 2には、線状光源 4から照射される光の一部と後述する光学シート 7 によって再帰される光とを反射するために、反射板 8が備えられている。さらに詳細に は、上記線状光源 4から照射される光の一部と、後述する光学シート 7によって再帰さ れる光とが、当該反射板 8によって反射され、反射された光は、後述する拡散板 6お よび光学シート 7に向力つて面状に照射される。ここで「面状」とは、上記拡散板 6およ び光学シート 7に対して平行な面における光の強度が略同一である状態が意図され る。なお、図 1では、複数の線状光源 4に対して 1つの反射板 8が形成されているが、 反射板 8の数は 1つに限定されるものではない。例えば、 n個の線状光源 4に対して n 個の反射板 8を備える構成であってもよ 、。
[0051] また、上記反射板 8における反射面の少なくとも一部には曲面状の曲面反射部が 備えられている。なお、上述したように、複数の線状光源 4が備えられている場合には 、各線状光源 4に対応するように曲面反射部が形成されていることが好ましい。さらに 、上記線状光源 4が並列配置されている場合には、上記曲面反射部も並列配置され ていることが好ましい。上記構成によれば、各線状光源 4から出射される光を、効率よ く拡散板 6および光学シート 7に対して略垂直に反射させることができる。
[0052] 上記曲面反射部の横断面形状は、反射板 8によって反射される光の多くが、後述 する拡散板 6および光学シート 7に対して、略垂直に入射することができるような曲線 を含むものであればよぐ特に限定されるものではない。曲面反射部の形状について 、以下に具体例を示す。なお、以下に示す曲面反射部の形状は一例にすぎず、曲 面反射部の形状は、以下に示す具体例に限定されるものではない。
[0053] 図 2は、一つの光源に対して設けられている反射板の断面図である。図 2に示すよ うに、線状光源 4の背後には反射板 8が備えられているとともに、線状光源 4からみて 光の照射側には、拡散板 6が備えられている。図 2に示すように、上記反射板 8の断 面図において、曲線領域 12によって示される領域が曲面反射部に相当し、直線領 域 13によって示される領域が平面反射部に相当する領域である。上記曲線領域 12 の形状は、第 1焦点を共有する楕円形状 11aおよび楕円形状 l ibの一部であって、 上記曲線領域 12は、上記線状光源 4に対して左右対称になるように配置されている 。なお、図 2において、楕円形状 11aおよび楕円形状 l ibは、点線にて示されている 力 当該点線部は反射板 8としては実在しない領域である。また、上記直線領域 13 は、光照射側からみて線状光源 4の背面に位置し、当該直線領域 13を挟むように上 記曲線領域 12が形成されている。
[0054] 図 2において、矢印 15は、反射板 8によって反射された光の経路を示している。例 えば、線状光源 4から出射され、反射板 8の楕円上端部 8aにて反射された光は、楕 円形状 l ibの第 2焦点 10に向かって直進する。このように、横断面形状に曲線領域 12が含まれる反射板 8を用いた場合、反射された光は、上記拡散板 6に対して略垂 直に入射する光の割合が大き 、。
[0055] また、上記反射板 8の形状は、図 3に示すように、その断面形状が放物線であって もよい。なお、この場合、上記反射板 8は曲面反射部からなり、平面反射部を含まな い構成となる。この場合、当該放物線の焦点の位置に、線状光源 4が配置されている ことが好ましい。本実施の形態の照明装置では、線状光源 4から出射された光は、反 射板 8によって反射されたあと、拡散板 6に対して略垂直に入射することができる。な お、上記放物線の形状としては特に限定されるものではなぐ照射対象の大きさ等を 考慮して、適宜設定することができる。
[0056] 上述したような曲面反射部を有する反射板 8によれば、反射された光は、拡散板 6 に対して略垂直に入射することになる。そして、拡散板 6において拡散された光は、 拡散板 6から出射されたあと、当該拡散板 6に対向するように並行に配置されている 光学シート 7に対しても、主として略垂直に入射することになる。その結果、光学シー ト 7において、透過される光と反射される光とを、バランスよく選択することが可能にな る。つまり、光学シート 7によって透過される光と、反射'リサイクルされる光の割合が 適度に調節されるので、輝度の均一性および正面輝度を向上させることができる。な お、このことについては後述する。
[0057] 一方、図 4には、横断面形状が直線領域のみからなる反射板 8によって反射される 光の進行方向が示されている。なお、図 4において、反射される光の進行方向は、矢 印 15にて示されている。図 4に示すように、線状光源 4から照射された光は、平坦な 反射板 8によって反射される。このとき、反射板 8によって反射される光は、拡散板 6 に対して斜めに入射する光の割合が大きい。そして、拡散板 6において拡散された 光は、拡散板 6から出射されたあと、当該拡散板 6に対向するように並行に配置され ている光学シート 7に対しても、斜めに入射することになる。その結果、光学シート 7に おいて、透過される光の割合が、光学シート 7において反射'リサイクルされる光の割 合よりも大きくなつてしまう。つまり、光学シート 7によって反射'リサイクルされる光の割 合が小さくなりすぎるので、輝度の均一性を向上させることができない。なお、このこと についても後述する。
[0058] 本実施の形態の照明装置には、拡散板 6が備えられている。当該拡散板 6におい て、線状光源 4からの直射光および反射板 8からの反射光が拡散された後、拡散され た光は、光学シート 7に向力つて照射される。上記拡散板 6としては特に限定されず、 適宜公知の拡散板を用いることができる。例えば、上記拡散板 6として、すりガラスな どを用いることができる。
[0059] 本実施の形態の照明装置では、上記拡散板 6の光出射面側に光学シート 7 (導光 体)が備えられている。この光学シート 7は、従来のレンズシートなどのように、単に光 路の変更や照射光の屈折等を目的とする光学素子とは異なり、より積極的に光を照 射方向へ導くための導光体として機能する光学素子である。そして、上記拡散板 6か ら出射された光は、当該光学シート 7に入射される。上記光学シート 7の材料としては 特に限定されないが、透明性榭脂であることが好ましい。具体的には、光学シート 7 の材料としては、ポリカーボネート、スチレンおよびアクリル系榭脂の少なくともいずれ かであることが好ましい。更に具体的には、光学シート 7の材料として、メタタリルスチ レン(MS)、メチルメタタリレート'ブタジエン 'スチレン(MBS)またはゼォノア(登録商 標)などを用いることが可能である。上記構成によれば、光学シート 7は光の透過率が 高い。その結果、光学シート 7を透過中に、光の強度が低下することを防ぐことができ る。
[0060] 図 5 (a)に、上記光学シート 7の横断面図を示す。図 5 (a)に示すように、光学シート 7の横断面は、出射部 20と受光部 21とを含む。受光部 21は、光学シート 7の横断面 のうち、拡散板 6から光が入射される側の面に相当する。つまり、上記受光部 21は、 光学シート 7の面であって、線状光源 4および反射板 8からの光を受光する受光面に 相当する。一方、出射部 20は、光学シート 7の横断面のうち、液晶パネル 3に対して 光を出射する側の面に対応している。つまり、光学シート 7の面であって、照射対象 に向力つて光を出射する出射面に相当する。
[0061] 上記受光部 21の形状は、光学シート 7に対して光を入射し得る形状であればよぐ 特に限定されない。例えば、上記受光部 21の形状は、直線であることが好ましい。さ らに、上記受光部 21は、上述した拡散板 6の光が出射される側の面に対して並行に 設けられていることが好ましい。上記構成によれば、拡散板 6から出射された光を、光 の進行方向を変えることなく出射部 20に照射することができる。そして、その結果、上 記出射部 20において、透過される光と反射'リサイクルされる光とをバランスよく選択 することができる。
[0062] また、上記出射部 20は、直線形状の直線部 19と曲線形状の曲線部 18とからなる。
なお、上記直線部 19が平面光学部に相当し、上記曲線部 18が曲面光学部に相当 する。そして、上記曲線部 18において光が透過されるとともに、上記直線部 19と曲 線部 18とによって光が反射'リサイクルされる。
[0063] 図 5 (b)に示すように、上記直線部 19は、上記受光部 21に対して角度 a >0) にて配置されることが好ましい。更に具体的には、上記角度 αは、 45度 ± 5度である ことが好ましぐ上記角度 αは、 45度であることが、最も好ましい。このように、上記直 線部 19が上記受光部 21に対して角度 αにて配置されることによって、上記直線部 1 9によって光を効率よぐ曲線部 18に向力つて反射することができるとともに、照明装 置の輝度の向上効率を最も向上させることができる。
[0064] また、上記曲線部 18は、曲線形状を有する。そして、上記曲線部 18は、光学シート 7における光の出射側に向力つて突出するように形成されていることが好ましい。当 該曲線部 18には、主として 2種類の光が照射される。照射される光の一つは、上記 直線部 19によって反射された光であり、他方は、上記直線部 19によって反射される ことなく曲線部 18に対して照射される光である。なお、直線部 19によって反射されて 曲線部 18に入射する光の進行方向は、光学シート 7 (換言すれば、受光部 21)に対 して略水平方向であり、直線部 19によって反射されることなく曲線部 18に対して照射 される光は、光学シート 7 (換言すれば、受光部 21)に対して略垂直方向である。そし て、曲線部 18が有する曲線形状は、直線部 19によって反射された光を反射板 6に 向かって再び反射させる(再帰させる)とともに、直線部 19によって反射されることなく 曲線部 18に照射される光を透過させるものである。上記曲線形状としては、当該条 件を満たすものであればよぐ特に限定されない。
[0065] 例えば、上記曲線部 18は、直線部 19と曲線部 18とで構成される凹凸のピッチの半 分を半径とする円の円周の一部であることが好ましい。上記構成によれば、直線部 1 9によって反射された光を反射板 8に向力つて効率よく反射することができるとともに、 直線部 19によって反射されることなく曲線部 18に照射される光を効率よく透過させる ことができる。その結果、輝度の均一性および正面輝度を向上させることができる。
[0066] 一般的に、曲線部 18の曲率半径が大きければ、曲線部 18に入射する光の入射角 度は、曲線部 18中の入射位置に応じて大きく変化することはない。一方、曲線部 18 の曲率半径が小さければ、曲線部 18に入射する光の入射角度は、曲線部 18中の 入射位置に応じて大きく変化する。例えば、曲率半径を大きくするほど曲線部 18は 直線に近い形状となり、その結果、曲線部 18中のあらゆる入射位置において、同じ 角度で光が入射することになる。それ故、曲線部 18に入射した光は、全反射しやすく なる。一方、曲率半径を小さくするほど曲線部 18は円に近い形状となり、その結果、 曲線部 18中の入射位置に応じて、様々な角度で光が曲線部 18に対して入射するこ とになる。それ故、曲線部 18に入射した光は、入射位置に応じて、反射したり透過し たりすること〖こなる。
[0067] また、上記出射部 20における曲線部 18と直線部 19との面積比は特に限定されず 、適宜設定することができる。例えば、直線部 19の面積比を大きくすれば、出射部 2 0にて反射'リサイクルされる光の割合が大きくなり、その結果、輝度の均一性を向上 させることができる。一方、曲線部 18の面積比を大きくすれば、出射部 20を透過する 光の割合が大きくなり、その結果、正面輝度を向上させることができる。したがって、こ れらを考慮した上で、曲線部 18と直線部 19との面積比を適宜設定すればよ!、。
[0068] 本願発明の照明装置では、光学シート 7に対して略垂直に光が照射される。このよ うに、光学シート 7に対して略垂直に光が照射されることは、上記出射部 20において 、透過される光と反射'リサイクルされる光とを選択する上で、重要な意味を持つ。こ のことにつ 、て、図 6 (a)および図 6 (b)を用いて説明する。
[0069] 図 6 (a)では、光学シート 7に対して略垂直に光が照射されている。なお、図 6 (a)に おいて、光の経路は、矢印 15にて示されている。本実施の形態の照明装置では、曲 線部 18に直接入射した光は、当該曲線部 18において光学シート 7を透過した後、照 射対象(図示せず)に向力 て照射される。そして、主に当該光によって、正面輝度 を向上させることができる。一方、直線部 19に直接入射した光は、当該直線部 19に おいて反射した後、曲線部 18に向力つて照射される。そして、当該曲線部 18におい て再び反射された後、反射板(図示せず)に向かって再帰される。再帰された光は、 反射板によって反射された後、曲線部 18または直線部 19に対して照射されることに なる。つまり、上記経路に従って、光が反射'リサイクルされるので、輝度の均一性を 向上させることができる。そして、本願発明の照明装置では、上述したように、反射'リ サイクルされる光と、反射'リサイクルされることのない光との両方の光を照射対象に 向かって照射するので、光の使用効率を落とすことなぐ輝度の均一性および正面輝 度を同時に向上させることができる。
[0070] 一方、図 6 (b)では、光学シート 7に対して斜めに光が照射されている。なお、図 6 ( b)において、光の経路は、矢印 15にて示されている。この場合、曲線部 18および直 線部 19に直接入射した光は、当該曲線部 18および直線部 19において光学シート 7 を透過した後、照射対象(図示せず)に向カゝつて照射される。つまり、この場合、反射 'リサイクルされる光が少なくなる。その結果、正面輝度は向上するが、その反面、輝 度の均一性が低下することになる。したがって、本願発明の照明装置においては、光 学シート 7に対して照射される光は、光学シート 7に対して略垂直方向に照射されるこ とが好ましい。

実施例に用いた光学シートとしては、直線部の角度 αが 45度、曲線部が楕円(楕 円を 4等分した中の 1つ)で構成されたシートを用いた。なお、当該実施例に用いられ ている反射板は、横断面形状が曲線を含むものであった。

比較例として、横断面形状の両面が直線からなるプリズムシートと、横断面形状の 両面が曲線力もなるレンズシートを用いた。上記プリズムシートとしては、住友スリー ェム社製の BEFII (商品名)を用い、上記レンズシートとしては、住友スリーェム社製 のウェーブシート(商品名)を用いた。なお、当該比較例に用いられている反射板は、 横断面形状が曲線を含むものであった。

図 7は、上記実施例および比較例の、各縦断面位置における輝度の分布を示して いる。図 7から明らかなように、プリズムを用いた場合には輝度が高ぐレンズを用いた 場合には輝度が低いという結果であった。更に、図 7の結果に基づいて輝度の標準 偏差を求めた場合、表 1に示すように、比較例は、実施例と比べて標準偏差が高いと いう結果であった。つまり実施例は比較例と比べて輝度の均一性が高いことが明らか になった。

産業上の利用の可能性
[0081] 本発明の照明装置およびそれを用いた液晶表示装置は、以上のように、反射面の 少なくとも一部には曲面状の曲面反射部が形成されている反射板を備えるとともに、 線状光源および反射板からの光を受光する受光面と照射側に光を出射する出射面 とを有する導光体を備えているものである。さらに、上記出射面の一部には、平面状 の平面光学部および曲面状の曲面光学部が形成されている。 [0082] それ故、上記導光体では、光の一部を透過させるとともに、残りの光をリサイクルす ることができるので、光の利用効率を低下させることなぐ輝度の均一性および正面 輝度を向上させることができるという効果を奏する。
[0083] 以上のように本発明では、反射面の少なくとも一部には曲面状の曲面反射部が形 成されている反射板を備えるとともに、線状光源および反射板からの光を受光する受 光面と照射側に光を出射する出射面とを有する導光体を備えているものである。さら に、上記出射面の一部には、平面状の平面光学部および曲面状の曲面光学部が形 成されている。それ故、上記導光体は、光の一部を透過させるとともに、残りの光をリ サイクルすることができる。そのため、本発明は各種照明装置やその部品を製造する 分野に利用することができるだけでなぐ液晶表示装置に代表される各種表示装置 やその部品を製造する分野に広く利用することができる。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 線状光源および反射板を備えており、上記反射板は上記線状光源からの光を反射 可能とする反射面を有する照明装置において、
さらに、上記線状光源および上記反射板からの光を受光する受光面と、光の照射 側に光を出射する出射面とを有する導光体を備えており、
上記反射面の少なくとも一部には、曲面状の曲面反射部が形成されるとともに、 上記導光体の出射面の一部には、平面状の平面光学部および曲面状の曲面光学 部が形成されていることを特徴とする照明装置。
[2] さらに、上記線状光源から出射した光を受光して、光の照射側に拡散照射する拡 散板を備えて 、ることを特徴とする請求項 1に記載の照明装置。
[3] 上記曲面光学部は、光の照射側に向力つて突出した曲面を有し、
上記平面光学部は、上記受光面に対して傾斜していることを特徴とする請求項 1ま たは 2に記載の照明装置。
[4] 上記曲面光学部および平面光学部は、互いに、線状光源の長手方向に沿って線 状に隣接して形成されていることを特徴とする請求項 3に記載の照明装置。
[5] 上記導光体は、少なくとも透光性榭脂からなる光学シートであることを特徴とする請 求項 1〜4のいずれか 1項に記載の照明装置。
[6] 上記透光性榭脂は、ポリカーボネート、スチレンおよびアクリル系榭脂からなる群よ り選ばれる少なくとも一種であることを特徴とする請求項 5に記載の照明装置。
[7] 上記線状光源は複数設けられ、かつ、互いに並列配置されているとともに、
上記反射板の反射面には、上記線状光源のそれぞれに対応するように上記曲面 反射部が形成されていることを特徴とする請求項 1〜6のいずれか 1項に記載の照明 装置。
[8] 上記反射板の反射面のうち、光の照射側から見て線状光源の背面となる位置には 、当該線状光源に平行な平面となる平面反射部が形成されていることを特徴とする 請求項 7に記載の照明装置。
[9] 請求項 1〜8のいずれか 1項に記載の照明装置をバックライトとして備えていることを 特徴とする液晶表示装置。
