Abstract

A system, method, and computer program product for using thin metallic films as an MO material suitable for propagating visible radiation. The system includes an apparatus having a substrate transparent to a radiation signal having a wavelength in a visible frequency range; a regularly perforated metallic layer having a plurality of apertures, each aperture having a diameter not greater than about the wavelength divided by four, the apertures arranged into a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns of a regular matrix providing centers of the apertures disposed about the wavelength apart along the rows and the columns; and a magnetic field generating structure disposed over the metallic layer. The method includes a) propagating a radiation signal through a substrate, the radiation signal including a radiation component at a wavelength in a visible frequency range; b) imposing the radiation signal on a regularly perforated metallic layer having a plurality of apertures, each aperture having a diameter not greater than about the wavelength divided by four, the apertures arranged into a plurality of rows and a plurality of columns of a regular matrix providing centers of the apertures disposed about the wavelength apart along the rows and the columns to pass the radiation component; and c) influencing the radiation component using a magnetic field generally parallel to a propagation direction of the radiation component to variably change a polarization angle responsive to the magnetic field.
