Abstract
The invention relates to a telecommunication and data communication system and more particular to a system which includes means which makes it possible to utilize geographical positioning of units of equipment which can co-operate with said system to control and communicate different types of services included in said system. In the invention is included a device and method which makes it possible to geographically find out the position of to said system connected equipment when the communication between the calling and the called one is made by utilization of IP-based equipment.
Description
AUTOMATIC POSITIONING OF EQUIPMENT CONNECTED TO A TELECOMMUNICATION AND DATA COMMUNICATION SYSTEM
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a tele- and data communication system, and more particular a system which includes means which makes it possible to utilize geographical positioning of, in the first place, handheld terminals to control and communicate different types of services included in said system.
TECHNICAL BACKGROUND
It is previously known to use different positioning technologies to find out the geographical position of a mobile terminal. Positioning specifications which then can be utilized for different types of subscriptions where the position of the mobile terminal is of considerable importance.
Such an example is the TeliaSonera service Friendfinder which implies that the user can get information about where a wanted person is to be found, actually the position of the mobile terminal, provided that the wanted terminal has an established connection with the system.
The today known position-based systems, however, are not particularly well adapted to the cases when the system is using IP-connected units of equipment in the system.
TECHNICAL PROBLEM
At call to emergency number, a telecommunication and data communication system need information about the geographical position of the calling terminal to make it possible for the system to route the call to the in the system most suitable emergency service centre, with regard to e.g. geographical nearness to e.g. the scene of the accident, and to make it possible to inform the by the system selected emergency service centre about from where the call is emanating.
One problem at the utilization of so called IP-telephony is that the IP-address does not include information about the geographical origin of the call in the same way as at utilization of fixed telephony or the positioning at the utilization of mobile telephony. In
the today known systems the calling person himself/herself has to specify his/her geographical position to make the in the system accessible position-based services function as intended.
This can result in considerable risks, for instance that the terminal owner at the installation has neglected to configure the geographical position of the terminal, or has configured a wrong position specification. Conditions which may result in disastrous consequences at e.g. call to an emergency number.
The present invention intends to solve above mentioned problems.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
One aim of the present invention is to provide a tele- and data communication system which makes it possible to use geographical positioning of units of equipment which can co-operate with said system to control and communicate different types of positioning services included in said system, also in the cases when the system is using IP-based technology solutions.
The invention can be realized on a plurality of communication platforms included in a tele- and data communication system, but in the preferred embodiment is described how this is made by utilization of IMS.
The fixed equipment in e.g. the home and/or the office (CPE) can consist of a terminal intended for IP-telephony, or of IP-connected equipment of other kind, for instance a so called Residential Gateway (RGW) which in its turn is arranged with one or more terminals intended for IP-telephony which is permanently or wirelessly connected to said equipment.
The invention is defined in patent claim 1 , whereas advantageous embodiments are specified in the sub claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The invention will be described in more details in the following with reference to enclosed drawing, at which Figure 1 is an overall view over a telecommunication and data communication system according to the invention.
DESCRIPTION OF PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
In this description the following customary abbreviations are used:
AS Application Server PS Positioning Server
RGW Residential Gateway
HLR Home Location Register
IMS IP Multimedia subsystem
IP Internet Protocol IR Infrared Radiation
WLAN Wireless Local Area Network
HSS Home Subscriber Server
CPE Customer Premises Equipment
PLMN Public Land Mobile Network
The invention is based on that CPE can communicate with mobile terminals located in, for instance, the home and/or the office, over, for instance, a WLAN, Bluetooth, IR or via galvanically connected via a docking station which can co-operate with said mobile terminal.
Both CPE and mobile terminals are registered in IMS's database, which in the case of IMS consists of HSS and, at more advanced positioning, also of a positioning server. HSS is the database which, in addition to HLR-information, also holds other subscriber information. When a mobile terminal gets into contact with CPE, it informs the subscriber database via the IP-connection that this has been made. This can result in that the traffic to the mobile terminal is controlled via the IP-network and CPE, instead of over the mobile network. This, however, is no requirement for the present invention. The subscriber database already has access to the position of the mobile terminal, which has been acquired in known way, but when used positioning method so allows, the positioning function in the mobile terminal can be activated in known way via the mobile network to obtain such a current position as possible. Because CPE is registered in the same subscriber database, the position data of the mobile terminal also can be associated with CPE.
The units of equipment which are connected to CPE and are registered in the subscriber database then share this position. The position of CPE can be propagated
down to CPE, and be acquired via inquiry from CPE, or be kept only in the subscriber database.
When the position is stored only in the subscriber database, the position information is added by IMS at outgoing call. In other case also CPE can add this information. The latter case also makes it possible that the telecommunication and data communication services which do no utilize IMS will have access to position information.
The invention can be implemented by suitable combinations of software and hardware, and the above described embodiment does only constitute an example. The scope of protection of the invention is only limited by the following patent claims.
