Description

Device for adjusting the seat for a chair
This invention relates to a device for adjusting the seat of a chair, where the seat is equipped with adjustable connecting supporting elements in the form of fluid- filled adjustment elements.
A chair comprising device of this type is known from the Danish patent application DK 0690/89 A. This known chair comprises both seat and the back part with these in-built supporting elements for a chair with for seating person and with the elements supportive function is adjustable.
A chair seat with a seat cushion which is adjustable by means of device of this mentioned type is further known from US 6 398 303. This device comprises liquid- filled adjustment elements which mutually influence each other to cause an opposite adjustment movement in the vertical direction in order to obtain a tilting movement of the hip of a person sitting on the seat.
The object of the invention is to provide a device by means of which a power neutral adjustment or free adjustment of this seat is obtained of a chair when a person is sitting on a chair changes the seat position.
According to the invention this object is achieved by device of the initially mentioned type characterised by the adjustment elements are provided between a plate formed seat support and comprise at least two cushions located on the opposite surface part of this seat support, the air cushions are connected in pairs by means of a channel equipped with valve for control regulation of the air transfer between the cushions.
A preferred embodiment of the device according to this invention is characterised in that the seat part is tiltable about a transversal axes in appearing supported by the seat support and by the air cushions comprising first and second air cushion situated on each side of the transversal axes.
This invention will be described further in connection with two embodiments with reference to the drawings, where
Fig. IA- 1C show schematically side views of a chair having a first embodiment of a device according to the invention in three different functional positions,
Fig. 2 schematically shows a view of the device in fig. 1,
Fig. 3 shows a side view of a chair equipped with another embodiment of a device according to this invention, and
Fig. 4 shows a view of the device in fig. 3.
In the drawings, similar or corresponding parts of the chair have been denoted the same reference symbol. In the side views in fig. IA a chair 1 is shown in the form of an office chair or a working chair of conventionally type comprising a chassis 2 with casters with a central hub part 3 and a height adjustable chair column 4 extending from the hub part and supporting a support plate or seat support 5. Further the chair comprises a seat part 6 which can be tilted about a transversal rocking shaft 7 in appearing supported by the seat support 5. The chair comprises also a not shown back part connected to the seat part or the seat support in a conventional way.
The chair is equipped with a device according to the invention for adjusting the seat of the seat part 6 for obtaining an adjustment or changing of the seat when a person sitting on the chair changes the position. The device comprise adjustment elements provided between the seat support 5 and the seat part 6 and which in the shown embodiment comprises two cushions 8 and 9 situated on opposite forward and rate sides of the seat support 5 on each side of the transversal shaft 7. The air cushions 8, 9 are connected to each other by means of channel or conduit 10, for example a hose equipped with a valve 11 for controlled regulation of air transfer between the cushions.
Even if there in the present description and in the claims are referred to "air cushions", it would be appreciated that the cushions can contain any suitable gas instead of air.
From the basic view in fig. 2, the air cushions have a longitudinal form and extend between the side borders of the seat support 5 in parallel with the transversal shaft 7.
As it further will appear from fig. 2, the valve 11 is equipped with an operating device 12 designed in such a way that the valve easily can be opened and closed by persons sitting on the chair.
When a person sitting on the chair tilts the seat part 6 backwards or forward about the shaft 7 as shown in fig. IB and 1C, air will move from one cushion to the other via the hose 10 and the valve 11 until a balance is achieved. The valve adjusts the flow rate of the air between the cushions. The resulting position of the seat part will be stationary and will be maintained without use of force until the person changes the position and new balance is achieved. Thus a natural seat angle adjustment is achieved according to the body position and particularly according to the thigh bone(s) of the user of the chair. When the valve 11 is closed the seat position will be locked.
The air cushions 8, 9 are made of a non-elastic material in order to achieve the power neutral with the adjustment.
Fig. 3 and 4 schematically show another embodiment of the device according to the invention.
In this embodiment the device comprises two sets of air cushions, i.e. a first and another pair of air cushions 15, 16; 17, 18 respectively, where the cushions in the two pairs are located in pairs on the opposite surface part of the seat support 5. Thus, one pair 15, 16 of cushions is positioned forward and backward on the seat support while the other pair 17, 18 is positioned at the side borders of the seat support. Thus, cushions in each pair are connected by means of a respective hose 19 and 20 each equipped with an adjustment valve 21, 22 respectively.
The seat part 6 is here not rotatably or tiltable about a transversal axes, but is connected to the underlying seat support or supporting plate 5 by means of a connection that allows for limited tilting movement of the seat part 6 in relation to the seat support 5. This connection consists of an element 23 connected to or fastened centrally to the seat support and the seat part respectively. The element 23 can for example be made of a ball joint. In other embodiments the element can for example consist of a suitable length of a non-elastic strap, via or rope.
By means of the connection 23, the air cushions supported seat part 6 can be tilted forwards or backwards or sideways in any angular position in the same way as a cardanic-supported gyro. This will occur in a power neutral way due to the leveling of the air between the cushions. The desired position will be locked by closing the valves 21 and 22, if desired.
In the same way as in the first embodiment, each of the valves 21 and 22 are equipped by one operation device 24, 25, respectively, as shown in fig. 4 so that the valves easily can be opened and closed by a person sitting on the chair.
