Abstract

A sound device (10) comprising: - output means (11), such as a loudspeaker, for generating an output sound signal; a memory unit (12) containing a set of informative sound signals; a receiver (13) for receiving a contextual parameter; and control means (14), such as a controller or a processor, for extracting an informative sound signal from the set as a function of a value the contextual parameter received by the receiver, and for delivering said informative sound signal to the output means.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates generally to a sound device comprising output means for generating a sound signal and a memory unit containing a set of predetermined sound signals.
The invention finds application, for example, in alarm clocks or mobile phones.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In people's day life often certain types of information play a role. Typical examples of such information are wake up time, weather information, traffic information and the news in general. Usually these different types of information need to be retrieved specifically, e.g. via television news, radio news, teletext or the newspaper.
It is also known to represent such information in abstract ways by using light. For example, Ambient Orb slowly transitions between thousands of colors to show changes in the weather, the health of your stock portfolio, or if your boss or kid is on instant messenger (see httpJ/www.ambientdevices.com/cat/orb/orborder.html). Data is updated continuously via a wireless network.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sound device which provides a sense of information of events external to the sound device. As matter of fact, it would be preferred to have a sense of this information while actually waking up, e.g. will it be rainy or sunny today. The solution disclosed in the prior art is too abstract since it is not explicit how to link certain visual light characteristics to weather or other type of information.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a sound device comprising: output means for generating an output sound signal; a memory unit for storing a set of informative sound signals; a receiver for receiving a contextual parameter; and control means for extracting an informative sound signal from the set as a function of a value the contextual parameter received by the receiver, and for delivering said informative sound signal to the output means. The invention makes it possible to receive information of an event external to the sound device (e.g. what the weather is) and to convert said event into an informative sound signal for the device user via a memory unit containing a set of informative sound signals, control means for extracting an informative sound signal from the set as a function of the event received by the receiver and output means for generating the informative sound signal thus extracted.
Beneficially, the receiver is a sensor for sensing a contextual parameter. Such a sensor is for example a barometer for measuring an atmospheric pressure.
The sound device may further comprise a memory unit for storing conventional sound signal; and a sound mixer for mixing the conventional sound signal and the informative sound signal and for delivering the mixed sound signal to the output means.
According to an embodiment of the invention, the receiver a radio receiver. The radio receiver may be adapted to receive text data comprising the contextual parameter, and the control means comprises text recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the text data. Alternatively, the radio receiver may be adapted to receive audio data, and the control means comprises audio recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the audio data.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the sensor comprises a camera unit, and the control means comprises video recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the pictures captured by the camera unit.
Still according to another embodiment of the invention, the sensor comprises a microphone, and the control means comprises audio recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the sound captured by the microphone.
The present invention extends to an alarm clock and a mobile phone comprising such a sound device.
The present invention finally relates to a method of generating an informative sound signal with a sound device, comprising the steps of: receiving a contextual parameter from a source external to the sound device, extracting an informative sound signal from a set of informative sound signals stored in the sound device on the basis of a value the contextual parameter, and generating an output sound signal using the informative sound signal.
These and other aspects of the present invention will be apparent from, and elucidated with reference to, the embodiment described herein. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a schematic block diagram of a first embodiment of the sound device in accordance with the invention, and
Figure 2 is a schematic block diagram of a second embodiment of the sound device in accordance with the invention.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a sound device adapted to deliver sound signal as a function of contextual information. The contextual information can be, for example, weather information, traffic information, stock information or news.
The sound device in accordance with the invention is described in Figure 1. Such a sound device 10 comprises: output means 11, such as a loudspeaker, for generating an output sound signal; a memory unit 12 containing a set of informative sound signals; - a sensor 13 for sensing a contextual parameter; control means 14, such as a controller or a processor, for extracting an informative sound signal from the set as a function of a value the contextual parameter sensed by the sensor, and for delivering said informative sound signal to the output means.
The informative sound signal can be preloaded in the memory unit or can also be downloaded via the Internet or recorded from a radio program using a sound recorder incorporated in the sound device.
In addition, the sound device may comprise a sound mixer as disclosed in Figure 2. In this case the sound device comprises an additional memory unit 15 containing the conventional sound signal(s) (alternatively the conventional sound signal(s) can be also stored in the memory unit 12). Then the conventional sound signal and the informative sound signal are mixed via the sound mixer 16.
According to a first embodiment of the invention, the sound device is an alarm clock and it is proposed to change or to adapt the alarm clock sound/ringtone in dependence on the contextual information. As a consequence, the alarm clock sound represents the contextual information and constitutes an alternative means to convey such information. Thus, apart from having a wake-up sound signal, the alarm clock sound provides additional information. As an example, if it is (or will be) rainy the alarm clock sound incorporates sound of rain, if it is (or will be) sunny the alarm clock sound incorporates bird singing. As another example, if there are many traffic jams, the alarm clock sound incorporates many traffic sounds, such as claxons and running motors. The fact that it is (or will be) rainy or sunny can be determined from the use of a sensor such as a barometer incorporated in the alarm clock sound. The barometer is adapted to measure atmospheric pressure and if the measured atmospheric pressure is below a first threshold (e.g. 1005 hPa) than the controller of the sound device is adapted to extract the sound of the rain from the memory, optionally to mix it with the wake up sound signal using the sound mixer, and to deliver the (mixed) sound to the loudspeaker. If the measured atmospheric pressure is above a second threshold (e.g. 1020 hPa) then the control means is adapted to extract the bird singing ringtone from the memory thanks to a conventional correspondence table, optionally to mix it with the wake up sound signal using the sound mixer, and to deliver the (mixed) sound to the loudspeaker. Between the first and second threshold the sound signal outputted may be the conventional wake up signal or a sound signal mixing of the sound of rain of bird singing or any other signal indicating that the weather will be variable.
Alternatively, the sensor comprises a microphone and the control means comprises audio processing and recognition means able to recognize the sound of the rain captured by the microphone, and to extract the corresponding rainy sound signal from the memory unit. Such audio processing and recognition means comprise for example a digital signal processor adapted to compute the frequency spectrum of the sound signal captured by the microphone and to compare it with a set of predetermined frequency spectra corresponding to predetermined types of sound signals. For example, said audio processing and recognition means are able to recognize the wind noise if the sound signal captured by the microphone has a frequency spectrum substantially similar to the one typically corresponding to the sound of the wind, and the controller is then able to extract the corresponding windy sound signal from the memory unit. As another example, said audio processing and recognition means are also able to recognize the bird singing in case of sunny weather if the sound signal captured by the microphone has a frequency spectrum substantially similar to the one typically corresponding to the bird singing, and the controller is then able to extract the corresponding bird singing sound signal from the memory unit. Other types of sound signals can be captured, recognized and displayed by the output means based on the same principle, such as, for example, stepping and playing in the snow in case of cold but sunny weather. According to another embodiment, the sensor comprises a radio receiver equipped with a RDS (Radio Data System) feature, such a feature being able to transmit text information such as, for example, weather information or traffic information. Such a sensor also comprises text recognition means able to analyze the text information provided by the RDS feature and to control the output means in dependence on the analyzed text information. It is to be noted that the RDS feature can be replaced by a similar mechanism, such as, for example, the use of an additional signal superimposed on the standard radio signal. It may also be replaced by the use of teletext if the radio receiver has a cable connection or the use of web pages at specific web addresses if the radio receiver has an Internet connection. Still according to another example, the sensor comprises a radio receiver for receiving radio news and speech recognition means adapted to analyze the radio news and to extract the relevant information such as the weather information or the traffic information according to a principle known to a skilled person.
There are several different algorithms that recognize audio, whether it is speech or music. By and large, they all share one thing in common: these algorithms "listen to" and process a sample of any material that they later recognize or match. This is an application of heuristics, learning from practical experience. Several specialized audio recognizers of speech are available, for example from IBM, MacSpeech and ScanSoft.
Other embodiments are also possible based for example on the use of a camera. In that case, the sensor comprises a camera unit, and the control means comprises video recognition means for extracting the contextual information from the pictures captured by the camera unit. The detection and recognition of video objects based on chrominance or luminance values of pixels or on shapes of object is a well-known technique and will not be dealt with in the present description.
According to another embodiment of the invention, the sound device is a mobile phone and it is proposed to change or to adapt the ring tones of a receiving mobile phone in dependence of the contextual information corresponding to the caller mobile phone. As a consequence, the ring tone will also represent the contextual information according to a manner known or understandable to the user of the mobile phone. Thus, apart from having a function of signaling an incoming call or message, the ring tone sound provides additional information. For instance, if it is rainy at the callers' side the ring tone incorporates sounds of rain; if it is sunny the ring tone incorporates birds singing. As another example, the ring tone represents the environment the calling person (car, work, train station, etc). In the case of a mobile phone, the contextual information of the calling party can be retrieved according to the following ways.
According to an example, the caller phone retrieves the contextual information via an Internet connection or via a radio signal (the caller phone having radio or internet connectivity integrated). Subsequently, this information is transmitted to the receiving phone.
The caller phone can derive contextual information from its state (e.g. car hands free mode). Subsequently, this information is transmitted to the receiving phone.
The caller phone can also submit its mode of operation or location to the service operator. Subsequently, the service operator uses Internet connectivity to retrieve contextual information (usually the service operator also knows the location of its active client phones).
The receiving phone gets localization information with respect to the caller and retrieves the information via an Internet connection or via a radio signal (the receiving phone having radio or Internet connectivity integrated). The receiving phone can get this information from the caller phone directly or from the service operator.
Furthermore the user has control over which information is represented. To this end, a user interface is implemented which supports the user in selecting the information or switching of the information mode. This user interface comprises for instance a menu, a rotary knob or a multi-position switch with the options: off, weather and traffic.
It should be noted that the above-mentioned embodiments illustrate rather than limit the invention, and that those skilled in the art will be capable of designing many alternative embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. In the claims, any reference signs placed in parentheses shall not be construed as limiting the claims. The word "comprising" and "comprises", and the like, does not exclude the presence of elements or steps other than those listed in any claim or the specification as a whole. The singular reference of an element does not exclude the plural reference of such elements and vice- versa.
The invention may be implemented by means of hardware comprising several distinct elements, and by means of a suitably programmed computer. In a device claim enumerating several means, several of these means may be embodied by one and the same item of hardware. The mere fact that certain measures are recited in mutually different dependent claims does not indicate that a combination of these measures cannot be used to advantage.

Claims

1. A sound device comprising: output means (11) for generating an output sound signal; - a memory unit (12) for storing a set of informative sound signals; a receiver (13) for receiving a contextual parameter; control means (14) for extracting an informative sound signal from the set as a function of a value the contextual parameter received by the receiver, and for delivering said informative sound signal to the output means.
2. A sound device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver is a sensor for sensing a contextual parameter.
3. A sound device as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sensor is a barometer for measuring an atmospheric pressure.
4. A sound device as claimed in claim 1, further comprising: a memory unit (15) for storing conventional sound signal; and a sound mixer (16) for mixing the conventional sound signal and the informative sound signal and for delivering the mixed sound signal to the output means.
5. A sound device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the receiver comprises a radio receiver.
6. A sound device as claimed in claim 3, wherein the radio receiver is adapted to receive text or audio data, and the control means comprises recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the text or audio data.
7. A sound device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises a camera unit, and the control means comprises recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the pictures captured by the camera unit.
8. A sound device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensor comprises a microphone, and the control means comprises audio recognition means for extracting the contextual parameter from the sound captured by the microphone.
9. An alarm clock comprising a sound device as claimed in claim 1.
10. A mobile phone comprising a sound device as claimed in claim 1.
11. A method of generating an informative sound signal with a sound device, comprising the steps of: receiving a contextual parameter from a source external to the sound device, extracting an informative sound signal from a set of informative sound signals stored in the sound device on the basis of a value the contextual parameter, and generating an output sound signal using the informative sound signal.
