Abstract
A method and apparatus are disclosed for creating a three dimensional virtual object/computer interface, by: displaying an image of an interface on a display device; imaging an object in an object space; defining a plurality of depth zones within said object space, at depths corresponding to actuatable artefacts of the interface; detecting when the object intersects one of said depth zones at a location coincident with an artefact at that depth; and effecting an action corresponding to the intersection so detected. A projection slide is also disclosed which has multiple slide image planes, e.g. on front and back faces and perhaps intermediate front and back faces, as by assembling more than one slide. The images can be patterns that, when projected, will focus at different distances from the slide, and this can be used for depth discrimination when an object scene is illuminated with light through the slide. The depth discrimination can be used to add 3D realism to computer games such as the Eye Toy game, as by comprising the means for defining a plurality of depth zones in a virtual interface.
