Description
Description
METHOD FOR THE PROVISION OF CHARGED CONTENTS OF DIGITAL MULTIMEDIA BROADCASTING
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting, more particularly to a method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting to communication terminals. Background Art
[2] One of the key terminology representing modern lives is Internet. The fast spread of the Internet has brought a lot of changes in our daily lives. An Internet user can access a variety of information using a web browser. Provision of charged contents via the Internet requires effective control. When charged contents are provided via the Internet, access request message and access authorization message are transferred via the Internet network. Since the Internet network has a broad bandwidth, such messaging causes little traffic. And, request messaging and authorization messaging are performed based on the user information, irrespective of the particular individual terminals. That is, once a user is given an authorization message, he or she may access the charged contents using any terminals accessible to the Internet, without restriction of space. Access authorization is based on the user information because terminals for accessing the Internet network, or the computers, are inconvenient to carry.
[3] Control of charged contents using the broadcasting network is restricted a lot because of the narrow bandwidth. Thus, it is the common practice to control the charged contents transmitted via the broadcasting network by creating a charged broadcasting channel. That is, a user authorized to access a particular channel based on the contract with the broadcasting business operator may access the charged contents.
[4] Currently, digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) is gaining focus. The digital multimedia broadcasting is expected to spread quickly because the viewers can enjoy a variety of contents transmitted via the broadcasting network while they are moving. Through the digital multimedia broadcasting, various multimedia contents including CD-quality audio data, video data, transportation data, weather information, etc. will be provided to users. The DMB is classified into terrestrial DMB and satellite DMB, based on the means of transmission. In general, a narrower bandwidth is allocated for the digital multimedia broadcasting, compared with ordinary satellite broadcasting or terrestrial broadcasting.
[5] One of the problems to be solved with regard to the provision of contents via the digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) is effective control of charged contents. When
uplink communication was unavailable, control of charged contents was done by CAS (conditional access system). In CAS, the broadcasting business operator periodically transmits a specific message to a particular receiving terminal via the broadcasting network, so that the CAS module inside the receiving terminal can extract the corresponding encryption key with which the user can access the charged contents. However, control of charged contents based on CAS has the following problems.
[6] (I) A bandwidth has to be allocated for each receiving terminal, which causes waste of bandwidth without regard to transmission of contents. Especially, this may cause a critical problem considering the narrow bandwidth of the digital multimedia broadcasting.
[7] (2) The receiving terminal needs a special hardware, which makes the hardware construction of the receiving terminal complicated and makes it expensive.
[8] (3) Subscriber management and charging have to be done by the broadcasting business operator. That is, the broadcasting business operator has to manage all the subscriber data using a subscriber database and check if the fee for the charged contents has been paid.
[9] (4) In case of terrestrial DMB, contents are usually provided by more than one broadcasting business operator. In case the broadcasting business operators choose different CAS, the receiving terminal has to deal with more than one CAS. This can be a critical disadvantage for the terrestrial DMB with no uplink communication capacity. After all, each receiving terminal has to be equipped with more than one CAS module.
Disclosure of Invention
Technical Problem
[10] An object of the present invention is to provide an effective method for the provision of charged contents transmitted by digital multimedia broadcasting in order to solve the afore-mentioned problems. Especially, the present invention improves user convenience through the effective provision of charged contents to DMB receiving terminals without uplink communication capacity.
[11] Another object of the present invention is to enable charging based on the subscription of charged contents by authorizing access to the charged contents based on the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal and the program code of the charged contents. Technical Solution
[12] In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting is provided which is characterized in that the bandwidth for the digital multimedia broadcasting is allocated only for the provision of the contents and request message and authorization message for the
charged contents are transmitted via the communication network. The request message includes the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal and the program code of the charged contents. Preferably, the request message is transmitted as a single string. That is, the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal and the program code of the charged contents included in the request message are combined to create a single string, which is transmitted via the communication network. And, the authorization message includes the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal, the program code of the charged contents and the decryption key data. The identification code of the DMB receiving terminal, the program code of the charged contents and the decryption key data included in the authorization message are combined to create a single string, which is transmitted via the communication network. [13] In a more preferred embodiment of the present invention, a method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting receiving terminal based on provision of the charged contents using a protection key and decryption of the charged contents using a decryption key is provided, which comprises the steps of: (a) transmitting charged contents protected by a protection key to a receiving terminal by digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB), (b) creating a first string by combining the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal and the program code of the charged contents, in response to the request of a user, and displaying the first string and the access data for the charged contents providing system on the DMB receiving terminal, (c) transmitting the first string and the communication terminal data to the providing system, (d) carrying out charging based on the user's communication terminal data, (e) creating a second string by adding a decryption key data to the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal and the program code of the charged contents extracted from the first string and transmitting the second string to the user's communication terminal and (f) displaying the charged contents on the DMB receiving terminal after the second string to has been input at the DMB receiving terminal.
Advantageous Effects
[14] The method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with the present invention offers the following advantages.
[15] (1) The bandwidth for the digital multimedia broadcasting is allocated only for the provision of the contents and the request message (corresponding to the first string) and the authorization message (corresponding to the second string) for the charged contents are transmitted via the communication network. This ensures effective utilization of the digital multimedia broadcasting network having a narrow bandwidth.
[16] (2) The DMB receiving terminal does not require a CAS module, and thus the
hardware construction of the receiving terminal can be simplified. This can be particularly advantageous in terrestrial DMB where charged contents are provided by more than one broadcasting business operator.
[17] (3) Contents-specific charging is possible. There is no need to set up a special channel for providing charged contents.
[18] (4) Unauthorized utilization of charged contents is prevented by restricting utilization by other people or using other terminals.
[19] (5) Uplink communication is unnecessary because request message and authorization message for charged contents are transmitted via the communication network.
[20] (6) Customer database management and charging can be done using available means of communication. The broadcasting business operator can save the cost of customer database management and charging. Brief Description of the Drawings
[21] Fig. 1 is a block diagram illustrating the method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with the present invention.
[22] Fig. 2 is a block diagram illustrating the method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention.
[23] Fig. 3 is a preferred example of the message displayed on the DMB receiving terminal of a user who wants to access the charged contents.
[24] Fig. 4 is a preferred example of the message displayed on the DMB receiving terminal of the user after access to the charged contents has been authorized. Mode for the Invention
[25] Hereinafter, the embodiments of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings. Fig. 1 is a block diagram illustrating the method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with the present invention. Charged contents are transmitted to a user's DMB receiving terminal (300) from a broadcasting system (100) via a digital multimedia broadcasting network (DMBN) (201). The charged contents are protected by a protection key and the user is not authorized to access them. Thus, the user cannot access the charged contents. If the user wants to access the charged contents, a request message is transmitted from the user to the broadcasting system (100) via a communication network (202). In response to the request message, the broadcasting system (100) transmits an authorization message for the charged contents to the user via the communication network (202). For the communication network (202), a mobile communication network is preferred, which conforms well with the mobility of DMB.
[26] One of the most important features of the method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with the present invention is that all the bandwidth of the digital multimedia broadcasting network (201) is utilized for the transmission of the contents only. Both the request message from the user and the authorization message from the broadcasting system are transmitted via the communication network (202), which outstandingly improves the efficiency of the narrow bandwidth of digital multimedia broadcasting. The method also presents a new model of providing charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting without using conditional access system (CAS), making it applicable to terrestrial DMB where conditional access system is difficult to be applied.
[27] The method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with the present invention also enables effective charging for the charged contents utilizing the communication network. Since the request messaging is made via the communication network, the conventional charging system based on the communication network can be adopted without modification. The charging can be managed effectively by adding the contents subscription fee to the communications fee. This is advantageous over the provision of charged contents through charged channels in that contents-specific charging is possible.
[28] Fig. 2 is a block diagram illustrating the method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 3 is a preferred example of the message displayed on the DMB receiving terminal of a user who wants to access the charged contents. And, Fig. 4 is a preferred example of the message displayed on the DMB receiving terminal of the user after access to the charged contents has been authorized. Charged contents protected by a protection key are transmitted from a broadcasting system (100) to a DMB receiving terminal (300) via a digital multimedia broadcasting network (DMBN) (201). The charged contents protected by the protection key require a decryption key. A purchase request message, as seen in Fig. 3, is displayed on the screen of the DMB receiving terminal (300) of the user who wants to access the charged contents. The purchase request message includes the contact number (e.g., 016-XXX-XXXX) of the charged contents providing system. Along with the contact number of the charged contents providing system, a first string (e.g., 123324393429) is provided to the user. The first string is created from the combination of the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal (300) (e.g., 123324) and the program code of the charged contents (e.g., 393429).
[29] In case of a receive-only DMB receiving terminal (300) without uplink communication capacity, the user transmits the first string to the contact number 016-XXX-XXXX using a communication terminal (400), which is transmitted to a
charging system (500) via a communication network (202). The charging system (500) carries out charging based on the user's communication terminal data. If charging is carried out successfully, the charging system (500) transmits the charging data and the first string to the contents server (101) of the broadcasting system (100). After confirming that the charging has been made successfully based on the charging data transmitted from the charging system (500), the contents server (101) of the broadcasting system (100) creates a second string (e.g., 3249234093243232). The second string is a serial number obtained by adding a decryption key data (e.g., 3232) to the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal (e.g., 324923, a serial number modified from 123324) and the program code of the charged contents (e.g., 409324, a serial number modified from 393429) extracted from the first string. The contents server (101) of the broadcasting system transmits the resultant second string to the user's communication terminal (400) via the communication network (202), passing through the charging system (500) or directly without passing through it. After receiving the second string, the user enters the second string in the text entry field of the DMB receiving terminal (300) as seen in Fig. 3. Then, the DMB receiving terminal (300) extracts the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal, the program code of the charged contents and the decryption key data from the second string.
[30] After extraction the data, it is checked if the extracted data are correct ones. That is, it is checked if the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal extracted from the second string matches that of the DMB receiving terminal (300), if the program code of the charged contents matches that of the charged contents that the user wants to access and if the protection key matches the decryption key. If authorization is completed, an access authorization message as seen in Fig. 4 is shown and the charged contents are displayed on the DMB receiving terminal (300).
[31] Another important feature of the method for the provision of charged contents of digital multimedia broadcasting in accordance with the present invention is that the identification code of the DMB receiving terminal is included in the second string, thereby restricting access to the charged contents by other terminals and preventing unauthorized access to the charged contents. Preferably, the first string and the second string are transmitted via the mobile communication network (202) in the form of text message (SMS) for quickness.
