Further, the invention provides a method for the making of dental prints for implantology.

Description

"A METHOD FOR THE MAKING OF DENTAL PRINTS AND DENTAL MODELS AND A DEVICE THEREFORE"
The present invention relates to a method for the making of dental prints and dental models, and a relevant device for carrying out said method. The present invention is particularly addressed to a method and relevant device for the making of dental prints in the field of the implantology.
In the art, are well known devices for the making of dental prints and which are apt to support a print of a complete dental arch both upper and lower. Typically, such devices are shaped as a "spoon" in order to fit to a complete dental arch. Most of the times, these devices are realised in a single body , both metallic or plastics.
The dental print is obtained when a suitable pasty material is applied on to the device, the material is then inserted in the mouth of the patient and then is pressed against the dental arch thereof, the force exerted onto the pasty material permanently deforms the latter and realises a print of the dental arch.
With this aim, there exists a first kind of devices for the making of dental prints which are completely realised in surgical metal. This kind of devices is preferred, since it guarantees high reliability of the final dental print due to the high stiffness of the metallic support and high life time.
However, these kind of devices have the main drawback which consists in that of a mandatory thoroughfully cleaning step followed by a further sterilising step each time after the use thereof, for the sake of avoiding to the patient the risk of getting serious illness in the mouth. More precisely, such devices have a plurality of holes obtained onto the surface thereof, in order to allow the pasty material to flow therein during the printing step. Such holes get filled with the pasty material, and after the hardening thereof it becomes extremely difficult the removal of the latter from the former.
Further, the cleansing step and the sterilising step are very expensive in terms of time, difficulty and costs.
On the other hand, there exist another kind of device for the making of dental prints which is disposable, and it is realised completely in a plastic material. Such kind of device guarantees high hygienic environment to the patient since is a single use device. However, this kind of disposable device for the making of dental prints has a main drawback which consists in that it has very poor stiffness due to the plastic material itself. Therefore, during the making of the dental print, the latter results most of the time to be compromised due to deformation of the device itself when the force is exerted thereon.
From the above, a low reliability for what concerns to the stiffness, precision and high precision in the use thereof is felt from the users.
Furthermore, in the field of the implantology and for the making of a dental print and where one or more implants are positioned, to this date it is provided that a first shell in a resin material is realised onto a first dental print of the patient (i.e., the dental print where no implants have been inserted yet).
Subsequently, the shell is drilled at the exact position of the implant and at the corresponding dental arch, in order to allow the implant to project outside the shell during the subsequent step of making the dental print. For the making of the dental print it is provided the covering of the shell with wax at the drilled part and the subsequent step of putting a pasty material therein, and the taking of the dental print. In this way, the implant it is surrounded by the wax and the former may project outside the latter and avoiding at the same time that the pasty material flows outside the drill realised onto the shell.
However, also this method has the main drawback which is due to the fact that many steps are provided, i.e. a first step for the making of a first dental print, a second step for the making of the shell onto said dental print, a third drilling step.
To this date, these steps are the only manner to obtain the above results, and this method it is particularly expensive in terms of time and materials.
Therefore, the main object of the present invention is to solve the abovementioned drawbacks by providing a new method for the making of dental prints in the implantology field which provides the making of a dental print of a patient by few and very easy steps, consequently reducing the costs related to work and materials.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a new method for the making of dental prints in the implantology field which provides the use of a disposable device having high reliability in terms of correspondence between the print and the model, higher stiffness and sterile environment.
Further object of the present invention is to provide new method for the making of dental prints in the implantology field which provides the use of a device for the making of dental prints which is of a very simple realisation, high reliability, and at the same of a low cost.
Therefore, the present invention provides a new method for the making of dental prints in the implantology field according to claim 8.
Further, the present invention provides a device for the making of dental prints according to claim 1.
Now, a detailed description of a preferred embodiment of the method and the device for the making of dental prints according to the present invention, will be given and having an illustrative and non limiting purposes, with reference to the annexed drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a prospective view of a first embodiment of the device for the making of dental prints, according to the present invention;

• With reference to figures from 1 to 4, the device for the making of dental prints of the present invention is shown therein. According to the invention, it is provided a flat supporting member 1 substantially "Y" shaped and having a first part 11 which corresponds to the closing plane of the dental arch of a patient. The part 11 is connected at the middle thereof to a projecting part 12 which realises the part for the grabbing and handling of the device once assembled (better shown in the following).
The supporting member 1 may be conveniently constituted of metallic material or a similar material with high stiffness.
Onto the surface of the part 11 and at central part thereof an opening 14 which extends for almost the whole length of the part 11 is obtained. As it will be better understood in the following, the opening 14 is positioned at the closing plane of the dental arch.
Further, the opening 14 is divided at the central part thereof by a second opening 13 obtained at the middle portion of the member 1 (better shown in the following).
Furthermore, at each part of rear side of the supporting member 1 a third opening 15 is obtained. The function of these openings 13, 14 and 15 will be better shown in the following.
On the other hand, a mould or shell structure 2 is further provided, the latter having a functional anatomical shape since it is provided both to house the pasty material and for the making the print of the dental arch.
More precisely, as it is well known and as can be seen from the drawings, the mould 2 may have a central part which according to the use thereof may be hollow in order to house the tongue of the patient and in the case of making a the lower dental arch print thereof, while the former may be solid and constitute a palatal print for the making of a dental upper arch print of the mouth of a patient.
The mould 2 is preferably made of a thermoplastic material which is suitably chosen both for a pre-forming step and/or heat moof the ling during the step of the dental printing by a technician skilled in the art, and in order that the same be particularly convenient for being disposable and for the low cost of the material.
Further, when needed onto the mould 2 a plurality of holes and/or ribs and/or opening 21 are obtained, in order to allow the pasty material may flow through said plurality of holes 21 during the making of the dental print.
Furthermore, on the lower surface of the mould 2 movable connecting means 22 are obtained and for the movable connecting to said supporting member 1 (not shown in the figure but better shown in the following).
With reference now to the figures 5, 6A and 6B, the function of the device for the making of dental prints of the present invention will be shown.
How it will be apparent from the figures, the mould 2 has onto the lower surface thereof three projecting members 22 integrally obtained and corresponding to the openings 13 and 15 of the supporting member 1 when the former is mounted onto the latter. The projecting members 22 are shaped in such a way that the they can be exactly inserted into the corresponding opening 13 and 15, and have an undercut terminal portion so that when inserted in the relevant opening 13 and/or 15 a snap sliding reversible connection is obtained in the latter (as shown in Figures 6A and 6B).
For the assembling/disassembling of the mould 2 onto the supporting member 1 the following steps are to be taken.
At first, the mould 2 is narrowed to the supporting member 1 and the central member 22 is inserted into the corresponding opening 13. Then, by let the mould 2 slide onto the surface of the supporting member 1 , the members 22 slide at the same time into the relevant openings 13 and 15 until the blocking thereof is obtained. In this condition, the mould 2 is fixed onto the supporting member 1 and a dental print of a patient may be taken, both being of an upper or a lower dental arch.
Subsequently to the making of the print, the mould 2 may be easily removed/disconnected from the supporting member 1 by reversing the mounting steps above described, thanks to the reversibility of the connection between the members 22 and the relevant openings 13 and 15.
According to a first advantageous aspect of the present invention, the device for the making of dental prints so constituted is particularly suitable for the making of dental prints both upper and lower dental arches with a single supporting member 1.
Further, according to another advantageous aspect of the present invention, the mould 2 when disconnected from the supporting member 1 the former blocks the hardened printing material therein, and it is provided that the mould 2 having the dental print thereon may be sent to the laboratory for the subsequent working steps of the taken dental print, whilst the supporting member 1 may be further used again following a sterilising step, thereby saving a lot of space, time and costs to the user.
With reference now to the figures from 7A to 7C, 8 and 9 the method for the making of a dental print in a patient having a bone implant is shown, according to the present invention.
In the figures from 7A to 7C a portion of a dental arch of a patient having a bone implant is schematically shown. As it is already known in the art, the implantology procedure provides that in a part of a dental arch 30 of a patient a bone implant 31 may be inserted in a corresponding lacking tooth.
It must be here draw attention to the fact that during the subsequent steps to the bone implanting 31, with the aim of making a dental prosthesis it is necessary to make a mould which exactly reproduces the dental print of the patient having the bone implant already inserted. With this object, it is necessary that the exact position and orientation of the implant 31 with respect to the closing dental plane be clearly identified.
For the making of the mould, first a copying member 32 (known with the technical name "transfert") is mounted onto the implant 31 and blocked therein by means of a threaded connection. The transfert 32 reproduces exactly the axis of the implant 31 with respect to the closing dental plane of the patient.
Therefore, the new method provides that at first the assembled device for the making of dental prints of the present invention is inserted into the mouth of the patient, and the mould 2 being realised in a thermoplastic material which is transparent. In this condition, the technician may note and mark onto the lower part of the mould 2 and through the opening 14 the exact position of the transfert 32 with respect to the closing dental plane, the opening 14 rendering the whole marking step fully accessible.
Subsequently, the device for the making of dental prints is fully extracted from the mouth and a drilling 33 on the mould 2 is realised at the marking realised by the technician, the drill 33 indexes the exact position of the transfert 32 with respect to the closing dental plane. Subsequently, the drill 33 is closed with wax and the mould 2 is filled with the pasty material for the printing. In this condition, the device for the making of dental prints is then inserted into the mouth of the patient and subsequently the print of the dental arch portion is realised. More precisely, during the imprinting the transfert 32 moves the wax through the drill 33 into the mould 2, then passes through the opening 14 and projects from the lower side of the mould 2 outwardly and without that the pasty material be flown out.
For the removal of the device for the making of dental prints after the hardening of the pasty material, it is necessary first unlock the transfert 32 from the bone implant 31 by unscrew the locking screw on the former. After the unlocking, it is possible remove the device for the making of dental prints that holds the transfert 32 conglomerated into the hardened material from the mouth of the patient. In this condition, the mould 2 it is easily dismounted from the supporting member 1 as already explained before.
Once disconnected from the supporting member 1 , the mould 2 functions as a mould where the transfert 32 is inglobated.
The subsequent step provides the locking of a further member (not shown in the figures and better known as the "analog") onto the free end of the transfert 32 by means of a threaded locking, and with the aim of reproduce the exact position of the bone implant 31 with respect to the dental arch of the patient. In this condition, when the transfert 32 and the relevant analog are connected by the relevant screw, the die moulding is realised into the dental print and a model of the dental arch incorporating the analog of the bone implant 31 is realised.
So, according to another advantageous aspect of the present invention, the device for the making of dental prints so constituted solves the drawbacks of the state of the art in the making of dental prints in patients having bone implants, since it is not necessary any more starting from the making of a first shell in a resin material and the relevant dental moulding to a patient (i.e., the moulding when the implant it has not been implanted yet into the patient bone). More precisely, thanks to the device for the making of dental prints of the present invention , it suffices to mark the exact position of the transfert 32 onto the mould 2 trough the opening 14 and then to drill the hole 33 for housing the transfert 32 during the subsequent step of a normal procedure for the making of a dental print, thereby avoiding further related costs of time and material, and obviously reducing notably working costs.
A further advantage of the device for the making of dental prints of the present invention is that the device cab be used both in implantology and orthodontics. As a matter of facts, the supporting member 1 so constituted guarantees higher stiffness to the assembly mould/supporting member thereby giving higher reliability and precision to the making of dental prints both in orthodontics and implantology uses thereof.

Claims

1. A device for the making of dental prints of a patient, comprising a supporting member (1) substantially flat and "Y" shaped, and a mould member (2) anatomically shaped and for the containing of a material for the making of a dental print, said mould member (2) being suitable for being mounted onto said supporting member(1), characterized in that said supporting member (1) and said mould member (2) comprise locking means (13, 15, 22) for the mutual reversible locking, and in that said supporting member (1) substantially corresponds to the the position of the closing dental plane with respect to the dental print.
2. Device for the making of dental prints according to claimi , wherein said supporting member(1) comprises a part arch shaped (11) wherein a first opening (14) is obtained, the opening (14) extending for almost the whole length of said part (11), and a projecting elongated part (12) constituting an handle for the handling of said supporting member(1).
3. Device for the making of dental prints according to claim 1 o 2, wherein said reversible locking means comprises: a second opening (13) obtained at the central part of said supporting member (1); a pair of third openings (15) each being obtained at a rear border end of said supporting member (1); and three projecting members (22) integrally obtained onto the lower surface of said mould member (2) for cooperating with said second and third openings (13, 15) in a reversible locking manner, respectively.
4. Device for the making of dental prints according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said supporting member (1) is made of a material having high stiffness, and in any case greater than the stiffness of said mould member (2).
5. Device for carrying out dental prints according to the preceding claim, wherein said mould member (2) is made of a thermoplastic material.
6. Device for the making of dental prints according to preceding claim, wherein said mould member (2) is made of a thermoplastic transparent material.
7. Device for the making of dental prints according to any of the preceding claims, wherein said mould member (2) is anatomical shaped for the making of a upper or lower dental arch prints.
8. A method for the making of dental prints and dental models, characterized in that it comprises the following steps:
Locking in a reversible manner an anatomic mould member (2) made of a thermoplastic material and for the containing of a dental printing material onto a flat supporting member (1), the latter corresponding to the closing dental plane of the dental print to be taken;
- Fill said mould member (2) with said dental printing material and realise a dental print;
- Unlock said mould member (2) when containing the dental print from said supporting member (1); and
- Cast modelling of said dental print onto said mould member (2) but disconnected from said supporting member(1).
9. A method for the making of dental prints and dental models for implantology, and wherein one or more bone implants (31) in a mouth of a patient are provided, characterized in that it comprises the following steps:
- Lock in a reversible manner an anatomical mould member (2) made of a transparent thermoplastic material and for containing of a dental printing material onto a flat supporting member (1) which corresponds to the closing dental plane of said dental print to be taken, the flat supporting member (1) having an open part (14), the arrangement being such that said mould member (2) and said supporting member (1) when assembled constitute a device for the making of dental prints having said open part (14) at the bottom part of said mould member (2);
- Reversible lock a transfer! (32) to a bone implant (31) into the mouth by respective locking means thereof ;
Insert said device for the making of dental prints into the mouth of a patient, and at the dental part corresponding to said bone implant (31) mark on the lower surface of said member (2) the exact position of said transfert (32) with respect to said closing dental plane; Take out said device for the making of dental prints from said mouth and realise a drilling (33) at said mark onto said lower surface of said mould member (2);
- Close with specific material said drill (33) and fill the mould member (2) with said dental printing material and realise the dental print of the patient;
Unlock said transfert (32) from said bone implant (31) and take out said device for the making of dental prints from the mouth with said transfert (32) conglobated within said mould member (2); Disconnect said mould member (2) having the dental print from said supporting member (1); Lock in reversible manner the free end of said transfert (32) into said print material to an analog member which reproduces the exact position of the bone implant (31); and
Realise the cast moulding of said dental print into said mould member (2) but separately from said supporting member (1).
