カラー液晶表示装置は、透過型のカラー液晶表示パネルを背面側からバックライト 装置にて照明することでカラー画像を表示させるバックライト方式が主流となっている 。ノ ックライト装置の光源としては、蛍光管を使った白色光を発光する CCFL (Cold C athode Fluorescent Lamp)が多く用いられている。
CCFLは、蛍光管内に水銀を封入するため、環境への悪影響が考えられるため、 今後、バックライト装置の光源として、 CCFLに代わる光源が求められている。そこで 、 CCFLに代わる光源として発光ダイオード(LED : Light Emitting Diode)が有望視 されている。青色発光ダイオードの開発により、光の 3原色である赤色光、緑色光、青 色光をそれぞれ発光する発光ダイオードが揃ったことになる。したがって、この発光 ダイオードをバックライト装置の光源とすることで、カラー液晶表示パネルを介した色 光の色純度が高くなるため、色再現範囲を NTSC方式で規定される程度、更に、そ れを超える程度まで広げることが期待されて 、る。

そこで、本発明は、上述したような問題を解決するために提案されたものであり、色 度、輝度にばらつきのある発光ダイオードを無駄にすることなく用いて光源を構成し た場合でも、色度ムラ、輝度ムラのない白色光を出射し、カラー液晶表示パネルの照 明光とするバックライト装置を提供することを目的とする。

更に、本発明に係るバックライト装置の他の実施形態は、透過型のカラー液晶表示 パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置であって、光源として、複数 の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の色度の白色光を発光する複数の主発 光素子列と、複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の色度近傍の色度の白 色光を発光する主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、主発光素子列、副 発光素子列を、カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方向を長手方向として、カラー液晶表 示パネルの垂直方向に 1次元マトリックス状に配列させる際、副発光素子列をカラー 液晶表示パネルの中心側に配列したものである。 更にまた、本発明に係るバックライト装置の他の実施形態は、透過型のカラー液晶 表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置であって、光源として、 複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の色度の白色光を発光する複数の 主発光素子列と、複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の色度近傍の色度 の白色光を発光する主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、主発光素子 列、副発光素子列を、カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方向を長手方向として、 2次元 マトリックス状に配列させる際、副発光素子列を同一行上に隣り合って並ぶことなく配 列させるとともに、 2次元マトリックスの中心列に配列させる副発光素子列をカラー液 晶表示パネルの中心側に配列したものである。
更にまた、本発明に係るバックライト装置の他の実施形態は、透過型のカラー液晶 表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置であって、光源として、 複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の輝度を示す白色光を発光する複 数の主発光素子列と、複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の輝度より低 い輝度を示す白色光を発光する主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、主 発光素子列、副発光素子列を、カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方向を長手方向として カラー液晶表示パネルの垂直方向に 1次元マトリックス状に配列させる際、副発光素 子列をカラー液晶表示パネルの周縁側に配列するようにしたものである。
更にまた、本発明に係るバックライト装置の他の実施形態は、透過型のカラー液晶 表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置であって、光源として、 複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の輝度を示す白色光を発光する複 数の主発光素子列と、複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の輝度より低 い輝度を示す白色光を発光する主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、主 発光素子列、副発光素子列を、カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方向を長手方向として 2次元マトリックス状に配列させる際、副発光素子列をカラー液晶表示パネルの周縁 側に配列させるようにしたものである。
本発明は、色度に基づいた配列ポリシー、輝度に基づいた配列ポリシーを満たす ように配列させることで、余剰生産された発光素子列を輝度ムラ、色度ムラを発生さ せないようにしながら、無駄なく使用することができる。したがって、カラー液晶表示パ ネルを照明するバックライト装置、すなわち、カラー液晶表示パネルと、バックライト装 置とを備えたカラー液晶表示装置の製造コストを大幅に削減させることを可能とする 本発明の更に他の目的、本発明によって得られる具体的な利点は、以下において 図面を参照して説明される実施に形態力 一層明らかにされるであろう。

発明を実施するための最良の形態
以下、本発明の実施の形態を図面を参照して詳細に説明する。なお、本発明は以 下の例に限定されるものではなぐ本発明の要旨を逸脱しない範囲で、適宜変更可 能であることは!、うまでもな!/、。
本発明は、例えば図 1に示すように構成される透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100に 適用される。
この透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100は、透過型のカラー液晶表示パネル 110と、こ の液晶表示パネル 110の背面側に設けられた液晶表示用バックライト装置 140とか らなる。この透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100は、図示しないが、地上波や衛星波を 受信するアナログチューナ、デジタルチューナといった受信部、この受信部で受信し た映像信号、音声信号をそれぞれ処理する映像信号処理部、音声信号処理部、音 声信号処理部で処理された音声信号を出力するスピーカといった音声信号出力部 などを備えるようにしてもょ ヽ。
透過型のカラー液晶表示パネル 110は、ガラス等で構成された 2枚の透明な基板 ( TFT基板 111、対向電極基板 112)を互いに対向配置させ、その間隙に、例えば、 ッイステツドネマチック (TN)液晶を封入した液晶層 113を設けた構成となって 、る。 TFT基板 111には、マトリックス状に配置された信号線 114と、走査線 115と、この信 号線 114、走査線 115の交点に配置されたスイッチング素子としての薄膜トランジス タ 116と、画素電極 117とが形成されている。薄膜トランジスタ 116は、走査線 115に より、順次選択されるとともに、信号線 114から供給される映像信号を、対応する画素 電極 117〖こ書き込む。一方、対向電極基板 112の内表面には、対向電極 118及び カラーフィルタ 119が形成されて 、る場合も有る。
その場合、カラーフィルタ 119は、各画素に対応した複数のセグメントに分割されて いる。例えば、図 2に示すように、 3原色である赤色フィルタ CFR、緑色フィルタ CFG 、青色フィルタ CFBの 3つのセグメントに分割されている。カラーフィルタ 119の配列 パターンは、図 2に示すようなストライプ配列の他に、図示しないが、デルタ配列、正 方配列などがある。
再び、図 1を用いて、透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100の構成を説明をする。この透 過型カラー液晶表示装置 100は、透過型のカラー液晶表示パネル 110を 2枚の偏光 板 131, 132で挟み、ノックライト装置 140により背面側力も白色光を照射した状態 で、アクティブマトリックス方式で駆動することによって、所望のフルカラー映像を表示 させることがでさる。
ノ ックライト装置 140は、上記カラー液晶表示パネル 110を背面側から照明する。 図 1に示すように、ノ ックライト装置 140は、ここでは図示していない光源や、光源から 出射された光を白色光へと混色する機能などが組み込まれたバックライト筐体部 120 内に、拡散板 141や、拡散板 141上に重ねて配列される拡散シート 142、プリズムシ ート 143、偏光変換シート 144といった光学機能シート群 145などを備えた構成とな つている。拡散板 141は、光源力も出射された光を、内部拡散させることで、面発光 における輝度の均一化を行う。
一般に、光学機能シート群は、例えば、入射光を直交する偏光成分に分解する機 能、光波の位相差を補償して広角視野角化や着色防止を図る機能、入射光を拡散 させる機能、輝度向上を図る機能などを備えたシートで構成されており、ノ ックライト 装置 140から面発光された光をカラー液晶表示パネル 110の照明に最適な光学特 性を有する照明光に変換するために設けられている。したがって、光学機能シート群 145の構成は、上述した拡散シート 142、プリズムシート 143、偏光変換シート 144に 限定されるものではなぐ様々な光学機能シートを用いることができる。
図 3にバックライト筐体部 120内の概略構成図を示す。この図 3に示すように、ノ ック ライト筐体部 120は、赤色 (R)光を発光する赤色発光ダイオード 21R、緑色 (G)光を 発光する緑色発光ダイオード 21G、青色 (B)光を発光する青色発光ダイオード 21B を光源として用いている。なお、以下の説明において、赤色発光ダイオード 21R、緑 色発光ダイオード 21G、青色発光ダイオード 21Bを総称する場合は、単に発光ダイ オード 21と呼ぶ。
この発光ダイオード 21を、図 3に示すように、基板 22上に所望の順番で列状に複 数配列させることで、一つの発光ダイオードユニット 21 (m、 nは、自然数。 )が形成

される。この発光ダイオードユニット 21 力 ノ ックライト装置 140において、光源であ

る発光ダイオード 21を配列する際の最小単位となる。なお、以下の説明においては 、発光ダイオードユニット 21 も光源と呼称する。

発光ダイオードユニット 21 を形成するために、基板 22上に発光ダイオード 21を

配列する順番は、図 3に示すような、赤色発光ダイオード 21R、緑色発光ダイオード 2 1G、青色発光ダイオード 21Bを繰り返し単位とする最も基本的な配列の仕方や、図 示しないが、例えば、緑色発光ダイオード 21Gを等間隔で配列させ、等間隔で配列 させた、隣り合う緑色発光ダイオード 21Gの間に、赤色発光ダイオード 21R、青色発 光ダイオード 21Bを交互に配列させるような順番など様々な配列の仕方がある。この 発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、後述するように、所定の範囲内の色度、輝度となる 白色光を出射するように発光ダイオード 21が選択されることになる。

mn の長手方向が垂直方向となるように配列してもよいし、両者を組み合わせてもよい。 なお、発光ダイオードユニット 21 の長手方向を、水平方向或いは垂直方向とする

ように配列する手法は、従来までのバックライト装置の光源として利用して 、た CCFL の配列の仕方と同じになるため、蓄積された設計ノウハウを利用することができ、コス トの削減や、製造までに要する時間を短縮することができる。
ノ ックライト筐体部 120の内壁面 120aは、発光ダイオード 21から発光された光の 利用効率を高めるために反射加工がなされた反射面となっている。また、ノ ックライト 装置 140内〖こは、図示しないが、光源である発光ダイオード 21から出射された各色 光を色度ムラの少ない白色光に混色する混色機能を備えたダイバータプレートが設 けられている。このダイバータブレートで混色された光は、上述した、拡散板 141、光 学機能シート群 145を介して白色光としてバックライト装置 140から出射され、カラー 液晶表示パネル 110を背面側から照明する。
図 4に、透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100を組み上げた際に、図 1に示す透過型力 ラー液晶表示装置 100に付した X— X線で切断した際の断面図を一部示す。図 4に 示すように、液晶表示装置 100を構成するカラー液晶表示パネル 110は、透過型力 ラー液晶表示装置 100の外部筐体となる外部フレーム 101と、内部フレーム 102とに よって、スぺーサ 103a, 103bを介して挟み込むように保持される。また、外部フレー ム 101と、内部フレーム 102との間には、ガイド部材 104が設けられており、外部フレ ーム 101と、内部フレーム 102によって挟まれたカラー液晶表示パネル 110が長手 方向へずれてしまうことを抑制している。
一方、透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100を構成するノ ックライト装置 140は、上述し たように光学機能シート群 145が積層された導光板 141と、光源である発光ダイォー ドュニット 21 を覆うようにして設けられた、各発光ダイオード 21から出射された赤色 mn
(R)光、緑色 (G)光、青色 (B)光を混色させるための拡散導光板 (ダイバータブレー ト) 125とを備えている。また、拡散導光板 125と、ノ ックライト筐体部 120との間には 、反射シート 126が配されている。
拡散導光板 125は、光源として 3原色 (R, G, B)を発光する発光ダイオード 21を用 いているため混色機能を有し、発光ダイオード 21から出射された光、反射シート 126 で反射された光を拡散させる。
反射シート 126は、その反射面が、拡散導光板 125の光入射面 125aと対向するよ うに、かつ発光ダイオード 21の発光方向よりもバックライト筐体部 120側となるように 配されている。反射シート 126は、例えば、シート基材上に銀反射膜、低屈折率膜、 高屈折率膜を順に積層することで形成された銀増反射膜などである。この反射シート 126は、主に発光ダイオード 125から発光され、拡散導光板 125で反射されて入射 した光や、バックライト筐体部 120の反射加工を施され反射面とされた内壁面 120a にて反射された光などを反射する。
ノ ックライト装置 140が備える拡散板 141、拡散導光板 125、反射シート 126は、図 4に示すように、それぞれが互いに対向するように配列されており、ノ ックライト筐体部 120に複数設けられた光学スタット 105によって、互いの対向間隔を保ちながら当該 バックライト装置 140のノ ックライト筐体部 120内に保持されている。このとき、拡散板 141は、ノ ックライト筐体部 120に設けられたブラケット部材 108でも保持されることに なる。
また、図 4に示すように、各発光ダイオード 21は、詳細を省略するがそれぞれ発光 バルブを榭脂ホルダによって保持するとともに、榭脂ホルダカゝら一対の端子が突出さ れてなる。各発光ダイオード 21には、光源カゝら発せられた光を側面カゝら放射させる光 学部品 21aが設けられた側面放射発光ダイオード、すなわち、出射光の主成分を発 光バルブの外周方向に出射する指向性を有するいわゆるサイドエミッション型の LE Dが用いられている。
なお、側面放射発光ダイオードについては、例えば特開 2003— 8068号公報ゃ特 開 2004— 133391号公報などに開示されている。 このような構成の透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100は、例えば、図 5に示すような駆 動回路 200により駆動される。駆動回路 200は、カラー液晶表示パネル 110や、バッ クライト装置 140の駆動電源を供給する電源部 210、カラー液晶表示パネル 110を 駆動する Xドライバ回路 220及び Yドライバ回路 230、外部から供給される映像信号 や、当該透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100が備える図示しない受信部で受信され、映 像信号処理部で処理された映像信号が、入力端子 240を介して供給される RGBプ ロセス処理部 250、この RGBプロセス処理部 250に接続された画像メモリ 260及び 制御部 270、バックライト装置 140を駆動制御するバックライト駆動制御部 280などを 備えている。
この駆動回路 200において、入力端子 240を介して入力された映像信号は、 RGB プロセス処理部 250により、クロマ処理などの信号処理がなされ、更に、コンポジット 信号力もカラー液晶表示パネル 110の駆動に適した RGBセパレート信号に変換され て、制御部 270に供給されるとともに、画像メモリ 260を介して Xドライバ 220に供給さ れる。
また、制御部 270は、上記 RGBセパレート信号に応じた所定のタイミングで、 Xドラ ィバ回路 220及び Yドライバ回路 230を制御して、上記画像メモリ 260を介して Xドラ ィバ回路 220に供給される RGBセパレート信号で、カラー液晶表示パネル 110を駆 動することにより、上記 RGBセパレート信号に応じた映像を表示する。
ノ ックライト駆動制御部 280は、電源 210から供給される電圧から、パルス幅変調( PWM)信号を生成し、バックライト装置 140の光源である各発光ダイオード 21を駆動 する。一般に発光ダイオードの色温度は、動作電流に依存するという特性がある。し たがって、所望の輝度を得ながら、忠実に色再現させる (色温度を一定とする)には、 パルス幅変調信号を使って発光ダイオード 21を駆動し、色の変化を抑える必要があ る。
ユーザインタフェース 300は、上述した図示しな 、受信部で受信するチャンネルを 選択したり、同じく図示しない音声出力部で出力させる音声出力量を調整したり、力 ラー液晶表示パネル 110を照明するバックライト装置 140からの白色光の輝度調節、 ホワイトバランス調節などを実行するためのインタフェースである。 例えば、ユーザインタフェース 300から、ユーザが輝度調節をした場合には、駆動 回路 200の制御部 270を介してバックライト駆動制御部 280に輝度制御信号が伝わ る。バックライト駆動制御部 280は、この輝度制御信号に応じて、パルス幅変調信号 のデューティ比を、赤色 (R)発光ダイオード 21R、緑色 (G)発光ダイオード 21G、青 色 (B)発光ダイオード 21B毎に変えて、赤色 (R)発光ダイオード 21R、緑色 (G)発光 ダイオード 21G、青色 (B)発光ダイオード 21Bを駆動制御することになる。
続、て、透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100が備えるノ ックライト装置 140の光源とし て用 、る発光ダイオードユニット 21 の選択の仕方について説明をする。

一般に、発光ダイオードは、色度、輝度ともに、ばらつきの高い発光素子 (発光デバ イス)である。ノ ックライト装置 140の光源として用いる発光ダイオード 21も、各色光を 発光する発光ダイオード 21間で、例外なく色度、輝度のばらつきが高いものが使用 されること〖こなる。
そこで、カラー液晶表示パネル 110を照明するバックライト装置 140から出射された 白色光が、所望の色度、輝度となるように、光源として使用する発光ダイオード 21を 適切に選択する必要がある。このとき、所望の色度、輝度とすることだけを考慮してし まうと、製造された発光ダイオード 21の中から選択される発光ダイオード 21に偏りが 生じ、使用されることがない発光ダイオード 21、つまり、余剰な発光ダイオード 21が 増加してしま 、、無駄なコストが発生してしまうことになる。
したがって、ノ ックライト装置 140の光源には、色度、輝度にばらつきを有する発光 ダイオード 21から満遍なく選択しつつ、目標とする色度、輝度の白色光を形成するよ うに適切な組み合わせが決められることになる。
カラー液晶表示パネル 110が大型化された場合には、光源として使用される発光 ダイオード 21の数も大幅に増加するため、発光ダイオード 21の色度、輝度を一つず つ検証し、目標とする色度、輝度となる白色光が得られるような組み合わせを考える ことは非常に困難である。そこで、上述した発光ダイオードユニット 21 単位で、色度

、輝度を考慮して所望の白色光を得られるような、発光ダイオードユニット 21 の最
mn 適な組み合わせを決定することで、光源として用いる発光ダイオード 21の選択を容 易〖こすることが考えられる。つまり、ノ ックライト装置 140の光源は、発光ダイオード 2 1単体の集合体として構成されているのではなくて、発光ダイオード 21を複数備えた 発光素子群である発光ダイオードユニット 21 の集合体として構成されていると捉え

つまり、発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、当該発光ダイオードユニット 21 を構成す

そこで、このように色度のばらつきのある発光ダイオード 21を用いて形成された発 光ダイオードユニット 21 を、白色光の色度に基づいて、例えば、図 7に示すような、 mn
XYZ表色系の xy色度図(国際照明委員会(CIE : Commission Internationale de l'Ecl airage)が 1931年に定めた。)中に設けられた色度範囲のグレード A、 B、 C、 Dのい ずれかに分類する。実際には、発光ダイオードユニット 21 を分類するグレードは、 mn
形成された発光ダイオードユニット 21 が発光する白色光の色度のばらつき程度に mn
応じて、図 7に示す以外の広い範囲にも設けられることになる。いずれの場合も、発 光ダイオードユニット 21 は、ノ ックライト装置 140において目標としている白色光の mn
色度点近傍に最も多く存在するような分布となる。
ここで、ノ ックライト装置 140のバックライト筐体部 120内に配列させる発光ダイォー ドユニット 21 の配列位置による影響を検証する。例えば、図 6に示すようにバックラ mn
イト筐体部 120内に発光ダイオードユニット 21 に配列させ、全ての発光ダイオード mn
ユニット 21 を点灯させた際の輝度と、発光ダイオード 21 を 1行ずつ点灯させた際 mn mn
の輝度とを比較すると図 8に示すような結果となる。
図 8に示す横軸は、図 6に示したバックライト装置 140における垂直方向の位置と一 致している。図 8に示す横軸のマイナス方向は、発光ダイオードユニット 21 と、発光 mn ダイオード 21 との中間位置を中心とした際の上方向と一致しており、図 8に示す横 mn
軸のプラス方向は、同じ中間位置を中心とした際の下方向と一致している。また、図 8 において、発光ダイオード 21 を 1行ずつ点灯させた際のデータは、重畳させてある mn 図 8に示すように、発光ダイオードユニット 21 を全て点灯させた際の輝度 Pと、各 mn 1 発光ダイオードユニット 21 を単独で点灯させた際の輝度 Pとは、約 1 %程度の差し かないことが分かる。したがって、ある特定の位置に配列された発光ダイオードュ-ッ ト 21 からの発光光が、ノ ックライト装置 140から出射される白色光を形成している訳 mn
ではなぐノ ックライト筐体部 120のどの位置に配列された発光ダイオードユニット 21 力もの発光光もバックライト装置 140から出射される白色光に満遍なく影響を与え mn
ていると考えられる。
図 9に、バックライト装置 140から出射される白色光へ、図 6に示した各発光ダイォ ード 21 力 発光される光がどれだけ寄与しているかを重みとして示す。図 9に示す mn
ように、各発光ダイオード 21 力 発光される光は、 50%を超えることがない。つまり

各発光ダイオード 21 によって発光される光の照度分布は、バックライト筐体部 120

内の比較的広 、範囲に広がって 、ると考えられる。
したがって、この結果を色度にあてはめた場合、ノ ックライト装置 140の光源に用い る発光ダイオード 21 間に、明らかに色度ムラを生じてしまう程の色度差があった場

合でも、バックライト筐体部 120内に配列させることで色度ムラが解消する方向で光 が混合することが分かる。つまり、同じバックライト筐体部 120内に色度差の異なる発 光ダイオードユニット 21 を積極的に配列させても色度ムラを解消させることが可能

であるため、上述した図 7に示すように色度の違いに応じて分類された、異なるダレ ード間の発光ダイオードユニット 21 を同一のバックライト筐体部 120内に配列させ

ることがでさる。
このようなバックライト装置 140の性質を踏まえ、図 7に示すような色度図中にてダレ ード分けされた発光ダイオードユニット 21 から、適切に発光ダイオード 21 を選択
mn mn し、色度ムラを更に解消させるように配列させる。
このとき、同一のバックライト装置 140に光源として用いる発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、 2種類のグレードから選択されたものに限定する。これは、ノ ックライト装置 140 mn
を量産する際の作業工程の煩雑さを解消するための措置である。
発光ダイオードユニット 21 を選択するグレードの組み合わせは、色度が近い程よ
mn
い。つまり、図 7に示すグレードでは、(グレード A,グレード: B)、(グレード A,グレード D)、(グレード B,グレード C)、(グレード C,グレード D)という組み合わせから、それ ぞれ発光ダイオードユニット 21 を選択することが望ましい。また、(グレード A,ダレ ード C)、(グレード B,グレード D)という組み合わせも考えられる力 上述した 4種類の 組み合わせよりも色度ムラを解消させる困難度が高くなつてしまう。
発光ダイオードユニット 21 を選択するグレードの組み合わせが決定されると、次

は、ノ ックライト筐体部 120内での配列位置を決定することになる。上述したように、 発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、配列位置に応じて、ノ ックライト装置 140として出射

mnを配列する際には、配列位置に応じた重みを考慮することで、色度差の影響を最 も抑制させた配列位置を求めることができる。
上述したように、発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、ある目標となる色度の白色光とな

るようにばらつきのある複数の発光ダイオード 21を配列させて形成されている。した がって、目標の色度に近いグレードの色度を示す発光ダイオードユニット 21 の数
mn が、圧倒的に多くなり、目標の色度力 遠ざかるにつれて、その色度を示す発光ダイ オードユニット 21 の相対的な数は減少することになる。

したがって、 2種類のグレードの発光ダイオードユニット 21 を選択する際も、色度

に応じてグレードに分類した際に、数が多くなつたグレードの発光ダイオードユニット 21 を、ノ ックライト筐体部 120全体に配置させる主となる発光ダイオードユニット 21 mn

への影響をより分かりやすく示すため、図 7において、色度差が大きくなるワーストケ ースであるグレード Aと、グレード Cに属する発光ダイオードユニット 21 を用いること

にする。具体的には、図 7に示すグレード Aに属し、色度点 aの白色光を発光する発 光ダイオードユニット 21 を主となる発光ダイオードユニット 21 とし、グレード Cに属

(2)グレード Cの発光ダイオードユニット 21 を複数行使用した場合 続いて、ダレ mn

た、図 6に示すバックライト装置 140において、この発光ダイオードユニット 21 を、上 mn から順にグレード Cに属し、色度点 cの白色光を発光する発光ダイオードユニット 21 に入れ替える場合につ!、て検討する。
図 12は、グレード Cに属する発光ダイオードユニット 21 を順番に入れ替えて配列 mn
した際のバックライト装置 140の垂直方向の各位置における色度点の X座標を、上述 した配列位置毎の重みを考慮して算出した結果である。また、図 13は、ノ ックライト 装置 140から出射される出射面内における白色光の X座標の最低色度と、最高色度 との差である色度差 Δ χを、配列させるグレード Cに属する発光ダイオードユニット 21 の行数毎に算出した図である。 図 12、図 13に示す結果から、色度の異なる発光ダイオードユニット 21 を、ノ ック mn ライト筐体部 120内に複数行配列する際、複数行並べて配列させると、出射される白 色光の出射面内における色度差が大きくなつてしまい色度ムラが強く現れてしまう可 能性が高いことが分かる。
そこで、今度は、グレード Cに属する発光ダイオードユニット 21 を複数配列させる mn
場合において、複数行並ばないような配列とすることを考える。図 14は、グレード こ 属する発光ダイオードユニット 21 を、発光ダイオードユニット 21 、21 、21 とし mn 21 41 61 て、一つ置きに配列させた場合と、同じくグレード Cに属する発光ダイオードユニット 2 1 を、発光ダイオードユニット 21 、21 として、 2行目と 5行目に配列させた場合の mn 21 51

副となる発光ダイオードユニット 21 を複数行配列させる際に、 1行毎にある程度の mn
間隔を持って配列させな力つた場合、大多数を占める主となる色度の発光ダイオード ユニット 21 力も出射された白色光と混じり合うことなぐ副となる発光ダイオードュ- mn
ット 21 力 出射された白色光の色度が固まって表示されてしまうことになり、色度ム mn
ラが顕著となってしまう。
また、 1行だけ副となる発光ダイオードユニット 21 を配列させる際の検証結果から mn
明らかになったように、ノ ックライト筐体部 120の上端部又は下端部に配列させた場 合には、ノ ックライト筐体部 120内壁面 120aに施された光の利用効率を上昇させる ための反射機能によって反射された光が強くなり、上端部又は下端部付近で色が固 まって見えてしまうことになる。
したがって、図 14に示すように、グレード Cに属する発光ダイオードユニット 21 を mn
、 2行目と、 5行目、つまり、発光ダイオードユニット 21 及び発光ダイオードユニット 2

1 として配列すると、一つ置きに交互に配列した場合と比較して、出射される白色光

の出射面内における色度差が解消され、色度ムラを大幅に抑制することができる。 このように、色度のグレードが異なる発光ダイオードユニット 21 を同一のバックライ mn
ト装置 140の光源として用いる場合、小数の色度の発光ダイオードユニット 21 を力 mn ラー液晶表示パネル 110の周縁部を避け、中心側となるように配列させ、複数行配 列する場合には、例えば、 2つ置きにといったようにある程度の間隔を持って配列さ せることで、色度ムラを抑制した配列とすることができる。
< 2次元マトリックス状に配列する場合 >
上述した例では、図 7に示すように、発光ダイオードユニット 21 を 1次元マトリック mn
ス状に配列した場合の色度に基づいた配列ポリシーについて説明をした力 次に、 発光ダイオードユニット 21 を 2次元マトリックス状に配列した場合の色度に基づいた mn

心として水平方向に異なる色度の白色光が強く現れ、色度ムラを生じさせてしまうこと になる。したがって、同一行上に発光ダイオードユニット 21 が並んでしまうことを避 mn

要がある場合には、特に要求される配列ポリシーとなる。
発光ダイオードユニット 21 を 2次元マトリックス状に配列させる場合には、カラー液 mn

輝度の場合も、色度と同様に、同じバックライト装置 140内に異なる 2種類の輝度を 有する発光ダイオードユニット 21 を配列させることができる。

複数の発光ダイオード 21によって形成された発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、色度 と同様に輝度に応じたグレードに分類され、所定の範囲内の輝度差となる発光ダイ オードユニット 21 が選択される。選択された発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、カラー mn mn 液晶表示パネル 110を照明した際に、中心輝度が高くなるように配列させることにな る。これが輝度に基づいて、発光ダイオードユニット 21 を配列する際の配列ポリシ mn

20内に配列する場合には、配列させる発光ダイオードユニット 21 として、高輝度( mn

このように、色度に基づいた配列ポリシーと、輝度に基づいた配列ポリシーとを^ aみ 合わせると、色度に基づいてグレード分けされた各発光ダイオードユニット 21 は、
mn 更に輝度に基づいて、高輝度なものと、低輝度なものとに分類されることになる。した がって、ノ ックライト筐体部 120内に配列すべく 2つの異なる色度グレードから選択さ れた主となる発光ダイオードユニット 21 、副となる発光ダイオードユニット 21 も、

リシ一、輝度に基づ 、た配列ポリシー配列を同時に満たすように配列させることで、 従来までは余剰となっていた発光ダイオードユニット 21 を輝度ムラ、色度ムラを発

生させないようにしながら、無駄なく使用することができる。したがって、ノ ックライト装 置 140、つまりは透過型カラー液晶表示装置 100の製造コストを大幅に削減させるこ とがでさる。

複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、上記所定の輝度を示し、上記所定の色 度近傍の色度の白色光を発光する上記第 1の主発光素子列より少数の第 1の副発 光素子列と、

[5] 5.透過型のカラー液晶表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置 であって、
光源として、 複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の色度の白色光を発光する複数の 主発光素子列と、
複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、上記所定の色度近傍の色度の白色光 を発光する上記主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、
上記主発光素子列、上記副発光素子列を、上記カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方 向を長手方向として、上記カラー液晶表示パネルの垂直方向に 1次元マトリックス状 に配列させる際、上記副発光素子列を上記カラー液晶表示パネルの中心側に配列 させることを特徴とするバックライト装置。
[6] 6.記副発光素子列を 2行以上配列させる場合、所定の数の上記主発光素子列を介 して配列させることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 5項記載のバックライト装置。
[7] 7.透過型のカラー液晶表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置 であって、
光源として、
複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の色度の白色光を発光する複数の 主発光素子列と、
複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、上記所定の色度近傍の色度の白色光 を発光する上記主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、
上記主発光素子列、上記副発光素子列を、上記カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方 向を長手方向として、 2次元マトリックス状に配列させる際、上記副発光素子列を、同 一行上に隣り合って並ぶことなく配列させるとともに、 2次元マトリックスの中心列に配 列させる上記副発光素子列を上記カラー液晶表示パネルの中心側に配列させること を特徴とするバックライト装置。
[8] 8.上記副発光素子列を 2次元マトリックスの同一列上に 2行以上配列させる場合、所 定の数の上記主発光素子列を介して配列させることを特徴とする請求の範囲第 7項 記載のバックライト装置。
[9] 9.透過型のカラー液晶表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装置 であって、
光源として、 複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の輝度を示す白色光を発光する複 数の主発光素子列と、
複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、上記所定の輝度より低い輝度を示す白 色光を発光する、上記主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、
上記主発光素子列、上記副発光素子列を、上記カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方 向を長手方向として上記カラー液晶表示パネルの垂直方向に 1次元マトリックス状に 配列させる際、上記副発光素子列を上記カラー液晶表示パネルの周縁側に配列さ せることを特徴とするバックライト装置。
10.透過型のカラー液晶表示パネルを背面側力も白色光で照明するバックライト装 置であって、
光源として、
複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、所定の輝度を示す白色光を発光する複 数の主発光素子列と、
複数の発光素子を列状に配列させてなり、上記所定の輝度より低い輝度を示す白 色光を発光する上記主発光素子列より少数の副発光素子列とを備え、
上記主発光素子列、上記副発光素子列を、上記カラー液晶表示パネルの水平方 向を長手方向として 2次元マトリックス状に配列させる際、上記副発光素子列を、上 記カラー液晶表示パネルの周縁側に配列させることを特徴とするバックライト装置。
