Abstract

A liquid heater includes a tubular body defining a liquid chamber and a thermostat chamber. The liquid chamber is located between an element end plate sand a pipe end plate and the thermostat chamber is located between the element end plate and an electric end plate. The pipe end plate having a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet and a pressure relief valve, the liquid chamber containing at least one electric heating element, and the thermostat chamber containing at least one thermostat with a temperature sensor proji:Icting through the element end plate into the liquid chamber.

Description

WATER HEATER
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
This invention relates to liquid heater and more particularly, but not exclusively, to an instant water heater.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
According to the invention a liquid heater includes a tubular body defining a liquid chamber and a thermostat chamber, the liquid chamber being located between an element end plate and a pipe end plate, and the thermostat chamber being located between the element end plate and an electric end plate, the pipe end plate having a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, and a pressure relief valve, the liquid chamber containing at least one electric heating element, and the thermostat chamber containing at least one thermostat with a temperature sensor projecting through the element end plate into the liquid chamber.
In a preferred form of the invention, two electric heating elements are located within the liquid chamber. In this preferred form of the invention, two thermostats are provided in the thermostat chamber, with the temperature sensor of each thermostat being located adjacent a respective heating element.
Seals are preferably provided between the tubular body and the pipe end plate. The seals may be O-rings. The tubular body may be fixed to the pipe end plate and to the element end plate by being crimped to these end plates. The tubular body may comprise a length of tubing or piping which is preferably made of copper. The pipe end plate and the element end plate are preferably made of brass.
A seal may also be provided between the electric end plate and the tubular body. The seal may be an O-ring. The electric end plate is preferably removably secured to the tubular body so that the electric end plate can be removed from the tubular body to access the thermostats and associated electric wiring within the thermostat chamber. The electric end plate may be made of a suitable polymeric material. The electric end plate may be removably secured to the tubular body by at least one fastener extending through an aperture in the tubular body and into the electric end plate. The fastener may be a screw, bolt or the like.
An electric terminal block may be located within the thermostat chamber. An electric cable gland may be located on the outside of the electric end plate so that electric wires can extend through the cable gland to the electric terminal block, and from the electric terminal block to the thermostats.

Figure 1 is a partially cut-away perspective view of an instant water heater according to the invention;

Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the heater.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
An instant water heater 10 includes a copper tubular body 12 having a water chamber 14 and a thermostat chamber 16. The water chamber 14 is located between a brass element end plate 18 and a brass pipe end plate 20. The thermostat chamber 16 is located between the element end plate 18 and a plastic electric end plate 22.
The pipe end plate 20 has three holes 23 for a cold water inlet 24, hot water outlet 26 and a pressure relief valve 28.
Two electric heating elements 30 are located in the water chamber 14. Two thermostats 32 are located in the thermostat chamber 16. Each thermostat 32 has a temperature sensor 34 which extends into the water chamber 14 and is located adjacent or between one of the heating elements 30.
The element end plate 18 and the pipe end plate 20 each have two grooves, one for an O-ring 36 and one for a circumferentially extending crimp 38. The O-rings 36 seal the water chamber 14. The crimps 38 secure the tubular body 12 to the end plates 18 and 20.
An O-ring 40 is provided between the electric end plate 22 and the tubular body 12 to provide a seal against the ingress of water to the thermostat chamber 16.
The thermostat chamber 16 contains an electric terminal block 42. A cable gland 44 is secured to the electric end plate 22 so that electric wires (not shown) can pass through the cable gland 44 to the electric terminal block 42 and from there to the thermostats 32. The electric end plate 22 is removably secured to the tubular body 12 by screws (not shown).
In use, the heater 10 is mounted vertically with the pipe end plate 20 at the top. The thermostats 32 are set at 50°C. The two electric elements 30 have a combined power rating of 8 kW. With a cold water inlet temperature of 23°C and a flow rate of 3.5 litres per minute, the hot water outlet temperature is about 55°C. An addition to the illustrated embodiment is the use of a baffle (not shown) to direct the flow of fluid between the inlet 24 and the outlet 26. The baffle will be a flat plate that is inserted into the water chamber and located between the two elements 30. The baffle will extend to approximately 10mm-20mm away from the electric end plate and will direct the water from the inlet 24 down under the baffle and towards the outlet 26. This helps to efficiently heat the water in the water chamber.
It will be appreciated that many modifications or variations of the invention are possible without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. A liquid heater including a tubular body defining a liquid chamber and a thermostat chamber, the liquid chamber being located between an element end plate and a pipe end plate, and the thermostat chamber being located between the element end plate and an electric end plate, the pipe end plate having a liquid inlet, a liquid outlet, and a pressure relief valve, the liquid chamber containing at least one electric heating element, and the thermostat chamber containing at least one thermostat with a temperature sensor projecting through the element end plate into the liquid chamber.
2. A liquid heater according to claim 1 further including two electric heating elements located within the liquid chamber.
3. A liquid heater according to claim 2 further including two thermostats located in the thermostat chamber, with a temperature sensor of each thermostat being located adjacent a respective heating element.
4. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims further including seals provided between the tubular body and the pipe end plate.
5. A liquid heater according to claim 4 wherein the seals are O-rings.
6. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the tubular body is fixed to the pipe end plate and to the element end plate by being crimped to these end plates.
7. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the tubular body comprises a length of tubing or piping.
8. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims wherein a seal is also provided between the electric end plate and the tubular body.
9. A liquid heater according to claim 8 wherein the seal is an O-ring.
10. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the electric end plate is removably secured to the tubular body so that the electric end plate can be removed from the tubular body to access the thermostats and associated electric wiring within the thermostat chamber.
11. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the electric end plate is removably secured to the tubular body by at least one fastener extending through an aperture in the tubular body and into the electric end plate.
12. A liquid heater according to claim 11 wherein the fastener is a screw, bolt or the like.
13. A liquid heater according to any one of the preceding claims wherein an electric terminal block is located within the thermostat chamber.
