Abstract

An image acquisition and interpretation system in which textual and image-based data are extracted and processed from printed material in three dimensions. The inventive system allows the user to extract data from bound materials without handling or manipulating the documents in any physical manner. Applications of the present invention include the scanning, processing, and ad-hoc searching of ancient or fragile texts (books, scrolls, etc,), as well as legal and medical case files. As a result, the system user may manipulate, search, and hyperlink a physical document in a manner similar to an electronic document. In one embodiment of the inventive system, an x-ray source A is directed so that x-rays C pass through an object such as bound document E. An array of detectors B is disposed along a circular arc such that x-rays D that have passed through the volume E impinge upon the detectors B.
