Abstract

A device is provided for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of the knee joint, the device being of tubular form and having an opening in it for accommodating the patella of a knee when the device is being worn. The opening is encircled by a tube within which there is a length of resilient material for locating the patella, the length of resilient material being in the form of a loop extending inside the tube.

Description

A DEVICE FOR ALIGNING A PATELLA

FIELD OF THE INVENTION THIS INVENTION relates to a device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of the knee joint. Further, the invention relates to a method of preparing a device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of a knee joint for fitment to a patient.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of the knee joint, the device being of tubular form and having an opening in it for accommodating the patella of a knee when the device is being worn and the opening being encircled by a tube within which there is a length of resilient material for locating the patella, the length of resilient material being in the form of a loop extending inside the tube.

There may be two or more circumferentially spaced apertures in said tube to enable access to be had to said length of resilient material.

In the preferred form there are four equally spaced apertures. These apertures are preferably in the form of slits and they preferably extend radially. According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of preparing a device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of a knee joint for fitment to a patient, the device having an opening in it for accommodating the patella of a knee when the device is being worn and the opening being encircled by a tube within which there is a length of resilient material for supporting the patella, the length of resilient material being in the form of a loop extending inside the tube, and the method comprising cutting said tube to gain access to said length of material, pulling a part of said length out of the tube, and cutting said part off so that only a section of said tube has said resilient material therein.

In a preferred form there are two or more circumferentially spaced apertures cut in said tube to enable access to be had to said length of said resilient material. These apertures may be in the form of slits.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the inner face of a tubular device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of a knee joint; Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the inner face of the device; Figure 3 is a front elevation of the inner face of the device after a tubular support has been removed; Figure 4 is a sectional view on section line A-A of Figure 1 ; Figure 5 is a front elevation of the outer face of the device; Figure 6 is a rear elevation of the outer face of the device; and Figure 7 is a plan view of the device laid fiat.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS A device 10 for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of a knee joint is illustrated in Figures 1 to 7. The device 10 is formed by rolling a generally rectangular piece of neoprene base material 12 (Figure 7) into the form of a sleeve 14 and stitching the overlapping edges thereof. It may be understood that the device 10 may be made from elastic or any other non-rigid material as well as neoprene.

A slightly oval hole is cut in the base material 12 to receive a tube 16. The outer periphery of the tube 16 is sewn to the base material 12 around the periphery of the hole. Slits 18 are cut in that face of the tube 16 which is on the inside of the device 10 when worn. In the illustrated form there are four equally spaced, radially extending slits 18. It will be understood that these slits 18 that are cut in the tube 16 may be made wider than shown. It will further be understood that there may be holes or perforations cut in the face of the tube 16 which is on the inside of device 10 when worn, instead of the slits 18 being cut. These holes or perforations may be spaced in a similar way to the slits 18. Within the tube 16 there is a length of resiliency flexible foamed plastics material 20 which has a circular cross section. The length of material 20 is long enough to extend entirely around the tube 16 and thus form a complete loop. The material 20 may be reached through any one of the slits 18 and pulled out of the tube 16. It can then be cut to remove a section thereof from the tube 16. The remaining section of the material 20 is left in the tube 16.

As illustrated in Figure 3, approximately a quarter of the length of material 20 may be removed from the tube 16. It is, of course possible to remove half of the material 20 or three-quarters of the material 20, or any required size portion, from the tube 16, through one or more of the slits 18. Specifically, a part of the material 20 is drawn through one of the slits 18 and cut. Another part of the material 20 is then drawn through another slit 18 and cut. The portion of the material 20 which extends between the two slits 18 is then drawn out through one of the slits 18 and removed from the tube 16 so as to leave the required length of support material 20, in the tube 16. The length left will normally be in the shape of a horseshoe as illustrated in Figure 3.

The material 20 is used to align the patella of a knee joint of a person over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of the knee joint by providing the horseshoe shaped support around.-the- patella in either a lateral, medial, proximal or inverted position. The material 20 left in place applies a pressure to the patella at the required position to support an injured or damaged knee at the required place. The device 10, including this horseshoe shaped material 20, functions as a patella adjusting device that aligns the patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of the knee joint, in order to enhance the normal tracking of the patella. The position of the patella is corrected so that it is correctly aligned with the anterior articulatory surface of the femur and tibia of the knee joint.

As shown in Figures 5 and 6, device 10 further includes adjustment straps 22 at either end of sleeve 14 and on both the front and rear of device 10. These adjustment straps 22 are secured by hook and loop means such as is sold commercially under the registered Trade Mark "Velcro" and serve to allow for a snug fit around the leg of a person who is the wearer of the device 10. The sleeve 14 may alternatively be slightly tapered so that it has a wider opening at one end to allow for a snug fit around the leg of a person who is the wearer of the device 10.

If desired the device 10, when supplied to the doctor, may be devoid of slits 18. The doctor can then make slits or holes where he wishes.

Claims

CLAIMS:
1. A device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of the knee joint, the device being of tubular form and having an opening in it for accommodating the patella of a knee when the device is being worn and the opening being encircled by a tube within which there is a length of resilient material for locating the patella, the length of resilient material being in the form of a loop extending inside the tube.
2. The device as claimed in claim 1 , wherein there are two or more circumferentialiy spaced apertures in said tube to enable access to be had to said length of resilient material.
3. The device as claimed in claim 2, wherein there are four equally spaced apertures.
4. The device as claimed in claims 2 or 3, wherein the apertures are in the form of slits.
5. The device as claimed in claim 4, wherein the slits extend radially.
6. A method of preparing a device for aligning a patella over the articulating surface of the femur and the tibia on the anterior side of a knee joint for fitment to a patient, the device having an opening in it for accommodating the patella of a knee when the device is being worn and the opening being encircled by a tube within which there is a length of resilient material for supporting the patella, the length of resilient material being in the form of a loop extending inside the tube, and the method comprising cutting said tube to gain access to said length of material, pulling a part of said length out of the tube, and cutting said part off so that only a section of said tube has said resilient material therein.
7. The method as claimed in claim 6, wherein there are two or more circumferentially spaced apertures cut in said tube to enable access to be had to said length of said resilient material.
8. The method as claimed in claim 7, wherein the apertures are in the form of slits.
