Abstract

Means are provided for use in installing a toilet pedestal having a discharge pipe. Such means includes a pivot mounting (18, 19) which is located at the free end of the discharge pipe, a stop surface (21), which is also located at the free end of the discharge pipe, and a flap valve member (17) which is carried by the pivot mounting (18, 19). The flap valve member (17) is pivotable in a first direction between a closed position and an open position in which the flow of fluid out of the discharge pipe is permitted. Movement of the flap valve member (17) in a second direction (opposite to said first direction) out of the closed position is prevented by engagement of a part of the flap valve member (17) with the stop surface (21).

Description

TOILET INSTALLATIONS

Field of the Invention

This invention relates to toilet installations.

Typical toilet pedestals include a discharge pipe having a free end that fits into a larger diameter waste pipe, sealing means being provided between the toilet pedestal discharge pipe and the waste pipe.

Such arrangement normally operates satisfactorily but does not include any means for preventing reverse flow from the waste pipe into the toilet pedestal discharge pipe and thence into the pedestal bowl.

Such arrangement also does not include any means for preventing rodents passing from the waste pipe into the toilet pedestal discharge pipe and thence into the pedestal bowl. It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide an improved method of installing a toilet pedestal.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of improved means for use in installing a toilet pedestal.

Summary of the Invention

According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of installing a toilet pedestal having a discharge pipe, the method including providing a pivot mounting at the free end of the discharge pipe, providing a stop surface at the free end of the discharge pipe and mounting a flap valve member on the pivot mounting in such manner that the flap valve member is pivotable in a first direction between a closed position and an open position in which the flow of fluid out of the discharge pipe is permitted, movement of the flap valve member in a second direction (opposite to said first direction) out of the closed position being prevented by engagement of a part of the flap valve member with the stop surface.

According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided means for use in installing a toilet pedestal having a discharge pipe, said means including a pivot mounting which, in use, is located at the free end of the discharge pipe, a stop surface which is also located at the free end of the discharge pipe and a flap valve member which is carried by the pivot mounting in such manner that the flap valve member is pivotable in a first direction between a osed position and an open position in which the flow of fluid out of the discharge pipe is permitted, movement of the flap valve member in a second direction (opposite to said first direction) out of the closed position being prevented by engagement of a part of the flap valve member with the stop surface.

The pivot mounting and the stop surface may form part of a sleeve that is fitted onto the free end of the discharge pipe. However, the pivot mounting and the stop surface preferably form part of a fitting that is engaged resiliently with a sleeve that is fitted onto the free end of the discharge pipe. The sleeve preferably has a plurality of resilient projecting flanges for sealing engagement with the inner surface of a waste pipe.

Brief Description of the Drawings

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a valve assembly for fitment on a toilet pedestal discharge pipe, the valve member being shown in its closed position,

Figure 2 is an end view of the valve assembly, with the valve member shown in its open position,

Figure 3 is a sectional view of the valve assembly, with the valve member shown in its open position, and Figure 4 is a sectional view of the valve assembly, with the valve member shown in its closed position.

Description of the Preferred Embodiment

The valve assembly shown in the drawings includes a mounting sleeve 10 that, in use, is mounted on the free end of a toilet pedestal discharge pipe (not shown). The mounting sleeve 10 is formed of a resiliency deformable material and is fitted resiliently on the discharge pipe so that it grips the discharge pipe and remains in position on the discharge pipe. The discharge pipe fits inside a larger diameter waste pipe (also not shown) and sealing means is provided between the discharge pipe and the waste pipe. The sealing means takes the form of a series of resiliently deformable flanges 11 extending from a cylindrical main body portion 12 of the sleeve 10.

The cylindrical main body portion 12 of the sleeve 10 is connected by an integral joining section 13 to an increased diameter portion 14 of the sleeve 10.

A valve assembly 15, which includes a generally cylindrical portion 16 and a flap valve member 17, is connected to the sleeve 10 by fitment of the generally cylindrical portion 16 of the valve assembly 15 within the increased diameter portion 14 of the sleeve 10. The valve assembly 15 acts to prevent reverse flow from the waste pipe into the discharge pipe. The flap valve member 17 comprises a slightly domed circular plate and a pair of protuberances 18. The protuberances 18 are formed with aligned apertures and are pivotally connected to mounting formations 19 extending from the generally cylindrical portion 16 of the valve assembly 15. Two springs 20 are attached to the mounting formations 19 and the flap valve member 18 is acted upon by the two springs 20 so that it is biased into the closed position shown in Figure 1.

The generally cylindrical portion 16 of the valve assembly 15 has an inwardly directed lip 21 and, in the closed position, as shown in Figure 4, the periphery of the slightly domed circular plate of the flap valve member 17 is in sealing contact with the stop surface afforded by the inwardly projecting lip 21.

As can be seen from Figures 1 and 4, the flap valve member 17 is normally in a position in which it closes the associated end of the sleeve 10, thereby closing the free end of the discharge pipe. When, however, there is a flow of fluid along the discharge pipe, the flap valve member 17 will pivot about the axis of the aligned apertures in the protuberances 18 and the flow of fluid out of the discharge pipe will be permitted. Once the flow is discontinued, the flap valve member 17 will return to the position shown in Figures 1 and 4.

In the event that there is a flow along the waste pipe in the direction towards the pedestal discharge pipe, a pressure will be applied to the flap valve member 17 in a direction such as to tend to produce movement of the flap valve member 17 towards the stop surface afforded by the lip 21 of the generally cylindrical portion 16, i.e. pressing the periphery of the flap valve member 17 into sealing engagement with the lip 21 of generally cylindrical portion 16. The reverse flow of fluid into the discharge pipe will accordingly be prevented. In addition, the entry of rats or other vermin into the discharge pipe will be prevented. If, in addition, two toilet pedestals are mounted back-to-back, the flow of waste being discharged from one of the two pedestals will be prevented from flowing into the other pedestal.

Claims

Claims:-
1. A method of installing a toilet pedestal having a discharge pipe, the method including providing a pivot mounting at the free end of the discharge pipe, providing a stop surface at the free end of the discharge pipe and mounting a flap valve member on the pivot mounting in such manner that the flap valve member is pivotable in a first direction between a closed position and an open position in which the flow of fluid out of the discharge pipe is permitted, movement of the flap valve member in a second direction (opposite to said first direction) out of the closed position being prevented by engagement of a part of the flap valve member with the stop surface.
2. Means for use in installing a toilet pedestal having a discharge pipe, said means including a pivot mounting which is located at the free end of the discharge pipe, a stop surface which is also located at the free end of the discharge pipe and a flap valve member which is carried by the pivot mounting in such manner that the flap valve member is pivotable in a first direction between a closed position and an open position in which the flow of fluid out of the discharge pipe is permitted, movement of the flap valve member in a second direction (opposite to said first direction) out of the closed position being prevented by engagement of a part of the flap valve member with the stop surface.
3. The installation means claimed in Claim 2, in which the pivot mounting and the stop surface form part of a sleeve that, in use, is fitted onto the free end of the discharge pipe.
4. The installation means claimed in Claim 2, in which the pivot mounting and the stop surface form part of a fitting that is engaged resiliently with a sleeve that is fitted onto the free end of the discharge pipe.
5. The installation means claimed in Claim 3 or Claim 4, in which the sleeve has a plurality of resilient projecting flanges for sealing engagement with the inner surface of a waste pipe.
6. A method of preventing rodents from passing up the discharge pipe of a toilet pedestal, said method comprising fitting the installation means claimed in any one of Claims 2 to 5 to the discharge pipe.
