Abstract

To optimize the operation of a user program, such as for example a word processing system, the program is adapted to the user during operation. A characteristic value, (which is at least ternary and is as a rule a whole number that is rational or real), is created with the aid of a count or estimation of the number and/or an evaluation of the type of word characters and/or a key combination, or with the aid of an evaluation of how many different windows, split windows and logical symbols have been activated. A program function or a launch option for a program function is then modified, if the characteristic value exceeds or falls short of a specific threshold. According to the invention, several characteristic values can be created. The number of key strikes per minute and the number of different key combinations used are examples of characteristic values of this type. Conversely, the method also allows the user functions to be sabotaged.
