Abstract
A method for catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides, wherein a fuel is fed under a periodic rich/lean condition and burned, and an exhaust gas generated is contacted with a catalyst structure to catalytically reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas, characterized in that the catalyst structure comprises an inert substrate and, formed thereon, (A) a surface catalyst layer having a surface catalyst component such as ceria, (B) an intermediate catalyst layer having an intermediate catalyst component comprising a first catalyst component such as ceria and a second catalyst component comprising at least one selected from among rhodium, palladium and oxides thereof, and (C) an inner catalyst layer having an inner catalyst component comprising a carrier and at least one catalyst component selected from platinum, rhodium, palladium and oxides thereof.
