Abstract

The invention relates to a sealing arrangement in connection with sandwich elements (1, 2, 1a, 2a), said elements comprising an elastic core section (10, 11) of mineral wool and surface plates (16, 17) covering the same on either side, said surface plates having one lengthwise edge thereof provided with a tongue (4) and its opposite edge with a groove (3), whereby short sides (18-21) between the tongue-and-groove edges are straight. The tongue-and-groove edges (3, 4) are designed in such a way that, upon joining two boards (1, 2; 1a, 2a) together with a tongue-and-groove joint, the junction develops an outward-facing seam groove (9). The sealing arrangement comprises a masking strip (7), which covers a connecting joint (12) between the adjacent elements (1, 2; 1a, 2a) affixed to each other over said short straight sides thereof and which extends across said seam groove (9) so as toleave between the masking strip and the seam groove bottom a gap to be sealed. The sealing arrangement comprises a sealing member (5), which is substantially complementary to the cross-section of said gap and whichis integrated with a sheet-like bracket member (6), said bracket member being designed to be complementary to the tongue (4) for suspending the same upon the tongue. Upon fitting the groove of an adjacent element on top of the tongue, the bracket member clamps in place between the tongue and groove. The masking strip (7) covering the connecting joint (12) between the short sides (19-21) is settable in a sealing relationship against the previously set sealing member (5).

Description

Sealing arrangement

The present invention relates to a sealing arrangement in connection with sandwich elements, said elements comprising an elastic core section of mineral wool and surface panels covering the same on either side, said surface panels having one lengthwise edge thereof provided with a male tongue-and-groove and its opposite edge with a female tongue-and-groove, whereby short sides between the tongue-and-groove edges are straight, said tongue-and-groove edges being designed in such a way that, upon joining two boards together with a tongue-and-groove joint, the junction develops an outward-facing groove, said sealing arrangement comprising a masking strip, which covers a connecting joint between adjacent elements affixed to each other over said short straight sides thereof and which extends across said groove so as to leave between the masking strip and the groove bottom a gap to be sealed.

It is an object of the invention to provide a simple sealing solution in connection with such sandwich elements in which, upon joining elements to each other with a tongue-and-groove joint, the junction develops an outward-facing seam groove, the caulking of which, for example with various sealing compounds, would be laborious and would consume a fair amount of sealing material. In order to fulfill the object of the invention, the inventive arrangement is characterized in that the sealing arrangement comprises a sealing member, which is substantially complementary to the cross-section of said gap and which is integrated with a sheet-like bracket member, said bracket member being designed to be complementary to the tongue for suspending the same upon the tongue, whereby, upon fitting the groove of an adjacent element on top of the tongue, the bracket member clamps in place between the tongue and groove, and that the masking strip covering the connecting joint between the short sides is settable in a sealing relationship against the previously set sealing member. The sealing portion can be made of a soft plastic or rubber material and the bracket member of a harder plastics or for example a metal.

The invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Fig. 1 shows a junction between four sandwich elements in a schematic frontal view,

Fig. 2 shows the junction of fig. 1 in a schematic cross-section, and

Fig. 3 shows the junction of fig. 1 for sandwich elements in a plan view.

Reference numerals 1, 2, la and 2a indicate sandwich elements, comprising a core section of mineral wool and surface panels covering the same on either side. In fig. 2, the panel 1 has its core section designated with reference numeral 10 and the outer surface plate with reference numeral 15, and the panel 2 has its core section indicated with reference numeral 11 and the outer surface plate with reference numeral 16. In fig. 3, the panel 1 has its inner surface plate designated with reference numeral 17. Additionally in fig. 3, the panel la has its core section represented by reference numeral 10a and its surface panels with reference numerals 15a and 17a. The panels to be laid on top of each other are joined together with a tongue-and-groove joint, comprising, as shown in fig. 2, a tongue 4 provided along the top edge of the bottom panel 2 and a groove 3 provided along the bottom edge of the top panel 1, said tongue and groove being designed in this particular embodiment in such a way that, as the panels are in their superimposed position, the tongue-and-groove junction develops an outward-facing V- shaped seam groove 9, which is relative sizable as its depth is in the order of e.g. 10 mm and its width coplanar with the external panel surfaces is in the order of e.g. 20-30 mm. There are a plurality of other designs available for the seam groove 9, for example a cross-sectional quadratic or rectangular form, curvaceous or various aggregate forms. Over its short side 18-21 between the tongue-and-grooves provided respectively on its bottom edge and top edge, each panel is secured to a frame member, which in the exemplary embodiment of fig. 3 comprises an I-beam, the panel being affixed thereto e.g. by means of self-boring screws 14. Between the adjacent panels 1, la and, respectively, 2, 2a remains a connecting joint 12, which is filled with a layer of insulating wool preferably softer than the comparatively hard mineral wool making up the core section 10, 10a. In order to exclude moisture, this connecting joint 12 is covered with a masking strip 17, which is normally secured by means of mechanical fasteners, such as screws, rivets, to panel surfaces and sealed for example with a sealing compound or sealing tape. The masking strip 7 extends across the seam groove 9, resulting a gap at the groove 9, which may allow water to the connecting joint 12 with resulting moisture problems. In accordance with the invention, this is eliminated by covering said gap with a sealing pad 5 essentially complementary to the contour of the gap and mountable in a simple manner by using a bracket member 6 complementary to the shape of the tongue 4 without special pasting processes or mechanical fasteners. The bracket member 6 and the sealing pad 5 are made integral, for example by casting the sealing member 5 around the edge of the bracket member 6. The sealing member 5 is preferably composed of a soft plastic or rubber material and the bracket member 6 comprises for example some harder plastics or metal, or a composite material. Mounting of the sealing member 5 is performed simply by suspending the bracket member on top of the tongue of a properly installed lower construction element 2, whereafter, as the upper construction element 1 is installed in such a way that the groove present at its bottom edge sets on top of the tongue of the lower element, the bracket member 6 clamps itself in the gap between the tongue and grooves securely in position and then, after the wall is finished, the masking strip 7 is installed in a sealing relationship against the outer surface of the sealing member 5 to prevent access of water to the connecting joint 12. The inventive sealing has been experimentally found to provide a good tightness against rainfall and wind and, in terms of rainfall, it achieved a tightness value of 1350 Pa as determined according to standard EN-12865-A and, in terms of air tightness, it had a value of 700 Pa as determined according to standard SS-818126.

Claims
1. A sealing arrangement in connection with sandwich elements (1, 2, la, 2a), said elements comprising an elastic core section (10, 11) of mineral wool and surface panels (16, 17) covering the same on either side, said surface panels having one lengthwise edge thereof provided with a tongue (4) and its opposite edge with a groove (3), whereby short sides (18-21) between the tongue-and-groove edges are straight, said tongue-and-groove edges (3, 4) being designed in such a way that, upon joining two boards (1, 2; la, 2a) together with a tongue-and-groove joint, the junction develops an outward-facing seam groove (9), said sealing arrangement comprising a masking strip (7), which covers a connecting joint (12) between the adjacent elements (1, 2; la, 2a) affixed to each other over said short straight sides thereof and which extends across said groove (9) so as to leave between the masking strip and the seam groove bottom a gap to be sealed, characterized in that the sealing arrangement comprises a sealing member (5), which is substantially complementary to the cross-section of said gap and which is integrated with a sheet-like bracket member (6), said bracket member being designed to be complementary to the tongue (4) for suspending the same upon the tongue, whereby, upon fitting the groove of an adjacent element on top of the tongue, the bracket member clamps in place between the tongue and groove, and that the masking strip (7) covering the connecting joint (12) between the short sides (19-21) is settable in a sealing relationship against the previously set sealing member (5).
2. A sealing arrangement as set forth in claim 1, characterized in that the sealing member (5) consists of some elastic, relatively soft rubber or plastic material, and the bracket member (6) consists of some harder material.
