- the present invention relates generally to a display apparatus using a rear- view mirror of a car, and more particularly to a display apparatus using a rear-view mirror of a car, wherein in a normal mode a rear surface of the rear- view mirror positioned at the front top of the car is made to be darkened to allow the rear-view mirror to function as a reflective mirror, while during the output of image signals through a liquid crystal display board at the rear surface of the mirror the image signals are projected forward to be watched in the car, thereby allowing all the people in the car to watch images on the mirror by selecting an image display mode, a TV watching mode or a car navigation display mode using a remote controller.
- a driver In general, a driver must reach his destination and, thereafter, park his car in such a way as to go forward, turn to the right or left, or go rearward by operating the car while sitting on the driver's seat of the car.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a display apparatus using a rear-view mirror of a car, wherein in a normal mode a rear surface of the rear-view mirror positioned at the front top of the car is made to be darkened to allow the rear-view mirror to function as a reflective mirror, while during the output of image signals through a liquid crystal display board at the rear surface of the mirror the image signals are projected forward to be watched in the car, thereby allowing all the people in the car to watch images on the mirror by selecting an image display mode, a TV watching mode, or a car navigation display mode using a remote controller.
- another object of the present invention is to provide a display apparatus, in which when a driver watches a rear area through the rear-view mirror positioned in the front-top portion of a car with a Charge-Coupled Device (CCD) camera in a rearview mirror positioned at the rear side of the car, an image from the rearview mirror and an image from a rear-view CCD camera can be watched at the same time on the divided regions of the rear-view mirror, so that a driver can safely drive his car backward while perfectly watching the rear area.

- the present invention provides a display apparatus, wherein: in a normal mode a rear surface of the rear-view mirror positioned at the front top of the car is made to be darkened to allow the rear- view mirror to function as a reflective mirror, while during the output of image signals through a liquid crystal display board at the rear surface of the mirror the image signals are projected forward to be watched in the car; signals of images photographed by the CCD camera which is controlled by a camera drive unit are amplified by an amplification unit and are transmitted through a liquid crystal drive unit to an LCD board of the rear-view mirror to be watched by all in the car; the LCD board displays the image signals of a general liquid crystal television to allow TV watching in the car; a controller for controlling operations selects an image display mode, a television watching mode or a car navigation mode according to a user's selection by a mode selection switch; and the controller is provided with a receiving unit for a remote controller so that the user is able to select functions of a mode change, a channel up/down and
- the user can observe the area just behind the car through a convex mirror of the stern mirror on a whole surface or a partial surface of the rear-view mirror; image signals, which are photographed by the rear-view CCD camera while the camera drive unit is controlling the camera, are transmitted to the LCD board in the rear-view mirror through the liquid crystal drive unit to be displayed.

- the rear-view mirror 1 normally functions as the reflective mirror 4 with its rear surface darkened, so the rear view can be watched on a whole surface of the reflective mirror 4.
- images are displayed on the LCD board 2
- an image can be watched through one part 4a of the reflective mirror 4 and, at the same time, a reflected rear view can be watched on the other part of the reflective mirror 4.
- Fig. 2 is a block diagram showing an entire configuration of a display apparatus of the present invention.
- a rear-view CCD camera 5 for photographing a dead ground behind the car is positioned at the back of the car, and the CCD camera 5 performs photographing by a control signal through a camera drive unit 6.
- Signals of photographed images obtained by the CCD camera 5 operated by the camera drive unit 6 are amplified in an amplification unit 7 to compensate its loss during transmission.
- a liquid crystal drive unit 8 receiving the image signal amplified by the above amplifying unit 7 processes the signal and displays its image on the LCD board 2 in the rear-view mirror 1 , so the driver can watch the image.
- a controller 12 to which a selected particular through a switch input unit
- a remote control receiving unit 10 receiving wireless signals from a remote controller is inputted, controls operations of the camera drive unit 6 and the liquid crystal drive unit 8, so the driver's observation of the rear area is possible.
- the controller recognizing this selection outputs a control signal to a tuner 13, where TV broadcasting signals on a selected channel among television broadcast signals through an antenna 14 are selected and sent to the liquid crystal TV signal processing unit 15, so that the image is displayed through the LCD board 2 and at the same time voice can be heard by a speaker 17 through a voice amplifying unit 16.
- the controller 12 recognizing this selection displays, on the LCD board 2, an image of a map showing a route to a destination which is read from map data in a car navigation system 18, so that all the people in the car can watch the image.
- a general hands-free signal processing unit 19 is provided in the rear-view mirror 1, so image signals are displayed on the LCD board 2, the driver's voice is inputted through a microphone 20, and the other side's voice is outputted through a speaker 17. Accordingly, the telephone conversation is possible while a user watches an image transmitted from a video telephone on the LCD board 2.
- the LCD board 2 and the board 3 are formed in the rear-view mirror 1 and the reflective mirror 4 is combined with the LCD board 2 and the board. Accordingly, in a normal driving mode, the rear-view mirror 1 functions as the reflective mirror 4 with its rear surface darkened, and the rear view can be watched through a whole surface of the reflective mirror 4.
- the controller 12 recognizing the selection outputs a control signal to the camera drive unit 6 so as to allow the CCD camera 5 to photograph a rear area.
- Signals of images photographed by the CCD camera 5 are amplified by the amplification unit 7 whereby signal loss during transmission is compensated, and then the amplified signals are sent to the liquid crystal drive unit 8 to be displayed as images on the LCD board 2 in the rear-view mirror, so that the images can be watched through the reflective mirror 4 of the rear-view mirror 1.

- the CCD camera 5 is positioned in the stern mirror 22 and the rear-view mirror also has the LCD board 2, the board 3 and the reflective mirror 4, so that in a normal mode the rear-view mirror functions as a reflective mirror 4 with its rear surface darkened, and the rear view can be watched through a whole surface of the reflective mirror 4.
- the controller 12 recognizing the selection outputs a control signal to the camera drive unit 6 to make the CCD camera 5 in the stern mirror 22 to photograph the area.

- the area just behind the car 21, which is reflected through the convex mirror 23 of the stern mirror 22, can be watched. If the car moves rearward while the CCD camera 5 is not operated, the area image which is reflected by the stern mirror 22 can be watched through the whole reflective mirror 4 of the rear-view mirror 1.
- a rear surface of a rear-view mirror positioned in the front-top of a car is made dark so that the rear-view mirror normally functions as a reflective mirror, while during the output of image signals through an LCD board at the rear surface of the mirror, the image signals are projected forward to be displayed.
- the signals of images photographed by the CCD camera which is controlled by a camera drive unit are amplified by an amplification unit, and are transmitted through a liquid crystal drive unit to an LCD board in the rear-view mirror to be displayed.
- the LCD board displays image signals for a general liquid crystal television so that television watching is possible in the car.
- a controller for controlling operations is adapted to select an image display mode, a television watching mode or a car navigation mode according to a user's selection by a mode selection switch.
- the controller is provided with a receiving unit for a remote controller so that the user is able to select functions of a mode change, a channel up/down and a volume up/down, etc. by the remote controller.
