Description

EMI/RFI SHIELDING DEVICE FOR ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Field of the Invention The invention relates in general to a shielding device with electromagnetic interference / radio frequency interference (EMI/RFI) properties. More particularly, this invention relates to a shielding device that prevents a direct exposure of a human body to an electromagnetic field emanating from a wireless product. Description of the Related Art As the wireless products such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants, pagers, hand held devices and laptop computers become more and more commonly used, there is a great demand in quality of signal transmitting and receiving. To establish a well communication for these kinds of wireless products, a clear and continuous signal in a form of strong radiation is required. Ideally, taking the cellular phones as an example, when a signal is received or transmitted, the radio frequency is transmitted / received (transceived) via the antenna only. However, the current techniques cannot provide or fabricate a wireless product that transceives a signal without leaking the radiation from the body. That is, when the antenna of a wireless product is transmitting or receiving a radio frequency, the body of the wireless product is inevitably to leak radiation.
This kind of radiation is harmful to human body especially when the wireless product is close to the human body. Among these wireless products, the cellular phone is often held next to the human brain while being used. The leakage of radiation from the body of the cellular phone thus seriously endangers the healthy of the users. In addition to the body of the cellular phone, products such as the laptop computer or other device may also leak the radiation through the keyboard, monitor, windows, buttons, connectors and wire attachments such as hands free kits.
A great concern in eliminating the radiation damage to human body has been evoked in recent years. Accessories for cellular telephones or higher frequency band transceivers that provide some protection to the users have been developed recently. However, for a closed-form design, only the radiation emanating from a portion of the electronic equipment can be shielded. Furthermore, it is difficult to shield the radiation without degrading the signal transmission or receiving quality.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The invention provides an EMI/RFI shielding device that prevents the radiation emanating from both the antenna and the body of an electronic device. Being deflected or absorbed by the shielding device, the radiation leaking from the body of the electronic device is transferred into heat or other form to be dissipated. In addition, the radiation emanating from the antenna of the electronic device is interfered or blocked by the shielding device to prevent a direct exposure of the radiation to the human body. The EMI/RFI shielding device comprises a first portion that wraps a body of the electronic device to prevent from establishing a direct contact, or a direct exposure of the radiation leaking from the body of the electronic device to a human body. The EMI/RFI shielding device comprises a foldable second portion extending from the first portion. The second portion can be folded to cover the keyboard and the display of the electronic device, so that the radiation leakage from the keyboard or the display is blocked from propagating to the human body. The EMI/RFI shielding device further comprises a third portion that extends from the first and second portions to block the radiation emanating from the antenna. Thus constructed, the radiation emanating from the antenna and the radiation leaking from the body of electronic device can be blocked, and a direct exposure of this kind of harmful radiation to the human body is prevented.
Both the foregoing general description and the following detailed description are exemplary and explanatory only and are not restrictive of the invention, as claimed.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 shows a front view of an EMI/RFI shielding device for electronic device according to the invention; and
Figures 2 shows a rear view of the EMI/RFI shielding cover as shown in Figure 1.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS As mention above, the electronic devices, especially those wireless products such as cellular phones, personal digital assistants, pagers, hand held devices and laptop computers have a great demand in signal transmitting and receiving quality. Therefore, to provide a good communication between the electronic devices, the signal transmission tower, or the gateway infrastructure arrangement, the electromagnetic field and microwave radiation generated by the transmission signal is harmful to human body. The radiation is typically transmitted or received from an antenna of the electronic device. Therefore, by disposing the antenna to a proximity of a human body can cause serious harm to the human body or the user. In addition to radiation emanating from the antenna, it is inevitably that the body of the electronic device also has leakage of radiation. For example, when a user is holding a hand set on his/her hand and disposing the ear piece near his/her ear, there is always some radiation emanating from the ear piece or the hand set to harm the user. Therefore, the invention provides an EMI/RFI shielding cover that can protect the user from being hurt from the radiation with a frequency from about 700 MHz to about 100 GHz emanating from everywhere of the electronic device.
In this embodiment, an EMI/RFI shielding cover for a cellular phone is illustrated in Figure 1 and Figure 2 as an example. It is appreciated that the shape of the EMI/RFI shielding depends on the exact shape of the electronic device that includes a wireless product such as a cellular phone, a Personal digital assistant, a pager, a hand held device and a laptop computer.
As shown in Figure 1, an EMI/RFI shielding device is provided for a cellular phone. The EMI/RFI shielding device comprises a body shielding cover 101 to wrap the body of the cellular phone, so that a direct contact between the body of the cellular phone is avoided. The material of the body shielding cover 101 comprises conductive polymer that deflects and absorbed the radiation emanating from the body of the cellular phone. Being deflected, the radiation is thus diverted into another direction without propagating towards to the human body. Being absorbed by the body shielding cover 101, the radiation is converted into heat to be dissipated away. The shielding cover 101 comprises a transparent portion 101a on the display and the keyboard to enable the user to dial the number or to read the message from the display easily. Ideally, the material of the transparent portion 101a also has the properties to deflect or absorb the radiation emanating from the body of the cellular phone. In addition to the shielding cover 101 that wraps the body of the cellular phone, a key board and display shield 102 extends from a rear side of
the body shielding cover 101. The key board and display shield 102 is foldable or removable to completely cover the key board and the display. When the protection provided by the transparent part 101a of the body shielding cover 101 is not sufficient to protect the user, after reading the message or dialing, the key board and display shield 102 can be folded to cover the key board and
the display. As a result, even the transparent part does not have enough protection from the
radiation, the radiation emanating from the key board and the display can also be effected blocked
by the key board display shield 102.
In Figure 1 , the shielding device further comprises an antenna shield 103 extending from the
body shielding cover 101 from a side of the earpiece. Referring to Figure 2, the antenna shield 103
covers a range that the radiation emanating from the antenna 104 may directly propagate towards the
human body. Being blocked by the antenna shield 103, all the radiation emanating from the antenna
104 is deflected away.
The materials of the key board and display shield 102 and the antenna shield 103 are the same
as that of the body shielding cover 101. Thus constructed, not only the radiation emanating from the
antenna of an electronic device can be blocked, deflected from a human body, but also the radiation
leaking from a body of the electronic device can be deflected or absorbed without causing any health
concern for the human body.
Other embodiments of the invention will appear to those skilled in the art from consideration
of the specification and practice of the invention disclosed herein. It is intended that the
specification and examples to be considered as exemplary only, with a true scope and spirit of the
invention being indicated by the following claims.
