The inventive method for producing synthesis gas consists in a partial oxidation of hydrocarbon raw material by an oxidising agent in a compression type internal combustion engine with an excess oxidant ratio less than 0.8. In order to activate the process, partial oxidation initiators in a quantity less than 10 % of the hydrocarbon raw material are supplied to the piston-swept volume of the internal combustion engine. The compression ratio for the compression type internal combustion engine is chosen and/or adjusted from 13 to 30.
