Abstract

A diffractive optic multiplexer/demultiplexer for telecommunications is disclosed. The diffractive optic provides wavelength multiplexing/demultiplexing. The diffractive optic is located off-axis to at least one source of diverging coherent electromagnetic energy, wherein the diffractive optic is configured to collimate the diverging coherent electromagnetic energy along a communication axis. The diffractive optic can be bi-directional, thereby providing multiplexing for the diverging beams intersecting the diffractive optic an demultiplexing for intersecting multiplexed collimated communication beams.
