Description

DESCRIPTION A Search Engine Digital Magazine For Performing Structured Searches

Online and Offline By Enzo Stancato

TECHNICAL FIELD

My invention relates to a portable magnetic media search engine, more specifically, how the search engine works with a computer to streamline the search process of a user prior to going online to make a purchase. My invention allows the user to view an advertisers products or services through real-time video prior to making a decision of visiting an advertisers web site, thereby reducing the amount of time the user is on the web. Should a user decide to visit a web address of an advertiser, the preprogrammed search engine would facilitate this by recalling the hyperlink address from the portable magnetic media, while the user is viewing the advertisers presentation offline, and then dialing the address when the user selects this option.

BACKGROUND ART

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS This application claims benefit of U.S. provisional application numbers 60/211,699, filed June 15, 2000 and 60/248, 268, filed on November 15, 2000.

DISCLOSURE OF THE INVENTION

The present invention is a portable magnetic media search engine having a plurality of menus that are user selectable so that the user can choose one or more subject matters of interest. Included within the menu choices are one or more hyperlink addresses to the internet, the world wide computer information network.

In accordance with the present invention, I provide a search engine digital magazine which is loaded onto a portable magnetic media that allows a user to conduct a structured search for products online/offline, where said digital magazine further allows a sponsor of said products to showcase their products through real-time video or through other means of advertisement offline, said digital magazine comprises: a portable magnetic media which is inserted into a computer; a means for selecting from a main menu of an interface browser a product or service from said magnetic media, which will take a user to a secondary menu, in which said secondary menu automatically scrolls a list of general sponsors' banners or logos that provide said product or service; a means for selecting a sponsor of said product or service from the secondary menu, which will play a theme of said sponsor's products or services; a means for reselecting said sponsor, should the user choose to visit said sponsor's online address, that will instruct said user's computer to communicate with a gateway page of a controller' s server, said controller will direct the user' s computer to said sponsor' s select e-comπverce segment of said sponsors website on the internet; and a means for instructing the user's computer to return to said portable magnetic media once the sponsor's page is closed or the return button is hit. The secondary menu may further be controlled by the placement of a mouse relative to said scrolling secondary menu and when a sponsor is selected from said secondary menu, the computer will recall from said magnetic media a hyperlink internet address for said sponsor and will further connect to said sponsor' s internet web page so that the connection will appear to be immediate to said user should said user decide to view the sponsor's web pages. Normally, the means for selecting the above processes will be a mouse, a button, a keyboard, a touch screen, or any other similar device .

A point of novelty in my present invention is that the search engine can be distributed on a Portable magnetic media Disc or other high density media for storing digital information, and that the search engine can work online/offline, for example, when conducting an offline search, a user can key in a search expression in a search window and the electronic search engine will contact the internet looking for the expression being searched, while at the same time allowing a user to search the portable magnetic media offline. In use, e.g., using the Portable magnetic media as the magnetic media for distribution, the Portable magnetic media can be widely distributed either generally or to selected audiences. In this manner selected audiences can be targeted to receive (or be on the distribution list) the search engine. This becomes very attractive to advertisers/sponsors who desire to communicate and advertise their products and services to broad groups of audiences or to a specific audience. The advertiser can provide content directly on the distributed magnetic media, on the advertiser's menu portion, for the viewer/user. This content can be directed to a specific product or products. The content can include detailed information about the product that the advertiser desires to promote. When the viewer desires additional information, the advertiser can provide a hyperlink address directly to its site on the internet. This address can be directed to locations on the advertiser's internet web site, so that the user avoids having to enter the front door of the advertiser's web site. Therefore, the user is able to get to the information much quicker without either having to surf the internet, review the whole web site, or make endless choices on the advertiser's web site to get to the desired information. In addition the advertiser can provide, in the Portable magnetic media storage, additional hidden data that would normally be transferred from the web site to the user's computer in order for the user to view the specific information quicker, to provide information not available to others or to provide information related to the distributed Portable magnetic media. As set forth below, the link between the viewer/user to the sponsor's web site may also be through a web site linked to the Portable magnetic media distributor. In this manner the said distributor may derive benefits based on a user's activities with the sponsors.

BEST MODE OF CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION

The present invention is the first global on-line magazine with interactive capabilities from the Portable magnetic media to any web site or any other online directory in the world. Once a user is a member at the Controller's web site, the user will have access to review the latest selection of Fashion, Cosmetics, Magazines, Movies, Music, Automobiles, Current Events and any other sites of interest on a monthly basis. Because of interactive capabilities of the present invention with other company product web sites, the user will no longer have to spend endless hours of confusion trying to locate items and desired information on the internet as with traditional search engines.

A portable magnetic media, e.g. a CD, is inserted into the Portable magnetic media drive of the user. It is opened manually or automatically when the CD is inserted into the computer. The Portable magnetic media program presents users with a main menu of an interface browser displaying main areas that can be accessed by clicking on any one of the selections, and the user is directed to a page displayed on the user's computer based on content within the Portable magnetic media containing certain themed contents.

On these sub pages (menus) the content showcases different products from various sponsors/advertisers using their provided promotional material. This promotional material of their product may include real-time video complete with audio and any other advertising promotions provided by the sponsors. This promotional content is stored for distribution on the Portable magnetic media. This content therefore will occupy a large amount of space and would take a long time to download on the internet. This content may include video, multi-media content typically seen on T.V. and not the internet because of the long transmission time. The present invention offers these capabilities since the content on CD disc is easily stored and has a fast access speed. By clicking a second time on any of these Sponsor's logos, the user will be directed to a gateway page on the internet. This gateway page is on a Controller's server, preferably at the Controller's site. The controller would preferably be the distributor of the Portable magnetic media or the licensor of the distributor of the Portable magnetic media.

The user is then directed to the Sponsor's site on the internet, but the Controller still maintains a banner at the top, offering various options to the user. The user may return to the user's portable magnetic media's interface browser by closing the sponsor's online website. The user may also log this site as its favorite site. All the navigation within the web sponsor's page continues normally up to the moment of the purchase. At that time, the user is redirected to complete the purchase through the Controller's specialized E-Commerce web site.

The user becomes a member and is required to fill out a more extensive form pertaining to their credit card and shipping information. All this information will be added to the users account in the controller's database, which can be accessed at a later date, to refer to shipping status, order update, and other information. This gathering process will allow the controller to store all the information gathered from the user, thereby making the user' s future purchases through the portable magnetic media's interface browser more efficient, while at the same time providing the user the ■ security that the user' s financial and personal data will not be violated by third parties. The present invention is used in the following manner. At sign on, the CD ROM, distributed generally by mail or other mass distribution means to targeted or general recipients, is inserted into the computer 10 or other machine. As shown in Fig. 1, an interface browser 12 displays a first level index 14 (in the form of a scrolling screen) of broad general subjects. A subject is selected by the user and a pointer controlled by a mouse attached to the machine or computer 10 is directed to the general subject area as is well known in the art, a click is made on the highlighted subject matter from the first level index 1 (in the form of a scrolling screen) . As shown in Fig. 1, e.g. the first level index 14 has an icon named "Autos," this icon is first selected. Referring to Fig. 2, the screen changes to a second level scrolling screen 16 on one side and a video preview window 18 on the other side. Additional areas are left open within the overall window screen to move back to a previous index, portions available for advertising, and to hyperlink to an internet location or other location indexed within the CD ROM related to the displayed video or subject matters in the second level index that is part of the second level scrolling screen.

In Fig 2, the first level index subject matter was autos . As shown in Fig. 2, the scrolling screen 16, which is the second level index, displays in icon form, information for the first level index subject matter, e.g., automobile manufacturers, or automobile dealerships, or any other information, displayed in this second level index, relating to the first level subject matter. As shown in Fig. 2, a video preview window 18 displays generally in video including flash video or streaming video or real video or 3D video, video information to the user. Initially, this video portion may be commercial advertising which the viewer/user is shown while the second level index is scrolling. The user can then select, for example, a manufacturer from the second level scrolling index, e.g., "A". As shown in Fig. 2, the "A" second level index subject matter has been chosen and the video viewing screen 18 will display information about "A" products as shown in Fig. 3., as well as creating an "A" hyperlink icon 20 below the video viewing screen 18. While the viewer is watching information on the video window screen of "A" products, the second level index continues to scroll continuously. It also repeats of the second level entry subject matters related to the first level entry subject matter continuously.

It is well known, that in situations where a user is surfing or shopping, the user may not want to continue to watch the entire video portion of the previous selected item. Therefore while the viewer is watching the then selected item, the viewer/user can also, if desired, select a new second level subject matter, e.g., another manufacturer "B". This will call the system (computer) to load the information regarding "B" from the stored information on CD ROM or at other location available where the information is available to display it in the video portion. Likewise, in that situation the lower right hand portion of Fig. 3, more specifically, a hyperlink icon 16 would change from "A" to "B". Unique in this system is the second level scrolling using icons which relate to a manufacturer or selected subject matter on a second level index, e.g., trademark design, preferably in the form of an icon that is well known by a user. Subject matters by word or other indicia, of course, can also be listed on the second level index.

Previously and preferably, the above process and interaction uses information stored on the CD ROM obtained as previously described by the user. Fig. 4, the hyperlink function between the CD 32 and the internet begins by clicking on the "A" hyperlink icon 36 or on the click instructions, and this in turn will cause the systems (computer or machine) 34 to hyperlink first the controller's server 38 and then to the sponsors internet location 40 or to any other online search directory. Thereby, the hyperlink may take the user's computer to "A's" web page or any other web page that would provide the user with additional information about the second level selected subject matter. Thereafter, additional information can be obtained from the user, e.g., zip code, where the zip code would provide the user with a list of available dealers of said sponsors in the user's zip code area.

Unique in the present system is that the hyperlink address is stored and available to the system either on the CD ROM or at the system's internet location. Generally, while the user is selecting the second level subject matter, the system is entering preliminary information to immediately contact or has already contacted the selected second level hyperlink internet address which is held in a buffer to be ready to be loaded or displayed if and when the user actually makes the request. In the event the user does not make the request then the expected hyperlink pre loaded address location would not be displayed. This pre-loading activity is transparent to the user. It allows the system to appear much quicker in loading hyperlinked information to the user.

The automatic scrolling portion of the present invention used on the first and second level indexes, as discussed herein, and other index levels if necessary, provides for a scrolling index that will scroll relative to the placement of the pointer of the mouse in relationship to the border of the window containing the scrolling index or in relationship of the location of the pointer within the window. For example, the index will scroll in the direction of a border where that pointer is closest to that border. If the pointer is above the midpoint of the screen and closer to the top border containing the index, then the index will scroll upward to the top border. If the pointer is moved below the midpoint and toward the lower border of the index window, then the screen will move in the downward direction. It is also possible, similarly as described, for the scrolling indexes to move left and right relative to a side border. In addition, the speed of the scrolling varies proportionately to the location of the pointer, such that the closer of the pointer is to the border, the faster the scrolling. In other words, as the pointer is closer to a border, the speed of the scrolling index is increased. In another embodiment of the invention, As shown in Fig. 1, said interface browser will have a window 22 for typing a search criteria and once said search criteria has been initialized said search criteria will instruct said user' s computer to communicate with a gateway page on controller's server, while the user's computer is communicating with the controller' s server online and performing the search requested, said user is able to conduct offline searches on the portable magnetic media, upon the online search being completed, said interface browser will open a window reporting what was found during the search, once said user has terminated his search, the user will close the search window and the portable magnetic media interface browser will be enabled to perform more offline searches.

Though not previously discussed herein, a first level subject matter can be movies. The second level scrolling index can be actual current movies and it is anticipated that a user can enter a zip code and a list of movie theaters and starting times will be displayed for the user. Thereafter a list of local movie theaters and starting times will be displayed. This information can be obtained from the CD ROM or from a hyperlink location of local movie information. Thereafter, the user can purchase tickets online. Each ticket would identify the theater, the location, and the auditorium, as well as the number of people per ticket, along with the date and the movie start time. Of particular interest, on the right hand side of each said ticket is barcode information. The barcode information contains validation information to be read and confirmed at the movie theater where a scanning device will be used. This will allow the movie theater or other vendor to validate the purchase of the ticket and allow the theater to collect its fee for the ticket. The user having purchased the ticket online through credit card or other consideration transfer means. The tickets will print on the user's printer preferably in color though not necessarily so. This system can be used for movies, sporting events, and other entertainment functions . In addition, many items can be selected by a user utilizing the present invention, e.g., the selection of models. The models may be selected by certain criteria, e.g., the zip code, but criteria relating to selection of models, e.g., male/female, color of eyes, height, weight, etc., or other subject matter criteria. The models can be viewed and additional information can be obtained by hyperlink to each model as to their rates, fees and availability, this would be available by hyperlink on the internet and run by the system for the user, but as defined and controlled by the system or the model.

In summary, the present invention using, for example, magazines, provide for the user at the second level a subject selection, e.g., Magazines. Then, once a magazine is selected on the second level, a video clip is provided about the current issue information on the particular magazine and/or its cover so that the user can view portions of the contents of that issue, viewing inside pages of that issue. The user can then continue to view the magazine by way of hyperlink address at some cost, or can subscribe to the magazine at that time. The present system is unique in that the user can have access to many magazine presentations without having to go online. One of the unique features of this invention is that once the user has found the magazine presentation that he wants to view, the user does not have to wait to download the presentation from the web, yet is given the ability to go online instantly and the ability to view other sponsor' s banners and logos while viewing the presentation due to the unique concept of the automatic secondary scrolling screen.

The information on each current magazine would be contained in the CD ROM that had been distributed, or can be obtained from a hyperlink address for that magazine that is programmed in the CD ROM. It is envisioned that the magazines or other first level subject matters will be organized in a certain fashion for magazines by Title, Publisher, Subject Matter, and will show the best part of each magazine or movie, etc. The best part may include the actors or cars and may be including information prior to the actual magazine being released. The CD ROM of the present invention provides a method of delivering content of a magazine or other first level subject matter without having to first link to a web page. This provides quicker information when users may not be able to hyperlink at all, e.g., when using the CD ROM on an airplane.

When the CD ROM is used in connection with a machine having access to the internet, when the user is loading the second level index, the system can be pre-loading hyperlink information to increase throughput and reduce connect time to pre-load the hyperlink address in the hyperlinked location to provide additional information to the user, on the selected subject if they want it. If the user before asking for that information to be displayed chooses another subject then the system would begin pre-loading that hyperlink address to be prepared in the event the user wants to see that information.

The Portable magnetic media, in addition to being an online interactive magazine, also contains great value, such as providing top music hits from various music artists and top new music artists, tips how to be a model, tips for make-up, as well as many contests, sweepstake prizes, and other sorts of news media.

The many novel advantages of the present invention include: One of the most informative and advanced magazines on-line where you can read and view a user's favorites sites at the same time. Easy navigation and direct link to a variety of demographically attractive products and markets all in one site by a simple click of a button.
