Abstract

The invention concerns a method wherein respective gain factors of successive coaxial layers of an optical fibre are adjusted as to achieve the desired power distribution among the various light fluxes which are propagated in said fibre. Said fluxes can be constituted by signal carrier waves whereof the levels should be balanced in a wavelength multiplexed system. They can also be constituted by a pump wave in an amplification shifted system and by a Raman wave generated by said pump wave and which must be eliminated. The gain factor of a layer is positive, negative or null depending on whether said layer amplifies, absorbs or simply transmits said waves. One flat gain amplifying fibre can in particular comprise a high index amplifying core (2), a low index internal cladding (3), a high index absorbing ring (4), and a low index external cladding (5). The invention is applicable in particular to transoceanic transmissions.
