Abstract

A transformation process is carried out in which the competence of a plant or animal cell is increased and/or induced by placing the cell in reduced gravity, and then the cell is transformed in reduced gravity. A transformation process is carried out in which a monocot plant cell is transformed in reduced gravity. In a process of increasing the frequency of transformation of cells, the cells are contacted with a chemical agent effective to increase the frequency of transformation of the cells, and then the cells are transformed in reduced gravity. In a process of providing an increased amount of transgenic gene product produced, a cell is provided having a gene which has been transformed into the cell by a transformation process. Then, gene product is produced from the gene in reduced gravity. A product is provided relating to a plant or animal cell having DNA transferred into the cell in reduced gravity. A cell has a chemical pathway enhanced by a gene product produced in reduced gravity from a gene transferred into the cell in either reduced gravity or atmospheric gravity. The transferred gene produces an increased amount of product or an altered product compared to the same gene product produced in atmospheric gravity.
