Abstract

The present invention seeks to provide an articulated support system (10) for holding a handwriting input device (14, 76, 84) in a predetermined position for use in a vehicle such that a driver may safely operate the input device (14, 76, 84) without taking his or her hands off the steering wheel (72) or gearshift (12).

Description

TOUCHPAD HOLDER FOR GEAR SHIFT

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to articulated support apparatus in general, and more particularly to an articulated support system for holding a handwriting input device in a predetermined position for safe use in a vehicle.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Touchpad input devices for accepting handwriting input via the fingertip are known in the art. Japanese Patent Application No. 7195962, herein referred to as the '962 application, describes a handwriting input device for use in a vehicle. The handwriting input device described is positioned in an arm rest of a door, where fingertip input operations are performed while fixing the elbow or wrist on the arm rest. The '962 application claims that the invention described therein performs reliable input operation even when there is vibration due to movement of vehicle, reduces distortion of characters, words, or symbols that are input, and improves efficiency and stability of operation. However, in order to operate the device described in the '962 application while driving a vehicle, a driver would need to take his or her hand off of either the steering wheel or the gear shift, potentially endangering the driver's safety.

The present invention seeks to provide an articulated support system for holding a handwriting input device in a predetermined position for use in a vehicle such that a driver may safely operate the input device without taking his or her hands off of the steering wheel or gearshift.

There is thus provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention support apparatus assembled with a gear shift in an automobile.

There is also provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention articulated support apparatus including a first joint member, a mount pivotably connectable to the first joint member, a second joint member connectable to the first joint member, and a clamp assembly pivotably connectable to the second joint member and adapted to be secured to a gear shift. Further in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention the apparatus further includes a connecting screw connecting the first and second joint members and the first joint member is threadingly rotatable about the connecting screw.

Still further in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention the apparatus further includes an oppositely threaded connecting screw connecting the first and second joint members.

Additionally in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention the apparatus further includes a handwriting input device attached to the mount and the mount and any of the joint members are cooperatively positionabie thereby presenting the handwriting input device for input by a hand while the hand is in contact with the gear shift.

There is also provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention articulated support apparatus including a gear shift, a first joint member, a mount pivotably connectable to the first joint member, a handwriting input device attached to the mount, a second joint member connectable to the first joint member, and a clamp assembly pivotably connectable to the second joint member and adapted to be secured to the gear shift, the mount and any of the joint members are cooperatively positionabie thereby presenting the handwriting input device for input by a hand while the hand is in contact with the gear shift.

There is also provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention a handwriting input device assembled with a steering wheel in an automobile. There is also provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention a handwriting input device assembled with a gear shift in an automobile.

There is also provided in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention a handwriting input device assembled with an ashtray in an automobile.

Fig. 4 is a simplified pictorial illustration of an automobile steering wheel with integrated handwriting input device, constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention; and

Fig. 5 is a simplified pictorial illustration of an automobile ash tray with integrated handwriting input device, constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENT INVENTION

Reference is now made to Fig. 1 which is a perspective operational view of an articulated support system constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. The articulated support system of Fig. 1 preferably includes articulated support apparatus, generally designated 10, assembled with a vehicle gear shift 12. A handwriting input device 14, such as any touchpad or digitizer tablet known in the art, is fixedly or removably attached to apparatus 10. Typical operation of the system of Fig. 1 is illustrated by a hand 16 shown resting upon gear shift 12 while a finger 18 of hand 16 is shown simultaneously providing tactile input to device 14. The system of Fig. 1 may optionally include one or more push buttons 20 shown attached to gear shift 12 and being contacted by a finger 22 of hand 16.

Additional reference is now made to Fig. 2A, which is a perspective view of the articulated support system of Fig. 1 , Fig. 2B, which is a perspective cross-sectional view of the articulated support system of Fig. 1 , and Fig. 2C, which is a bottom cross-sectional view of the articulated support system of Fig. 1 as seen from the perspective from an arrow II in Fig. 2A. Apparatus 10 preferably comprises a mount 24 to which device 14 is attached, a joint member 26 attached to mount 24 by a pivot rod 28, a joint member 30 attached to a clamp assembly 32 by a pivot rod 34, a connecting screw 36 connecting joint members 26 and 30, locking nuts 38 and 40, and pivot levers 42 and 44 connected to pivot rods 28 and 34 respectively.

In one embodiment pivot rod 28 is preferably integrally formed with or fixedly or removably attached to mount 24 and completely extends through joint member 26 Mount 24 and joint member 26 are preferably held together and in place by friction, with mount 24 and pivot rod 28 pivoting with respect to mount 24 when pivot lever 42 is rotated or when mount 24 is rotated. Similarly, pivot rod 34 is preferably integrally formed with or fixedly or removably attached to joint member 30 and partially or completely extends through clamp assembly 32. Clamp assembly 32 and joint member 30 are preferably held together and in place by friction, with joint member 30 and pivot rod 34 pivoting with respect to clamp assembly 32 when pivot lever 44 is rotated or when joint member 30 is rotated. In another embodiment pivot rod 28 is threaded for removable attachment to mount 24 and integrally formed with or fixedly attached to pivot lever 42, such that the rotation of pivot lever 42 in one direction reduces the friction between joint member 26 and mount 24, thus allowing mount 24 to pivot with respect to joint member 26, and the rotation of pivot lever 42 in the other direction increases the friction between joint member 26 and mount 24, holding them together and in place Similarly, pivot rod 34 is threaded for removable attachment to clamp assembly 32 and integrally formed with or fixedly attached to pivot lever 44, such that the rotation of pivot lever 44 in one direction reduces the friction between joint member 30 and clamp assembly 32, thus allowing joint member 30 to pivot with respect to clamp assembly 32, and the rotation of pivot lever 44 in the other direction increases the friction between joint member 30 and clamp assembly 32, holding them together and in place

Connecting screw 36 may be integrally formed with or fixedly attached to joint member 30 and threaded for removable attachment to joint member 26, allowing for adjustment of the distance between joint members 26 and 30 by rotating joint member 26 about connecting screw 36. Locking nuts 38 and 40 may then be tightened against joint members 26 and 30 to prevent further rotation of joint member 26. Alternatively, connecting screw 36 may be oppositely threaded at either end for removable attachment to both of joint members 26 and 30, whereby a disc 46 affixed to or integrally formed with connecting screw 36 may be rotated to adjust the distance between joint members 26 and 30.

Mount 24 and either of joint members 26 and 30 are preferably cooperatively positionabie in order to present handwriting input device 14 in an orientation necessary for input by hand 16 (Fig. 1) while hand 16 is in contact with gear shift 12.

Clamp assembly 32 preferably includes a clamp joint member 48, a clamping member 50 connected to member 48 via a screw 52, members 48 and 50 preferably being attached to a clamp housing 54 via grooves 56, a tightening base 58, a cap 62, and a tightening screw 60 which directly urges tightening base 58, and, indirectly, clamping member 50, against gear shift 12 from opposite sides of gear shift 12.

Reference is now made to Fig. 3 which is a simplified pictorial illustration of handwriting input device 14 taken along lines Ill-Ill of Fig. 2A. Device 14 preferably includes a frame 64 bounding a tactile input area 66 and a tactile scrolling area 68, and one or more illumination strips 70 for illuminating device 14 for nighttime use. Reference is now made to Fig. 4 which is a simplified pictorial illustration of an automobile steering wheel with integrated handwriting input device, constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. A steering wheel 72 is shown having a center portion 74 with a handwriting input device 76 embedded therein or otherwise attached thereto. Device 76 is preferably centrally located with respect to a peripheral edge 78 of steering wheel 72.

Reference is now made to Fig. 5 which is a simplified pictorial illustration of an automobile ashtray with integrated handwriting input device, constructed and operative in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention. An automobile ashtray 80, preferably assembled as part of a dashboard assembly 82, is shown with a handwriting input device 84 attached atop ashtray 80, typically with adhesive or any known attachment means.

While the present invention has been described with reference to a few specific embodiments, the description is intended to be illustrative of the invention as a whole and is not to be construed as limiting the invention to the embodiments shown. It is appreciated that various modifications may occur to those skilled in the art that, while not specifically shown herein, are nevertheless within the true spirit and scope of the invention.

Claims

CLAIMSWhat is claimed is:
1. Support apparatus assembled with a gear shift in an automobile.
2. Articulated support apparatus comprising: a first joint member; a mount pivotably connectable to said first joint member; a second joint member connectable to said first joint member; and a clamp assembly pivotably connectable to said second joint member and adapted to be secured to a gear shift.
3. Apparatus according to claim 2 and further comprising a connecting screw connecting said first and second joint members and wherein said first joint member is threadingly rotatable about said connecting screw.
4. Apparatus according to claim 2 and further comprising an oppositely threaded connecting screw connecting said first and second joint members.
5. Apparatus according to claim 2 and further comprising a handwriting input device attached to said mount and wherein said mount and any of said joint members are cooperatively positionabie thereby presenting said handwriting input device for input by a hand while said hand is in contact with said gear shift.
6. Articulated support apparatus comprising: a gear shift; a first joint member; a mount pivotably connectable to said first joint member; a handwriting input device attached to said mount; a second joint member connectable to said first joint member; and a clamp assembly pivotably connectable to said second joint member and adapted to be secured to said gear shift, wherein said mount and any of said joint members are cooperatively positionabie thereby presenting said handwriting input device for input by a hand while said hand is in contact with said gear shift.
7. A handwriting input device assembled with a steering wheel in an automobile.
8. A handwriting input device assembled with a gear shift in an automobile.
9. A handwriting input device assembled with an ashtray in an automobile.
