Abstract

The invention provides a substantially air impervious package in the form of a laminated plastic film bag (10). The bag (10) has a substantially air impervious wall (12) defining a cavity (14) for receiving an article to be packaged. Non-return valve means (16) in the form of an adhesive film layer (15) on which is deposited a silicone sealant type material (19) which has resiliently deformable or elastic properties, and on which is provided a porous layer (17), is provided on an inner surface (18) of the wall (12). The valve (16) sealingly bonds with the laminate plastics material of the bag (10).

Description

LOW PRESSURE PACKAGING

Field of the Invention

This invention relates to packaging, in particular it relates to low

pressure or vacuum packaging

Definition of Terms

In the specification unless the context clearly indicates to the contrary, the term "vacuum" is to be understood to mean a reduced pressure as is

usual in vacuum packaging of articles of commerce, and not absolute vacuum as is understood in scientific circles

Background of the Invention

The inventor has found that conventional vacuum packaging technology involves relatively complicated packaging machinery Due to the

design concepts of such machinery it is expensive and requires a relatively

high initial capital outlay such that usually only high throughput rates warrant

such an investment Summary of the Invention

Accordingly in accordance with a first aspect of the invention there is

5 provided a package having

a substantially air impervious body,

a wall defining a cavity within the body, and

one-way or non-return valve means provided to, in use, permit air to be

extracted from the cavity and thereafter to substantially seal against air 0 ingress into the cavity

The one-way or non-return valve means may be a self-sealing or auto-

sealing valve

^ The one-way or non-return valve means may be located inside the

cavity

The air impervious body may be made of a suitable laminated or

unlammated plastics material such as that known in the field of packaging

0 Equally, the air impervious body may be made from any other suitable

material, such as laminated plastics/metal and plastics foils, which is sealable

to form a package and has a low gas permeation rate, typically a low air

permeation rate

-> The impervious body may be a bag The non-return valve means may include an elastic polymeric material

which is deposited on the body, whether inside or outside the cavity The

elastic polymeric material may be of the type generically known as silicone

i sealant available from Genkem (Pty)Ltd, Henkel (SA)(Pty)Ltd, Dow

Cornιng(Pty)Ltd, or other manufacturers

According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a

flexible air impervious sheet having non-return valve means as described 10 above provided thereon

According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a

method of vacuum packing an article in a substantially air impervious package or bag including the steps of

i - providing one-way or non-return valve means in or on the package, arranging the article in the package, sealing the opening to the package,

inserting one or more extraction nozzles connected to a suction device into the package through the non-return valve means,

20 - extracting the air from the package through said extraction nozzles to

achieve a desired degree of evacuation of the package, and

withdrawing said nozzles from the non-return valve means thereby

sealing the evacuated package against ingress of air The one way or non-return valve means may be provided in the

package

The method may be fully-automatic, semi-automatic or manual

The one way or non-return valve means may be provided removably or

permanently on the package

The method may include the prior step of forming the package from a 0 sheet of flexible plastics material

The method may include the additional step of heat sealing a mouth opening of the package prior to evacuation of the package

i The method may include the step of flushing the package with an inert

gas such as Nitrogen, either prior to or after evacuation This step may

leave the package pressurised with the inert gas Typically this step is included when the article being packaged cannot tolerate the pressure

difference between atmospheric pressure and low pressure in the package

Preferably, the suction device used in the method is an oil free suction

device, for example, a dry running rotary vane vacuum pump A packaging machine for performing the invention may include devices

to prevent vapours, gases, liquids, powders, dust, and other materials to be

sucked into the suction pump

Description of the Drawings

The invention will now be described, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying drawings

In the drawings

Figure 1 shows a pictorial view of a laminated plastic film bag in accordance with the invention, and

Figure 2 shows a one way or non-return valve provided on a bag in accordance with the invention

In the drawings, reference numeral 10 generally indicates a

substantially air impervious package in the form of a laminated plastic film

bag 10 The bag 10 has a substantially air impervious wall 12 defining a

cavity 14 for receiving an article to packaged (not shown)

Non-return valve means 16 in the form of an adhesive film layer 15 on

which is deposited a silicone sealant type material 19 which has resilently

deformable or elastic properties, such as that available from Genkem

(Pty)Ltd, is and on which is provided a porous layer 17 is provided on an inner surface 18 of the wall 12 The valve 16 sealingly bonds with the

laminate plastics material of the bag 10

It is believed that the porous layer 17 serves as a gas transparent

spacer and filter

In the embodiment shown, an outer layer 21 , made of penetration

inhibiting material, prevents the nozzle from penetrating through and beyond

the porous layer

A product to be packaged is inserted into the bag 10

The bag 10 is heat sealed to form a barrier to air ingress into the bag

In use, a cylindrical nozzle 20 connected via a hose 22 to an oil free

suction device (in order to prevent contamination of the product especially in the case of edible products), such as a vacuum pump (not shown), is urged

by a user to pierce the wall 12 of the bag 10 and the valve 16 attached to the inner surface of the wall 12 thereby to come into flow communication with the

cavity 14 of the bag 10 The nozzle 20 seals against the valve 16 to prevent

air ingress at the periphery of the nozzle 20 into the bag 10 Air is evacuated

from the bag 10 via the hose 22 by means of the suction device (not shown)

until a desired level of evacuation is achieved This level will depend on the

article to be packaged in the bag 10 the type of suction device used and the

material from which the bag 10 is made Typically an absolute pressure of 40 mbar(abs) can be obtained in the bag 10 with an air volume of 1 litre, using a

vacuum pump with an effective pumping rate (volume flow rate) of 1 m3/h in a

time of about 12 seconds

When the desired vacuum level is achieved the nozzle 20 is withdrawn

from the bag 10 through the valve 16 and the wall 12 The elasticity of the

valve 16 silicone layer 19 causes the pierced hole through which the nozzle

20 entered the bag to close, thereby sealing the bag 10 against ingress of air

into the bag through the pierced hole

The inventor believes that it is an advantage of the invention, as illustrated, that a vacuum packaging means which can attain the vacuum

levels required for adequate preservation of the packaged article, but which is

less complex and thus less expensive to acquire and operate than existing

vacuum packaging means, is provided for domestic users and small to medium enterprises

The invention as illustrated is applicable to a wide spectrum of users

as a result of the comparatively low capital cost of the equipment required to

perform the invention Further advantages, of the invention as illustrated,

include simple and efficient operation and the applicability to a wide spectrum of products and product rates

The invention is not limited to the exact construction details

Claims

Claims
1 A low pressure package having
a substantially air impervious body,
a wall defining a cavity within the body, and
- one-way or non-return valve means provided to, in use, permit air to be
extracted from the cavity and thereafter to substantially seal against air
ingress into the cavity, characterised in that, the one way or non¬
return valve means includes at least a layer of resiliency deformable
material
2 A low pressure package as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the one-way or non-return valve means is a self-sealing or auto-sealing valve
3 A low pressure package as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the one-way or non-return valve means is located inside the cavity
4 A low pressure package as claimed in any one of the preceding
claims, wherein the air impervious body is made of a suitable flexible
laminated or unlaminated plastics material, laminated plastics/metal and plastics foils, which is sealable to form a package and has a low
gas permeation rate
5 A low pressure package as claimed in any one of the preceding
claims, wherein the air impervious body is a bag
A low pressure package as claimed in any one of the preceding
claims, wherein the non-return valve means includes an elastic
polymeric material which is deposited on the body, whether inside or
outside the cavity
A flexible air impervious sheet having non-return valve means as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, or claim 6
A flexible air impervious sheet as claimed in claim 7, configured to
form a bag around the non-return valve means so that the non-return valve means is in the formed bag
9 A method of vacuum packing an article in a substantially air
impervious package characterised by the steps of
- providing one-way or non-return valve means in or on the package, arranging the article in the package,
sealing the opening to the package,
inserting one or more extraction nozzles connected to a suction device into the package through the non-return valve means,
- extracting the air from the package through said extraction nozzles to
achieve a desired degree of evacuation of the package within a
desired time period, and
withdrawing said nozzles from the non-return valve means thereby
sealing the evacuated package against ingress of air
10 A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the one way or non-return
valve means is provided in the package
11 A method as claimed in claim 9 or claim 10, which method is
performed automatically, semi-automatic or manual
12 A method as claimed in any one of claims 9 to 11 , wherein the one way
or non-return valve means is removable from the package
13 A method as claimed in any one of claim 9 to 12, which method
includes the prior step of forming the package from a sheet of flexible plastics material
14 A method as claimed in claim 13, which includes the step of applying the non-return valve means to the flexible plastics material prior to
forming the package such that the non-return valve means is inside the package
15 A method as claimed in any one of claims 9 to 14, including the
additional step of heat sealing a mouth opening of the package prior to evacuation of the package
16. A method as claimed in any one of claims 9 to 15, including step of
flushing the package with an inert gas either prior to or after
^ evacuation
