Abstract

An electrical connector for mating two electrical connectors having non-conforming pin layouts. A pair of thin circular circuit boards (60, 65) within the connector have a series of plated throughholes (75, 80) around their respective peripheries. These circuit boards (60, 65) are manufactured with traces so that respective pins (25, 30) of the two electrical connectors to be electrically interconnected are connected by a printed circuit trace to juxtaposed plated throughholes (75, 80). Conductive pins (90) interconnect these juxtaposed throughholes so that two electrical connectors having differing pin configurations are electrically connected.

Description

INTERFACE ADAPTER

Field of the Invention The present invention relates to electrical connectors and more particularly to electrical connectors that mate non-conforming pin layouts. Description of the Related Art

Pin configurations are not necessarily standardized. One company's or country's standards may often differ with another company or country. Integrating equipment having different pin configurations is at best difficult and inconvenient and, where space is limited, it may necessitate removing a plug and replacing it with a conforming plug in place of the one removed. This obviously inhibits world wide commerce and building systems using electrical modules and subsystems with differing pin configurations.

Summary of the Invention The present invention utilizes a pair of thin circular circuit boards which have a series of through-plated holes located around their periphery. Each set of pins is connected to a respective trace which in turn is connected to one of the peripheral throughplated holes. A plated hole in one printed circuit disc is juxtaposing a plated hole in the other printed circuit disc, with each hole being connected to respective pins which are to be electrically connected together. In this manner, the interface adapter may be constructed in a size comparable to a standard electrical connector, thereby making it feasible to easily electrically connect modules which would otherwise be very difficult to use in a common system.

Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 is an enlarged cross sectional view of an embodiment of the interface adapter;

Figure 2 is an end elevational view of one end of an embodiment of the interface adapter; Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the opposite end of the interface adapter;

Figures 4 and 5 are enlarged top planar views of typical printed circuit boards used within the interface adapter; and Figure 6 is an exploded view showing the respective parts of the interface adapter.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment The interface adapter is advantageously enclosed in an aluminum cylindrical shell 10 having external threads 15 for mating with a plug (not shown) having a particular array of electrical contact pins that necessarily must be attached to another non-conforming plug (not shown) having a different array of pins. This second, non-conforming plug is attached to the shell by a threaded retainer member 20 rotatably attached to shell 10.

The significant problem solved by this invention is best shown with reference to respective end view of Figures 2 and 3. It will be immediately apparent that the array of contact pins 25 is wholly different than the array of contact pins 30 and coaxial connects 35 of Figure 3.

Referring again to Figure 1, the respective sets of pins 25, 30 are mounted in a respective insulated bases 40, 45, the pins advantageously extending through suitable sealing members 50, 55. The first set of pins 25 make electrical contact with traces formed on a circular printed circuit board 60 shown in Figure 4. This board is mounted proximate to a second printed circuit board 65 with a disc 70 of resilient silicon rubber therebetween. Besides insulating board 60 from board 65, the rubber disc 70 advantageously allows the boards to be installed compressed together within shell 10 to maintain their electrical and physical integrity under conditions of vibration and shock. The second set of pins 30 and coaxial connectors 35 electrically engage traces on the second board 65.

The traces on board 60 are laid out such that each pin 25 is respectively connected by a printed circuit trace to a throughhole contact 75 located at the edge of the board. By way of example, pin 25a may be electrically connected to throughhole contact 75a (see Figure 1).

Again, by way of example, assume that pin 25a corresponds to pin 30a in the non-conforming pin arrangement, i.e., pin 30a is to be electrically connected to pin 30a of the different pin configuration 30. The trace pattern of the second circuit board 65 is then laid out such that contact 30a is connected by a printed circuit board trace to the throughhole 80a in juxtaposition with throughhole 75a. An electrical connection is made between throughholes 75a and 80a by simply locating a conductive pin 90 from one board to the other. In similar manner, each of the peripheral throughholes 75 in board 60 which line up with throughholes 80 in board 65 respectively connect a pin in set 25 to a the requisite pin or connector of set 30. As a result, the non-conforming plug attaches to the pin set 30 in the same fashion as if this plug was in conformance with the plug attached to pin set 25.

Although the foregoing invention has been described in terms of certain preferred embodiments, other embodiments will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art. Accordingly, the present invention is not intended to be limited by the recitation of the preferred embodiments, but is instead to be defined by reference to the appended claims.

Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. An electrical connector for mating two connectors having non-mating pin layouts comprising: first and second circular circuit boards having a series of throughholes located proximate the periphery of said circuit boards, electrical traces formed on each of said first and second circular circuit boards, said traces electrically connecting pins to be mated to juxtaposed sets of said throughholes, and conductive pins connecting said juxtaposed throughholes
2. An electrical connector for mating two connectors having non-mating pin layouts comprising: first and second circular circuit boards having a series of throughholes, electrical traces formed on each of said first and second circular circuit boards, said traces electrically connecting pins to be mated to juxtaposed sets of said throughholes, and conductors connecting said juxtaposed throughholes.
3. An electrical connector for mating non-mating two connectors having pin layouts comprising: first and second circuit boards having a series of throughholes located proximate the periphery of said circuit boards, electrical traces formed on each of said first and second circular circuit boards, said traces electrically connecting pins to be mated to juxtaposed sets of said throughholes, and conductors connecting said juxtaposed throughholes.
4. An interface adapter having: first and second circular circuit boards, each of said boards having traces between respective connector pins and a series of throughholes located proximate the periphery of circuit boards, and conductive pins mounted in juxtaposed throughholes of each printed circuit board.
