Abstract

The invention relates to a steering system for motor vehicles that are provided with electric control devices. A steering angle predetermined at the steering wheel (4) is transmitted to an electric steering motor (1) by a control device (6) in such a manner that the steerable vehicle wheels (2, 3) are brought into the corresponding steering position by the steering motor (1). An adjusting element (10) communicates a desired basic position of the steerable vehicle wheels (2, 4) to the control device (6). The control unit (6) prompts the steering motor (1) to align the steerable vehicle wheels (2, 3) in the predetermined basic position while or once the vehicle is parked.

Description

Steering device for vehicles with electric control devices

The invention relates to a steering device for vehicles with electric control means according to the preamble of claim 1.

There are known steering devices for vehicles, in which there is no mechanical coupling between the steering wheel and the steerable vehicle wheels. The steering movements carried out on the steering wheel can be detected electronically by means of angle sensors or other means and converted via electrical control means into corresponding steering movements on the steerable vehicle wheels. Such steering devices are known under the term "steer by wire systems."

From DE 195 39 101 C1, such a steering apparatus with electrical control means is known in which a restoring spring assembly engages as part of a simulator feedback to the handlebar of the steering wheel. The return spring arrangement has the advantage that a reaction force is generated upon deflection of the steering wheel from its straight position, which is to give the driver a feeling of steering, as in conventional steering systems the purpose. At the return spring assembly adjustable abutment for this purpose are also arranged to achieve a desired feedback to the steering wheel simulation. When driving, the restoring torque acting on the steering wheel for a released steering wheel can reset this largely into the straight exhibition. When the vehicle is an automatic return of the steering wheel by the restoring torque is not possible.

In a power steering system with hydraulic power assistance, as is known from DE 197 17 796 A1, the steerable vehicle wheels and the steering gear can be reset with hydraulic assistance by a release of the steering wheel after a steering operation. An electric motor is not used for this power steering, as the hydraulic power assistance is delivered exclusively by a servo pump. When the vehicle is thus the steerable vehicle wheels can no longer be aligned in a desired position. The invention harbors an object of the invention to provide a steering device for vehicles with electrical control means, which enables an automatic alignment of the steerable vehicle wheels in a desired initial position with the vehicle parked motor

The solution of this object is obtained by the features listed in claim 1. At or shortly after switching off of the motor vehicle, an electric steering motor is directed from the steerable vehicle wheels in a predetermined basic position. The basic position here must not necessarily be the straight-ahead if the vehicle is parked on a street with a strong gradient, a basic position of the vehicle wheels may be expedient when the steerable vehicle wheels are turned to the side to the curb out.

It is particularly advantageous to display the area occupied by the steerable Fahrzeugradem basic position in the form of a direction indicating the driver is. The driver can then decide whether he liked to keep this basic position or another. Displaying the basic position also has benefits when leaving a parking space because the driver knows the starting position of the vehicle wheels and can make appropriate steering movements for leaving a parking space targeted.
