Abstract

A pumping mechanism has a pumping chamber (5) which receives a liquid such as water from a liquid supply (1) and from which the liquid is driven in a driving phase of the pumping cycle by an actuator (4) into a discharge conduit (6, 8) and in the discharge conduit (6, 8) to an outlet. In addition, liquid passes from the liquid supply (1) to a by-pass conduit (7) to the outlet (3) via at least part of the discharge conduit (6, 8) without having passed through the pumping chamber (5). This arrangement absorbs energy during the driving phase, which energy is released to drive liquid via the by-pass conduit (7) to the outlet (3) at another part of the pumping cycle. The discharge conduit (6, 8) and the by-pass conduit (7) act as fluid inductances (L1, L3, L2). A chamber (9) with a resilient wall may be provided to receive liquid during the driving phase and so act as a liquid capacitance.
