Abstract

The invention relates to ethoxylated allyloligoglycosides of the formula (I): R1O(CH2CH2O)n[G]p, wherein R1 represents an allyl radical, G represents a sugar radical with 5-6 carbon atoms an n and independently represent 1-10. The substances are obtained by acetalating glucose in the presence of basic catalysts with a molar surplus of ethoxylated allyl alcohol, the catalyst is subsequently neutralised and the unreacted allylalcoholpolyglycolether is removed by distillation. The glycosides can be optionally polymerised with comonomers and are thus suitable as co-builders for detergents or thickening agents for aqueous surfactant solutions.

Ethoxylierte Allyloligoglykoside und deren PolymereEthoxylated allyl oligoglycosides and their polymers
Gebiet der ErfindungField of the Invention
The present invention is in the field of sugar polymers and relates to new sugar compounds and their polymers, processes for producing the monomers and polymers, and the use of the polymers in the field of detergents and cosmetic preparations.
Stand der TechnikState of the art
So beschreibt z. Polymers based on sugars, especially glucosides, have long been known in nature. The most important examples of such biopolymers are starch, glycogen and cellulose. In addition, there has been no lack of attempts to synthetically produce further polymers based on sugar monomers, since such compounds can generally be obtained from renewable raw materials and the polymers are often advantageous compared to known synthetic polymers in terms of environmental compatibility, in particular biodegradability Have properties. For example, B. the US Statutory Invention Registration H643 polyester, which are obtained by reacting aromatic polybasic acids or anhydrides with glycoside-containing polyol mixtures. No. 4,713,436 discloses a process for the production of polyesters from lower alkyl esters of polybasic acids with polyol mixtures containing glycoside.
In addition to the mono- and / or disaccharides themselves, derivatives of these compounds can also be polymerized in different ways. Sugar monomers which contain a double bond suitable for radical polymerization in the molecule are particularly interesting. An example of such monomers are allyl glucosides, which can be obtained, for example, by reacting glucose with allyl alcohol in the presence of an acidic catalyst, for example a mineral acid. However, the reaction rate of monoallyl compounds in free-radical polymerization is known to be very slow [cf. HG Elias, Macromolecules, pages 467 - 469, Hüthig & Wepf Verlag, Basel, 1990)]. The object of the present invention was therefore to provide new polymers based on sugar, which can be prepared with the least possible technical effort in short times and high yields and which can be used in detergents and cosmetics.

Surprisingly, it was found that the incorporation of ethylene oxide groups into the bond between glycose and alcohol leads to monomers which react much faster in the homo- or copolymerization than the non-ethoxylated homologues. The invention includes the knowledge that the increased hydrophilicity of the polymers also leads to improved application properties, in particular as regards the complexing ability of alkaline earth metal ions and the thickening of surfactant solutions.

I),The invention further relates to a process for the preparation of ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides of the formula (I),

Aus anwendungstechnischer Sicht sind solche ethoxylierten Allyloligoglykoside bevorzugt, deren Oligomerisierungsgrad kleiner als 1 ,7 ist und insbesondere zwischen 1,2 und 1 ,6 liegt.R 1 for an allyl residue, G for a sugar residue with 5 or. 6 carbon atoms and n and p each independently represent numbers from 1 to 10, preferably 2 to 5, in which glycoses are acetalized in the presence of basic catalysts with a molar excess of ethoxylated allyl alcohol, the catalyst is then neutralized and the unreacted allyl alcohol polyglycol ether is distilled off . The ethoxylated allyl glycosides can be derived from aldoses or ketoses with 5 or 6 carbon atoms, preferably glucose. The preferred ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides are thus ethoxylated allyl oligoglucosides. The index number p in the general formula (1) indicates the degree of oligomerization (DP), ie the distribution of mono- and oligoglycosides, and stands for a number between 1 and 10. While p in a given compound must always be an integer and here can assume the values p = 1 to 6, the value p is for a certain ethoxylated allyl oligoglycoside is an analytically calculated quantity, which is usually a fractional number. Ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides with an average degree of oligomerization p of 1.1 to 3.0 are preferably used. From an application point of view, those ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides are preferred whose degree of oligomerization is less than 1.7 and in particular between 1.2 and 1.6.
Homo- und CopolymereHomopolymers and copolymers
The invention further relates to polymeric glycosides which are obtained by free-radically homo- or copolymerizing ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides either alone or in admixture with other olefinic comonomers in aqueous solution. However, the polymers according to the invention generally contain more than one monomer unit of the general formula (I). It is preferred that the polymers contain at least 10% by weight of monomer units of the formula (I). Polymers which are composed only of monomer units of the formula (I) are particularly preferred. As already explained, the polymers according to the invention can contain, in addition to the monomer unit of the formula (I), further, structurally different comonomer units. The polymers according to the invention therefore include both true copolymers and also block or graft copolymers which contain at least one monomer unit of the formula (I).

The copolymers according to the invention preferably have average molecular weights (Mw) between 1,000 and 1,500,000 and preferably between 10,000 and 1,000,000 Daltons.
Homo- und CopolymerisationHomo- and copolymerization
The present invention further relates to a process for the preparation of polymeric glycosides, in which ethoxylated allyl oligoglucosides are subjected to free radical homo- or copolymerization in aqueous solution either alone or in admixture with other olefinic comonomers. The process according to the invention can be designed in such a way that the ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides, optionally in a mixture with the olefinic comonomers, are initially introduced in an aqueous solution and then the free-radical polymerization takes place. It has proven advantageous to use the ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides in aqueous solution in order to be able to control the viscosity of the reaction mixture. Aqueous solutions with a content of 10 to 90, in particular 40 to 60,% by weight of glycoside are preferably used.
Radikalische PolymerisationRadical polymerization
Der Anteil an nicht umgesetzten Monomeren kann, je nach Reaktionsbedingungen und der Art der eingesetzten Monomeren, zwischenRadical polymerization is preferred with the addition of a radical-generating reagent, a so-called radical initiator, by means of which the actual polymerization reaction is started. This addition is preferably carried out under constant temperature control, it being advantageous that the reaction temperature does not rise above 110.degree. The radical starter usually becomes liquid formulated and continuously fed or added dropwise into the reaction vessel. The time for the reaction of the monomers with the radical initiator is generally 1 to 5 hours. It may be advantageous to subsequently stir the reaction solution for a further 1 to 6 hours at the selected reaction temperature and only then to start working up. It can also be advantageous to put only one of the monomers in water and then to add the other monomer and the radical initiator. The reaction temperature should also be set carefully in this type of production. The suitable temperature range is between 60 and 100 ° C. When the radical initiator is added, temperatures of more than 100 ° C in the reaction mixture can briefly occur, but this should be avoided by taking suitable technical measures. A process control in which a reaction temperature between 70 and 90 ° C. is maintained is particularly preferred. All compounds known to the person skilled in the art for this purpose are suitable as radical initiators. Polymers according to the invention are particularly preferred, in the production of which radicals H2O2 or K2S2O8 are used. The process according to the invention usually leads to products which still contain small amounts of unreacted monomers. However, this fraction can be removed by separation processes known to the person skilled in the art, for example the precipitation of the unreacted monomers in suitable solvents. The proportion of unreacted monomers can, depending on the reaction conditions and the type of monomers used, between
Vorzugsweise wird das Verfahren aber so geführt, daß der Anteil an nicht umgesetztem Monomeren zwischen 0,5 und1 and 20 wt .-%, based on the total weight of the monomers used. However, the process is preferably carried out in such a way that the proportion of unreacted monomer is between 0.5 and
2 Gew.-% liegt. In the process according to the invention, it has proven to be advantageous to react the ethoxylated allyl oligoglycosides and the olefinic comonomers with one another in certain molar ratios in order to improve the yield of the desired polymers. It is therefore particularly preferred to use the glycosides and the comonomers in a molar ratio of 1: 4 to 4: 1, preferably 1: 2 to 2: 1 and in particular about 1: 1 in the polymerization reaction
VernetzerCrosslinker
The process according to the invention can also be designed such that the monomers are reacted together with a crosslinking agent. Such crosslinked polymers are often distinguished by particularly advantageous performance properties. Crosslinking agents are understood to mean monomers which contain at least two ethylenically unsaturated groups, for example diallyl sucrose, allyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, tetraethylene glycol dimethacrylate, tripropylene glycol diacrylate or trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate. Tripropylene glycol diacrylate in particular is used as crosslinker in the synthesis of the polymers according to the invention. The crosslinker is used in amounts between 0.01 and 6% by weight, preferably in amounts between 0.02 and 1.5% by weight, based on the amount of monomers. It is also possible, furthermore, to prepare the homopolymers or copolymers prepared by means of the process according to the invention in a separate reactor. step to network. For this purpose, the polymers are reacted in the presence of a crosslinking agent and a suitable photoinitiator under the influence of light of the wavelength range 200 to 700 nm and preferably 300 to 400 nm at room temperature. Photoinitiators are substances that form free radicals under the influence of light, which then trigger polymerization. Examples of such compounds known to the person skilled in the art are quinones, benzoin ethers or benzil compounds [cf. Houben-Weyl, Methods of Organic Chemistry, E20 / 1, Thieme-Verlag 1987, pages 90-91]. The photoinitiator is usually used in amounts of 0.1 to 5% by weight and preferably in amounts of 0.5 to 1.5% by weight, based on the amount of polymers used.
Gewerbliche AnwendbarkeitIndustrial applicability
The polymers according to the invention can be water-soluble or water-insoluble, depending on the preparation and type of the monomers used. Water-insoluble polymers are obtained, for example, in the polymerization of ethoxylated allyl oligoglucoside with acrylic acid / methacrylic acid in the presence of crosslinking agents. Water-insoluble polymers are also obtained in the polymerization of ethoxylated allyl oligoglucoside with vinyl acetate. However, preference is given to polymers which are completely water-soluble at 20 ° C. The homo- and copolymers are characterized by a good binding capacity for alkali metal ions and build up viscosity in surfactant solutions. Two further objects of the invention therefore relate to the use of the polymeric glycosides as a co-builder for preferably powdered detergents and as a thickener for aqueous surfactant preparations. For this purpose, they can be used in amounts of 1 to 20, preferably 5 to 10% by weight (builder) or 0.1 to 0.5% by weight (thickener).
