Abstract
According to the present invention, a method and system provides the ability to assign requests for data objects made by clients among multiple network servers. The invention provides a distributed computing system and methods to assign user requests to replicated servers contained by the distributed computing system in a manner that attempts to meet the goals of a particular routing policy. STATEMENT UNDER ARTICLE 19
In response to the International Search Report, Applicant has amended the claims. In particular, Applicant has amended claims 1, 4, 11, and 21 to more clearly define an implementation consistent with the invention and has amended claims 2, 19, and 20 to correct grammatical errors.
The International Search Report listed the EP 648 038 reference as having particular relevance to claims 1-3, 7-13, 17-23, and 26-29. Applicant respectfully submits that the claims, as now amended, are distinguishable over that reference.
41
Independent claims 1, 1 1, and 21, as amended, state that requests are routed based upon a policy concerning a response time. In comparison, the EP references describes a system for routing requests based upon particular test criteria and lists the following as examples of test criteria: an amount of idle processor time; the number of processors running; an amount of free memory; a load average; and the server having the least number of client programs, identified as the preferred test criteria. (Col. 3, lines 46-54.) None of the exemplary test criteria involve response time and, as indicated by the preferred criteria, the system involves determining a least loaded server in terms of a number of client programs on each server. The system thus seeks to distribute the load evenly among multiple servers to avoid having a server become "too busy."
In comparison, routing requests based upon response time addresses a different problem. In particular, the problem does not necessarily involve spreading the load evenly, as addressed by the EP reference. Rather, the problem involves providing, for example, an optimum response time to reduce the amount of time a user must wait for a response, and the system thus routes requests based upon a response time policy, regardless as to the load of each server. As a result, the system does not necessarily address or determine the load of each server when deteπnining a server to receive a request based upon the policy. Accordingly, since the system involves a problem not addressed by the EP reference, the claims as amended are distinguishable over the reference.
