負の誘電率異方性値を有する液晶性化合物、 液晶組成物および液晶表示素子 技術分野
本発明は、 新規液晶性化合物および液晶組成物に関し、 さらに詳しくは、 フッ 素置換一 し 4 一フ 二レン基を有する液晶性化合物、 この化合物を含有する液 晶組成物、 およびこの液晶組成物を用いて構成した液晶表示素子に関する。 背景技術
液晶性化合物 (本願において、 液晶性化合物なる用語は、 液晶相を示す化合物 および液晶相を示さないが液晶組成物の構成成分として有用である化合物の総称 として用いられる。 ) を用いた表示素子は、 時計、 電卓、 ワープロ等のディスプ レイに広く利用されている。 近年では、 安価に視野角特性を改善することができ るインプレーンスイッチング ( I P S ) 方式およびヴァ一ティカルァラインメン ト (V A) 方式の研究が盛んに行われている。
I P S方式および V A方式用の液晶組成物では、 負の誘電率異方性値を有する ものが好適であり、 さらに、 高い電圧保持率および低いしきい値電圧を有し、 そ れらの温度依存性が小さく、 広い液晶相温度範囲を有し、 他の液晶材料との相溶 性に優れ、 低粘性であること等の物性が求められている。
このような液晶組成物の成分として側方位がフッ素置換された液晶性化合物が 数多く検討され、 例えば、 下記の化合物が開示された文献がある。
しかしながら、 1 ) の化合物はしきい値電圧が高く、 2 ) および 3 ) の化合物 は等方相転移温度が低い、 あるいはスメクチック相を示しやすく、 液晶組成物の 成分として使用した場合、 特に低温下で安定なネマチック相を形成し難い等の問
題点を有していた。
発明の開示
本発明の目的は、 前記の要求特性に鑑み、 負の誘電率異方性値を示すと共に極 めて高い電圧保持率および低いしきい値電圧を有し、 また、 それらの温度依存性 が極めて小さく、 スメクチック相を示しにく く、 さらに、 他の液晶材料との相溶 性に優れた液晶性化合物、 これを含有する液晶組成物および該液晶組成物を用い て構成した液晶表示素子を提供することにある。
本発明者らは、 上記課題の解決のため鋭意研究の結果、 一般式 ( 1 )
(式中、 Raおよび Rbは各々独立して炭素数 1〜2 0の直鎖または分岐アルキ ル基を示し、 これらの基中の相隣接しない任意のメチレン基 (― CH2—) は酸 素原子で置換されていてもよく ; Υ,、 Υ2、 Υ3、 Υ4、 Υ5および Ysは各々独立 して水素原子またはフッ素原子を示すが、 Υ2、 Υ3、 Υ4、 Υ5および Ysの うち少なく とも 3っはフッ素原子を示し; および Z 2は各々独立して一 (CH 2) 2—、 ― (CH2) 4一、 — CH20—、 - (CH2) 30—および単結合を示し、 ただし、 Z,および Z2が共に単結合であることはなく ; また、 この化合物を構成 する原子はいずれもその同位体で置換されていてもよい。 ) で表される液晶性化 合物が所期の性能を有することを知り本発明を完成するに至った。
一般式 ( 1 ) で表される化合物の一部は、 前記先行文献 1 ) および 3) の請求 の範囲等に形式的には包含されるが、 これらの先行文献には本発明の化合物に関 して、 物性値等のデータが一切記載されておらず、 その特性について具体的な言 及もなく、 本発明の有用性を示唆するものではなかった。
一般式 ( 1 ) で表される化合物は下記の (a— 1 ) 〜 (a— 24) のように類 別される。

式中、 R aおよび Rbは炭素数 1〜2 0の直鎖または分岐アルキル基であるが、 具体的には直鎖アルキル基としてはメチル、 ェチル、 プロピル、 プチル、 ペンチ ル、 へキシル、 ヘプチル、 デシル、 ペン夕デシル、 ィコシル等を、 また分岐アル
キル基としてはイソプロピル、 s e c—プチル、 t e r t —プチル、 2—メチル ブチル、 イソペンチル、 イソへキシル、 3—ェチルォクチル、 3 , 8—ジメチル テトラデシル、 5—ェチルー 5—メチルノナデシル等を例示することができる。 なお、 分岐アルキル基は光学活性を示すものであってもよく、 そのような化合物 はキラルドープ剤として有用である。
また、 これらのアルキル基中の相隣接しない任意のメチレン基は酸素原子で置 換されていてもよく、 具体的には、 メ トキシ、 エトキシ、 プロボキシ、 ブトキシ、 ペンチルォキシおよびノニルォキシ等のアルコキシ基、 メ トキシメチル、 メ トキ シェチル、 メ トキシプロピル、 メ トキシブチル、 メ トキシペンチル、 メ トキシォ クチル、 エトキシメチル、 エトキシェチル、 エトキシプロピル、 エトキンへキシ ル、 プロボキシメチル、 プロボキシェチル、 プロポキシプロピル、 プロポキシぺ ンチル、 ブトキシメチル、 ブトキシェチル、 ブトキシブチル、 ペンチルォキシメ チル、 ペンチルォキシブチ
のアルコキシアルキル基等を例示することができる。
本発明の一般式 ( 1 ) で示される液晶性化合物は、 一般的な有機合成法によつ て製造することができるが、 例えば以下のような方法で簡便に製造することがで きる。

一般式 ( 1 ) において、 R中に一 0—を含む化合物も同様の方法で製造するこ とができる。
原料であるジヒドロキシボラン誘導体 (上) も公知の一般的な有機合成法によ つて製造することができるが、 例えば以下のような方法で簡便に製造することが できる。

(schemes) すなわち、 s c h e m e 6に示すごとく、 ハロゲン化合物 ( 1 4 ) とマグネシ ゥ厶から調製した G r i g n a r d試薬とトリメ トキシボランまたはトリィソプ 口ピルォキシボラン等のトリアルコキシボランとを反応させた後、 塩酸または硫 酸等で加水分解することによってジヒドロキシボラン誘導体 (丄) を製造するこ とができる。
上述の反応は全て公知のものであるが、 必要によりさらに他の既知反応を使用 できることは言うまでもない。
このようにして得られる本発明の液晶性化合物は、 極めて高い電圧保持率およ び低いしきい値電圧を有し、 それらの温度依存性が極めて小さく、 スメクチック 相を示しにくいうえ、 他の液晶材料との相溶性に優れている。 また、 これらの本 発明液晶性化合物は、 液晶表示素子が通常使用される条件下において物理的およ び化学的に十分安定であり、 ネマチック液晶組成物の構成成分として極めて優れ ている。
本発明の化合物は、 T N、 S T Nおよび T F T用の液晶組成物においても、 そ の構成成分として好適に使用することができる。
一般式 ( 1 ) で表される化合物は、 比較的高い等方相転移温度と低粘性を示す また、 以下の部分構造を有する化合物は、 特に大きな負の誘電率異方性値を示 す。
環構造中の水素原子をフッ素原子に置換することによって、 より大きな誘電率 異方性値をとることが可能であり、 同時に相溶性も改善され得る。
さらに、 本発明化合物中の原子が、 その同位体で置換された化合物も同様の特 性を示すことから好ましいものといえる。
これらのことから環、 側鎖、 置換基および結合基を適当に選択することにより 所望の物性を有する新たな液晶性化合物を得ることができる。
以下、 本発明の液晶組成物に関して説明する。 本発明に係る液晶組成物は、 一 般式 ( 1 ) で表される化合物の少なく とも 1種を 0 . 1〜9 9 . 9重量%の割合 で含有すること力 優良な特性を発現せしめるために好ましく、 より好ましくは その割合は 1〜 6 0重量%である。
さらに詳しくは、 本発明で提供される液晶組成物は、 一般式 ( 1 ) で表される 化合物を少なく とも 1種含有する第一成分に加え、 一般式 ( 2 ) 〜 ( 1 2 ) で表 される化合物群から液晶組成物の目的に応じて選択される化合物を混合すること により完成する。
本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 ( 2 ) 〜 (4 ) で表される化合物の好 ましい例として以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 (2) 〜 (4) で表される化合物は誘電率異方性値が正の化合物であり、 熱的安定性や化学的安定性が非常に優れており、 特に電圧保持率の高い、 あるい は比抵抗値の大きいといった高信頼性が要求される T FT用の液晶組成物を調製 する場合に、 極めて有用な化合物である。
TFT用の液晶組成物を調製する場合、 一般式 ( 2) 〜 (4) で表される化合 物の使用量は、 液晶組成物の全重量に対して 0. 1〜9 9. 9重量%の範囲で使 用できる力 好ましくは 1 0〜9 7重量%、 より好ましくは 4 0〜9 5重量%で ある。 また、 一般式 ( 7) 〜 ( 9) で表される化合物を、 粘度調整の目的でさら に含有してもよい。
STNまたは TN用の液晶組成物を調製する場合も一般式 ( 2) 〜 ( 4) で表 される化合物を使用することができるが、 5 0重量%以下の使用量が好ましい。 本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 ( 5) および ( 6) で表される化合物 の好ましい例として以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 (5) および ( 6) で表される化合物は誘電率異方性値が正でその値が 大きく、 特に液晶組成物のしきい値電圧を小さくする目的で使用される。 また、 屈折率異方性値の調整、 透明点を高くする等のネマチックレンジを広げる目的に も使用される。 さらに、 STNまたは ΤΝ用の液晶組成物の電圧—透過率特性の 急峻性を改良する目的にも使用される。
一般式 (5) および (6) で表される化合物は、 STNおよび ΤΝ用の液晶組 成物を調製する場合には、 特に有用な化合物である。
液晶組成物中に一般式 (5) および ( 6) で表される化合物の量が増加すると、 液晶組成物のしきい値電圧は小さくなるが、 粘度が上昇する。 したがって、 液晶 組成物の粘度が要求値を満足している限り、 多量に使用した方が低電圧駆動でき
るので有利である。 STNまたは TN用の液晶組成物を調製する場合に、 一般式 (5) および (6) で表される化合物の使用量は 0. 1〜99. 9重量%の範囲 で使用できるが、 好ましくは 1 0〜97重量%、 より好ましくは 40〜95重量 %である。
本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 (7) 〜 (9) で表される化合物の好 ましい例として以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 (7) 〜 (9) で表される化合物は、 誘電率異方性の絶対値が小さく、 中性に近い化合物である。 一般式 (7) で表される化合物は主として粘度調整ま たは屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。 また、 一般式 (8) および ( 9 ) で表される化合物は透明点を高くする等のネマチックレンジを広げる目的ま たは屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。
—般式 (7) 〜 ( 9) で表される化合物の使用量を増加させると液晶組成物の しきい値電圧が大きくなり、 粘度が小さくなる。 したがって、 液晶組成物のしき い値電圧が要求値を満足している限り、 多量に使用することが望ましい。 TFT 用の液晶組成物を調製する場合に、 一般式 (7) 〜 ( 9) で表される化合物の使 用量は、 好ましくは 4 0重量%以下、 より好ましくは 3 5重量%以下である。 ま た、 STNまたは TN用の液晶組成物を調製する場合には、 一般式 (7) 〜 ( 9) で表される化合物の使用量は、 好ましくは 7 0重量%以下、 より好ましくは 6 0重量%以下である。
本発明の液晶組成物に用いられる一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 ( 1 2) で表される化合物 の好ましい例として以下の化合物を挙げることができる。

一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表される化合物は、 誘電率異方性値が負の化合物 である。 一般式 (1 0) で表される化合物は 2環化合物であるので、 主としてし きレ、値電圧の調整、 坫度調整または屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。 一般式 ( 1 1) で表される化合物は透明点を高くする等のネマチックレンジを広 げる目的または屈折率異方性値の調整の目的で使用される。 一般式 (1 2) の化 合物はネマチックレンジを広げる目的の他、 しきい値電圧を小さくする目的およ び屈折率異方性値を大きくする目的で使用される。
一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 ( 1 2) で表される化合物は主として誘電率異方性値が負で ある液晶組成物に使用される。 その使用量を増加させると組成物のしきい値電圧 が小さくなるが、 粘度が大きくなる。 したがって、 しきい値電圧の要求値を満足 している限り、 少なく使用することが望ましい。 しかしながら、 誘電率異方性値 の絶対値が 5以下であるので、 40重量%より少なくなると電圧駆動ができなく なる場合がある。 一般式 (1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表される化合物の使用量は、 誘電 率異方性値が負である T FT用の組成物を調製する場合には 40重量%以上が好 ましいが、 50〜 95重量%が好適である。 また弾性定数をコントロールし、 組 成物の電圧—透過率曲線を制御する目的で、 一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 (1 2) で表され る化合物を誘電率異方性値が正である組成物に混合する場合もある。 この場合の 一般式 ( 1 0) 〜 ( 1 2) で表される化合物の使用量は 30重量%以下が好まし い。
また、 本発明の液晶組成物では、 OCB (Op t i c a l l y Comp en s a t e d B i r e f r i nge n c e) モ一ド用液晶組成物等の特別な場合 を除き、 液晶組成物のらせん構造を誘起して必要なねじれ角を調整し、 逆ねじれ (r e v e r s e twi s t) を防ぐ目的で、 通常、 光学活性化合物を添加す る。 このような目的で公知のいずれの光学活性化合物も使用できるが、 好ましい 例として以下の光学活性化合物を挙げることができる。

本発明の液晶組成物は、 通常、 これらの光学活性化合物を添加して、 ねじれの ピッチを調整する。 ねじれのピッチは、 T FT用および TN用の液晶組成物であ れば 40〜200 mの範囲に調整するのが好ましい。 STN用の液晶組成物で あれば 6〜20 mの範囲に調整するのが好ましい。 また、 双安定 TN (B i s t ab l e TN) モード用の場合は、 1. 5〜 4 /mの範囲に調整するのが好 ましい。 また、 ピッチの温度依存性を調整する目的で、 2種以上の光学活性化合 物を添加してもよい。
本発明の液晶組成物は、 慣用な方法で調製される。 一般には、 種々の成分を高 い温度で互いに溶解させる方法がとられている。
また、 本発明の液晶組成物は、 メロシアニン系、 スチリル系、 ァゾ系、 ァゾメ チン系、 ァゾキシ系、 キノフタロン系、 アントラキノン系、 およびテトラジン系 等の二色性色素を添加してゲストホスト (GH) モード用の液晶組成物としても 使用できる。 あるいは、 ネマチック液晶をマイクロカプセル化して作製した NC A Pや液晶中に三次元網目状高分子を作製したポリマーネッ トワーク液晶表示素 子 (PNLCD) に代表されるポリマー分散型液晶表示素子 (PDLCD) 用の 液晶組成物としても使用できる。 その他、 複屈折制御 (ECB) モードや動的散 乱 (DS) モード用の液晶組成物としても使用できる。

実施例 1
4—エトキン一 2, 3, 3 ' 一トリフルオロー 4' 一 (2— (4—プロピルフ ェニル) ェチル) ビフヱニル (20— B (2, 3 F) B ( 3 F) 2 B - 3 (化合 物 No. 1 ) ) の製造。
(第一段) 4一エトキシー 2, 3, 3' —トリフルォロビフエニルの製造
4一エトキシ一 2, 3—ジフルォロヨ一ドベンゼン 〔4—エトキン一 2, 3— ジフルォロベンゼンを s e c—ブチルリチウムでリチォ化した後、 ヨウ素と反応 させて得た。 〕 20. 0 g (7 9. 3mmo l ) 、 ジヒドロキシ( 3—フルォロ フエニル)ボラン 〔 3—フルォロブロモベンゼンとマグネシゥムから調製した G r i gn a r d試薬とトリメ トキシボランを反応させた後、 塩酸で加水分解して 得た。 〕 1 8. 9 g ( 1 1 8. 9mmo l ) 、 K2C〇3 2 1. 9 g ( 1 5 8. 6mmo l ) 、 5 %P d -C 2. 0 gおよびトルエン/エタノール Z水 ( 1 / 1 / 1 ) の混合溶媒 1 0 0m lの混合物を 1 3時間加熱還流させた。 次に触媒を濾 過により除去した後、 トルエン 1 5 0m lで抽出し、 得られた有機層を水で 3回 洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し、 得ら れた残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィ一 (溶出液:ヘプ夕ン /トルエン = 8/2) に付して、 粗製の 4一エトキシ— 2, 3, 3 ' — トリフルォロビフエ ニル 1 7. 3 gを得た。 (収率: 8 6. 2 %)
このものは、 これ以上の精製を行わずに次の反応に使用した。
(第二段) 4一エトキシ— 2, 3, 3 ' — トリフルオロー 4' - ( 1 ーヒドロキ シ一 2— (4一プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ビフエニルの製造
前段で得られた 4一エトキシ一 2, 3, 3 ' 一 トリフルォロビフエニル 1 0. 0 ( 3 9. 6mmo 1 ) のテトラヒドロフラン (THF) 5 0m l溶液中に s e c—ブチルリチウム 3 8m 1 ( 1. 0 4 M、 シクロへキサン溶液、 3 9. 6 mm 0 1相当) を一 6 0°C以下を保ちながら滴下し、 滴下終了後、 同温度で 1時間攪 拌した。 反応液に 4—プロピルフエニルァセトアルデヒド 6. 3 g ( 3 6. 0m mo 1 ) の THF 3 0m l溶液を - 6 0 °C以下を保ちながら滴下し、 同温度で 1 時間攪拌した。
反応液に希塩酸 2 0 0 m lを滴下した後、 酢酸ェチル 1 0 0m lで抽出した。 得られた有機層を希炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液で 2回、 水で 3回洗浄した後、 無 水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し、 得られた残澄をシリ 力ゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー (溶出液:ヘプタン/酢酸ェチル = 8/2) に 付して、 粗製の 4一エトキン— 2, 3, 3' 一トリフルオロー 4' ー ( 1 —ヒド 口キシ— 2— (4一プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ビフエニル 6. 1 gを得た。 (収率: 4 1. 4 %)
このものは、 これ以上の精製を行わずに次の反応に使用した。
(第三段) 4一エトキン一 2, 3, 3 ' — トリフルォロ— 4' - ( 2— (4ープ 口ピルフエニル) ビニル) ビフエ二ルの製造
前段で得られた 4—エトキン— 2, 3, 3' —トリフルオロー 4' 一 ( 1ーヒ ドロキシ— 2— (4一プロピルフエニル) ェチル) ビフエニル 6. 1 ( 1 4. 8 mmo l ) 、 p— トルエンスルホン酸 '一水和物 0. 3 gおよびトルエン 5 0m 1の混合物を、 留出してくる水を抜きながら、 2時間加熱還流させた。 反応終了 後、 希炭酸水素ナトリウム水溶液で 2回、 水で 3回洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネ シゥム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し、 得られた残澄をシリカゲルカラム クロマトグラフィー (溶出液:ヘプタン/トルエン = 6/4 ) に付して、 粗製の 4一エトキシ一 2, 3, 3 ' 一 トリフルオロー 4' ― (2— (4—プロピルフエ ニル) ビニル) ビフヱニル 2. 8 gを得た。 (収率: 4 9. 1 %)

2, 3, 3' 一 トリフルオロー 4' ーメ トキシメ トキシー 4—プロピルビフエ 二ル 〔 0触媒存在下、 2, 3—ジフルオロー 4一プロピルョ一ドベンゼンとジ ヒドロキジ (3—フルオロー 4—メ トキシメ トキシフエ二ル) ボランとのクロス カップリ ング反応によって得た。 〕 1 0. 0 g ( 3 2. 2 mm o l ) 、 メタノ一 ル 5 0 m 1および濃塩酸 1 0m lの溶液を 3時間加熱還流させた。 反応液に水 5 Om lを加え、 ジェチルエーテル 1 0 0m lで抽出した。 得られた有機層を希炭 酸水素ナトリウム水溶液で 2回、 水で 3回洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上 で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去して、 粗製の 2, 3, 3' 一 トリフルオロー 4 ' —ヒ ドロキシー 4—プロピルビフエ二ル 8. 5 gを得た。 (収率: 9 9. 8 %)
このものは、 これ以上の精製を行わずに次の反応に使用した。

(第二段) 2, 3, 3' — トリフルオロー 4' 一 (4—ェチルフエニル) メ トキ シー 4一プロピルビフエ二ルの製造
水素化ナトリウム 0. 7 g ( 6 0%油性、 1 8. 0 mm 0 1相当) およびジメ チルホルムアミ ド (DMF) 3m 1の混合物中に、 前段で得られた 2, 3, 3' 一 トリフルオロー 4' —ヒドロキシ一 4—プ αピルビフエ二ル 4. 0 g ( 1 5. Ommo 1 ) の DMF 2 0m l溶液を室温で滴下し、 同温度で 1時間攪拌した。 次いで、 反応液に 4ーェチルー 1ーョ一ドメチルベンゼン 5. 5 g (22. 5 mmo 1 ) の DMF 2 0m l溶液を室温で滴下し、 同温度で 1時間攪拌後、 3時 間加熱還流させた。 反応終了後、 反応液を水 5 0m 1中に注ぎ、 トルエン 1 5 0 m lで抽出した。 得られた有機層を希水酸化ナトリウム水溶液で 3回、 水で 3回 洗浄した後、 無水硫酸マグネシウム上で乾燥した。 減圧下に溶媒を留去し、 得ら れた残渣をシリカゲルカラムクロマトグラフィー (溶出液:ヘプタン Zトルエン = 7/3) に付して、 粗製の 2, 3, 3 ' 一 トリフルォロ— 4' 一 (4一ェチル フエニル) メ トキシ一 4—プロピルビフヱニル 2. 3 gを得た。 このものをエタ ノール 酢酸ェチル ( 7 3) 混合溶媒から再結晶して標題化合物 1. 9 gを得 た。 (収率: 3 3. 3 %)

この液晶組成物 (F) を一 2 0°Cのフリ一ザ一中に放置したところ 3日でスメ
クチック相が出現した。
このことから本発明の化合物が、 公知の化合物と比較して低温下でスメクチッ ク相を示しにくいことがわかった。
本発明の液晶性化合物は極めて高い電圧保持率および低いしきい値電圧を有し、 それらの温度依存性が極めて小さく、 スメクチック相を示しにくいうえ、 他の液 晶材料との相溶性が改善されている。 また、 本発明の液晶性化合物は置換基等を 適当に選択することにより、 所望の物性を有する新たな液晶性化合物を提供する ことができる。
産業上の利用可能性
従って、 本発明の液晶性化合物を液晶組成物の成分として用いることにより、 極めて高い電圧保持率を有し、 その温度依存性が極めて小さく、 低いしきい値電 圧、 適切な大きさの Δ ηおよび△ £を有し、 安定性および他の液晶材料との相溶 性に優れている新たな液晶組成物を提供することができ、 これを用いて I P S方 式や V Α方式などの優れた液晶表示素子を提供することができる。
