Abstract

An authentication card or tag (1) comprises a laminate (2, 3, 4) which bears a hologram (5) viewable at an obverse thereof and whose reverse is provided by a light-transmitting ply (4) of the laminate which overlies artwork viewable through that ply. The reverse comprises a figured light-refracting surface (6) of that ply or a light diffracting layer thereof whereby the perceived image of said artwork alters according to the angle at which it is viewed.

Description

AUTHENTICATION CARD OR TAG
This invention relates to an authentication card or tag.
The problem with which the present invention is concerned is that of the counterfeiting or imitation of branded goods. This problem is well recognised in these times and it costs manufacturers of repute large sums of money in lost profits and in policing the problem, and it may well result in damage to the reputation of the original manufacturer's goods since the imitations are generally of inferior quality. The problem is particularly acute for the manufacturers of goods which are sold at or towards the upper end of the price range of goods of the kind in question.
It is an object of the present invention to provide means whereby the ultimate purchaser, and indeed the retail supplier may reassure him- or herself that goods are authentic and not inferior imitations.
According to the present invention, there is provided an authentication card or tag which comprises a laminate which bears a hologram viewable at an obverse thereof and whose reverse is provided by a light-transmitting ply of the laminate which overlies artwork viewable through that ply, said reverse comprising a figured light-refracting surface of that ply or a light diffracting layer thereof whereby the perceived image of said artwork alters according to the angle at which it is viewed.
Such a card or tag can be produced quite inexpensively, and is difficult to counterfeit. One tag may be provided with each sales unit of the manufacturer's goods and can afford to the retail customer the assurance that the goods which he or she is buying are the genuine goods of the manufacturer in question and not inferior imitations. Such card or tag may for example be enclosed in any packaging of the goods, preferably in such manner that the obverse at least of the tag is visible through the packaging, or it may be attached to the goods .
The card or tag is preferably punched with a hole whereby it may be attached to goods, for example using a plastics, e.g. nylon, tie, or a loop of chain.
The card or tag suitably bears such artwork, which may be in the nature of trade mark material, as the manufacturer may care to apply to it. Such artwork may be applied to the obverse of the laminate in addition to the hologram. The hologram itself may be, and it is envisaged usually will be, a logo or other trade mark associated with the manufacturer of the goods to which the tag is to be attached.
The figured reverse of the laminate may take various different forms. The figuring is preferably a regular figuring, and such figuring may take the form of microprisms, parallel grooves constituting an array of parallel prisms so that the cross-section of such surface is saw-toothed, or concentric, e.g. circular, grooves forming a surface somewhat in the nature of a Fresnel lens. Such can be readily embossed into a surface of a plastics sheet by a method known per se .
Alternatively, or in addition, a hologram may be embossed on the reverse. Such reverse may alternatively, or in addition comprise a three-dimensional hologram. Either of such holograms may be an embossed foil hologram and it may be a stereogram or sequence of frames. Such a hologram may alternatively be a silver halide film, a photo-polymer film, or a dichromate gelatin.
The number of different images which may be resolved is to some extent a matter of individual preference in any particular case. The maximum number of different images which may be separated depends on the quality of the printing, which is preferably performed by a lithographic technique, and on the spacing of the figuring. It is certainly possible to achieve up to twelve such separately resolvable images for an economical price, and more can be achieved, though at greater cost.
The nature of the artwork which is to be applied within the laminate so as to be viewable from the reverse may take various different forms, depending on the effect which it is desired to achieve. Such artwork may be such as to produce a quasi-three-dimensional image, or an otherwise changing image. For example, it may be linked to other promotional material which is to be associated with the goods in question in a particular advertising campaign. For example such artwork may take the form of a plurality of superimposed images each of which is one of a secpjence of frames taken from a video or cinematic recording such as, purely by way of example, a sequence of still frames from a television advertisement for the product in question.
By varying the angle at which such sequence of still frames is viewed, a short sequence of the moving image may be "played" .
It is also envisaged that a plurality of such cards or tags bearing otherwise identical artwork may be distinguished by each bearing a unique member of a series of alpha-numeric characters. In addition to alleviating the problem of counterfeit or spurious goods which is achieved by the present invention as a result of the difficulty of forging an identification or authentication card or tag because of the combination of hologram and multi-image artwork in a laminate provided by this invention, serial numbering of such cards or tags affords considerable benefits in the detection of stolen goods to which they may be attached. A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a view of the obverse of an authentication card in accordance with the invention,
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view on the line II-II of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a view of the reverse of the card of Figure 1.
In the drawings, an authentication card or tag 1 comprises a three-ply laminate 2, 3, 4. Incorporated into the laminate is a hologram 5 viewable through transparent ply 2 which defines the obverse of the laminate. The reverse of the laminate is provided by a ligh -transmitting ply 4 which overlies artwork which may be printed on a central ply 3 of the laminate and which is viewable through that ply light- transmitting ply 4. The reverse of the card or tag 1 comprises a figured light-refracting surface 6 of that ply or a light diffracting layer thereof whereby the perceived image of said artwork alters according to the angle at which it is viewed.
Such a hologram 5 may be a silver halide film, a photo- polymer film, or a dichromate gelatin, or it may be am embossed hologram.
The card or tag is punched with a hole 7 whereby it may be attached to goods, for example using a plastics, e.g. nylon, tie, or a loop of chain.
The card or tag suitably bears such artwork, which may be in the nature of trade mark material, as the manufacturer may care to apply to it. Such artwork may be applied to the obverse of the laminate in addition to the hologram as show . The figured reverse of the laminate may take various different forms. It may be contained within the body of the laminate 1 or exposed at the reverse surface The figuring is preferably a regular figuring, and such figuring may take the form of microprisms, parallel grooves constituting an array of parallel prisms so that the cross- section of such surface is saw-toothed, or concentric, e.g. circular, grooves forming a surface somewhat in the nature of a Fresnel lens. Such can be readily embossed into a surface of a plastics sheet by a method known per se .
Special optical effects may be achieved by using different shapes of grooves, both as regards their profile, which may for example be V-shaped or rounded and symmetrical or asymmetrical, and as regards their plan which may be circular as aforesaid, or elliptical or polygonal.
Alternatively, or in addition, a hologram 8 may be embossed on the reverse ply 4. Such reverse may alternatively, or in addition comprise a three-dimensional hologram. Either of such holograms may be an embossed foil hologram and it may show a stereogram or sequence of frames .
It is also envisaged that a plurality of such cards or tags bearing otherwise identical artwork may be distinguished by each bearing a unique member of a series of alpha-numeric characters such as is indicated by reference numeral 9 in Figure 3. In addition to alleviating the problem of counterfeit or spurious goods which is achieved by the present invention as a result of the difficulty of forging an identification or authentication card or tag because of the combination of hologram and multi-image artwork in a laminate provided by this invention, serial numbering of such cards or tags affords considerable benefits in relation to stolen goods to which they may be attached by assisting in the tracing of the way in which they were removed from the possession of the lawful owner.

Claims

CLAIMS :
1. An authentication card or tag which comprises a laminate which bears a hologram viewable at an obverse thereof and whose reverse is provided by a light- transmitting ply of the laminate which overlies artwork viewable through that ply, said reverse comprising a figured light-refracting surface of that ply or a light diffracting layer thereof whereby the perceived image of said artwork alters according to the angle at which it is viewed.
2. An authentication card or tag according to claim 1, wherein the card or tag is punched with a hole whereby it may be attached to goods .
3. An authentication card or tag according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the figuring is a regular figuring.
4. An authentication card or tag according to any preceding claim, wherein said hologram is constituted by an embossed foil hologram, a silver halide film, a photo- polymer film, or a dichromate gelatin.
5. An authentication card or tag according to claim 3, wherein the figuring takes the form of microprisms, parallel grooves, or concentric, e.g. circular, grooves.
6. An authentication card or tag according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the figuring is constituted by an embossed foil hologram.
7. An authentication card or tag according to any preceding claim, wherein the perceived image of said artwork which alters according to the angle at which it is viewed is derived from a sequence of still frames or a three- dimensional image .
8. A set of authentication cards or tags according to any preceding claim each of which bears a unique member of an alpha-numeric sequence.
