Description

DEVICE FOR COMPUTER MONITORS
TECHNICAL FIELD
The present invention relates to a device for a computer monitor, comprising a flat sheet of essentially stable form, intended to be fitted so that the sheet protects the screen of the monitor from light and observation
BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION
Work at display devices has increased steadily during the last twenty years, and at present the majority of office workers sit daily in front of computers This makes demands on the working environment in the form of light, on the one hand from lamps and on the other from daylight. The problem of light conditions in workplaces with display devices has been studied by the Swedish Agency for Administrative Development, at which a technical standard was drawn up, No 18: 1 issued on 10 10 83, in which standard it is described how a workplace is to be organized for the best working environment, principally when designing new workplaces.
However, altering workplaces and lighting conditions in older office premises is not always so easy. Reflections on the screens and great light contrasts between the screen and the surroundings give rise to difficulties in reading the screen and seeing how different colours and shades look in graphic design and the like, leading to eye trouble and irritation, in short a poor working environment One way of overcoming the problem is screen filters which are placed in front of the screen. This reduces reflections somewhat but does not remove them completely, especially not sidelighting, while making the screen darker These are thus not entirely optimal
Another aspect of using computers in public areas or office landscapes is integrity and secrecy. In many public environments such as post offices, banks and the like, it is not desirable for unauthorized persons to be able to acquaint themselves with information on the screen. In some cases the screen is placed under the counter or sunk into it, with light problems and ergonomic problems as a consequence. Other solutions are to place a filter in front of the screen, which filter implies that it is not possible to see what is on the screen unless one is looking from directly in front These screens give a certain secrecy protection, but give no protection against light reflections
Other aspects of integrity protection are the portable computers which are very popular with businessmen who travel a lot, offering the advantage that it is possible to work while travelling. The disadvantage is that fellow passengers sitting alongside, for example in an aeroplane or train, are able to read the screen, which is not always desirable. Moreover, lighting and daylight are a problem on aircraft and trains as the lighting often consists of a spotlight which shines from directly above and daylight from the side. Since the screens on portable computers are often relatively faint, this gives rise to difficulties in reading the screen.
For stationary computers, shields have been developed for certain large computer screens used in the printing industry and graphics processing in the form of hoods which are fitted on the computer screen These are designed for a specific screen and only fit that screen, meaning that the shields are manufactured in small series and are thus expensive. As far as the inventors are aware, no shields have been developed for portable computers.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The object of the present invention is to remedy the above problem. This is achieved according to an aspect of the invention by a device for a computer monitor comprising a flat sheet of essentially stable form, characterized in that the device comprises a number of fold notches arranged in the sheet, in that the sheet has a central section and two side sections separated by the fold notches, fastening elements arranged on the sheet and fastening elements arranged on the computer screen with which the device can be fastened detachably to the computer screen, so that the central section of the sheet is oriented protruding above and in front of the computer monitor's screen, the side sections are folded down by means of the fold notches and are oriented protruding at the sides around and in front of the computer monitor's screen.
According to another aspect of the invention, a device is obtained which is characterized in that the central section and the side sections also comprise tongues which protrude to the rear, that the transition between the respective tongue and section is arranged with a fold notch and that the tongues are arranged with fastening elements in that when the device is fitted, the tongues are folded around the back of a portable computer screen and affixed to fastening elements on the back of the screen.
According to another aspect of the invention, the device is manufactured from cardboard in which the fold notches are folds in the material and the fastening elements are Velcro fastenings. With a device according to the invention, a simple, well-functioning protection against light and observation is obtained.
Further aspects and advantages of the present invention will be clear from the detailed description of a few embodiments and from the following claims.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
In the following description of a few conceivable embodiments, reference will be made to the enclosed drawings, of which
Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of the device according to the invention intended for computer monitors for stationary computers,
Fig. 2 shows the device according to Fig 1 , unfolded,
Fig 3 shows another embodiment of the device intended for portable computers, and
Fig. 4 shows the device according to Fig. 3 unfolded.
DESCRIPTION OF A PREFERRED EMBODIMENT
Figs. 1 and 2 show a conceivable embodiment of the device according to the invention This comprises a sheet 10 of a material of essentially stable form. The sheet 10 is divided by way of a number of fold notches 12 into a central section 14 on the one hand and two side sections 16 on the other. The fold notches 12 between the central section 14 and the side sections 16 are preferably more than two and arranged parallel to one another. The sheet 10 is also provided with fastening elements 18, in the embodiments shown Velcro fastenings. They are arranged on the central section 14 and on the side sections 16. Fastening elements 20 in the form of Velcro are also arranged on a computer monitor 22 at the top and at the sides. These Velcro fastenings 20 are preferably formed as elongated strips
When the device is to be affixed to a computer monitor, the fastening elements on the central section 14 are pressed firmly against the fastening elements on the top side of the monitor. The side sections 16 are then folded down along the fold notches 12 and the fastening elements on the side sections affixed to the fastening elements on the sides of the monitor. The device now protects against light both from above and from the sides and against observation Due to the fact that the device has several fold notches, it can be adapted to computer monitors of varying width Due to the fact that the fastening elements on the monitor are formed as elongated strips, the device can be adjusted so that one side section extends further down than the other side, for example if a lot of sidelight is received from one side This adjustment is also facilitated by the fold notches The bands can also be placed horizontally so that the shield can be adjusted in depth
The embodiment according to Fig 3 and Fig 4 is intended primarily for portable computers The basic design is the same as for the embodiment described earlier with a central section 14 and two side sections 16 with a number of fold notches 12 between the sections According to this embodiment, the three sections are provided also with fastening components 30 in the form of tongues or protrusions in the rear edges of the sections Arranged in the transition between the tongues and the sections are fold notches 32 The tongues 30 are provided with fastening elements 18, for example Velcro fastenings A number of fastening elements are affixed to the portable computer on the opposite side to the screen, which for most portable computers means on the back of the lid, which when it is opened reveals the keyboard and the screen
The device is placed with the central section on top of the lid and the tongue is folded round the edge and affixed by the fastening element to the fastening element on the lid The side sections are then folded down by means of the fold notches along the sides of the lid and the tongues folded round the edges and affixed by means of the fastening elements With this device working protection is obtained for portable computers which protects on the one hand against light and on the other against observation Due to the simple and compact design, the device is easy to fit on the computer and easy to fold up and carry with one when the computer is not being used Other forms of fastening components are conceivable, such as the rear edges of the sections for example being arranged with fold notches and V-shaped grooves at the transition between the sections, so that the entire edge is folded around the screen and affixed
The device according to the invention can also be made of a number of different sheet materials of stable form such as plastics, cardboard etc The fold notches can conceivably be executed in various ways, such as for example moulded-in fold lines if plastic moulding is used, perforations, the different sections being joined by self-adhesive fabric or plastic tape on the top and bottom side of the joint between the sections, and bending With the device according to the invention, a simple, functional, flexible and cheap protection is obtained against light and observation for computer monitors.
A variation of the device has been produced in cardboard bifoliated with paper and in this the fold notches have been made by bending of the top and bottom side of the sheet along with gluing or riveting of pieces of Velcro. An environmentally friendly product is obtained by using cardboard. The paper which is used for bifoliation offers opportunities for designing the device in a number of different colours and patterns, advertising print or logotypes for public environments for example, according to the customer's wishes. The side of the device, when it is fitted, can also be formed in colour according to the wishes of the customer. Perhaps some will want the inside to be black to emphasize what is visible on the screen, while others will have a colour which harmonizes with the background colour of the computer program in order to avoid contrasts. Other variations of the coating can be plastic, fabric or other similar surface protection.
It should be understood that the invention is not restricted to the embodiment described above and shown in the drawings, but can be modified within the scope of the following claims
