ADDITION OF GUM ROSIN TO IMPROVE USE PERFORMANCE OF ANHYDROUS AND LOW VOC HYDROALCOHOLIC HAIR SPRAYS
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention
This invention relates to hair sprays, and, more particularly, to hair spray compositions which include gum rosin as a use performance enhancing additive therein.
2. Description of the Prior Art
Recent Legislation has required that hair spray compositions contain 80% or less VOCs (volatile organic compounds) . The high water content of such compositions has resulted in long drying times, increased tackiness and a perceived reduction in hold or stiffness. Accordingly, it is desired to provide new and improved hair spray compositions which ameliorate the negative effects of added water in low VOC hair spray compositions.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
An anhydrous or low VOC hydroalcoholic hair spray composition which includes 80% or less VOC components, and a hair fixative polymer, and, optionally water, ethanol and/or a propellant. The improvement herein comprises incorporating gum rosin therein in an amount up to about 1% by weight of the composition to enhance its use performance characteristics of reduced tack period, decreased drying time and increased stiffness.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
In accordance with the invention, there is provided a new and improved anhydrous or low VOC hydroalcoholic hair spray composition which includes 80% or less VOC components and a hair fixative polymer, and, optionally, water, ethanol and/or a propellant. The improvement comprises incorporating gum rosin therein in an amount up to about 1% by weight of the composition to enhance its use performance characteristics of reduced tack period, decreased drying time and increased stiffness.
Many hair spray compositions are known in the art which contain various fixative polymers therein. The performance of these compositions may be improved by the addition thereto of gum rosin. The invention will be illustrated herein with Gantrez® copolymers, particularly ethyl or butyl half-ester of maleic anhydride and methyl vinyl ether, and other commercially available hair fixative polymers.
Gum rosin is the residue obtained after the distillation of turpentine oil from the oleoresin tapped from living trees. Gum rosin is available commercially from AKZO Coatings Inc., Baxley, GA.
EXAMPLES
A base 80% VOC pump hair spray composition having the formulation given below was prepared, and various amounts of gum rosin were added. The resultant test compositions were evaluated for total dry time and total tack period. The results are shown in Tables 1-3 below.

The results above demonstrate that the presence of gum rosin reduces dry time and tack periods.
Table 4 below illustrates the hair stiffness improvement provided with gum rosin in anhydrous hair spray compositions.
