Abstract

A cleaning and restoration system (10) for floors (11) and other hard surfaces is disclosed. The system (10) has a cleaning head (12) which can be moved across a floor (11) or other hard surface. The cleaning head (12) impinges particulate media upon the floor (11) to remove soils and provide a slip-resistant surface. The media is entrained into the air by a pressure tank (18). The media is reclaimed in a classifier (17); and the dust, soils, and other undesirable materials are filtered in a dust collector (57). A compressor (20) and a vacuum blower (22), and the other components of the system are mounted on a truck (19). A method for utilizing the restoration system (10) is also disclosed.

Claims

1. A system for cleaning a tile floor surface and/or restoring the slip resistance of a tile floor, the floor having soils and surface particles, the system comprising: a) compressor means for supplying an air stream, said compressor means being in fluid communication with an air supply conduit; b) moisture reduction means in fluid communication with said air supply conduit, wherein said moisture reduction means reduces the moisture in the air stream; c) aspirator means for entraining particulates into the air stream, said entrainment means being adjustable so that the amount of particulates entrained can be varied, said aspirator means being in fluid communication with said air supply conduit; d) abrasion means for impinging the particulates upon the floor for the removal of soils and surface particles, said abrasion means being portable, said abrasion means including an annular brush having a plurality of bristles which touch the floor, said abrasion means including an exhaust chamber in fluid communication with an exhaust conduit; e) vacuum means in fluid communication with said exhaust conduit for the evacuation of the soils and surface particles from the floor; f) classifier means for separating heavy particulates from the soils, surface

particles and light particulates, said classifier means being in fluid communication with said exhaust chamber and said vacuum means, said classifier means being adjustable so as to control the amount of heavy particulates to be recycled; g) dust collector means for filtering said soils, surface particles, and light particulates, said dust collector means being in fluid communication with said classifier means, and h) a pressure tank which stores said particulates before entrainment in the air stream, said pressure tank including vibrator means, wherein said system increases the coefficient of friction of said floor.
2. The system of claim 1, wherein said moisture reduction means comprises a water separator.
3. The system of claim 1, wherein said moisture reduction means comprises a coalescing filter.
4. The system of claim 1, wherein said moisture reduction means comprises an aftercooler.
5. The system of claim 1, wherein said system is mounted upon a truck, said truck including a power takeoff shaft which drives said vacuum means and said compressor means.
6. The system of claim 5, further comprising muffler means in association with said vacuum means.
7. The system of claim 1, wherein said dust collector means includes a plurality of cylindrical filters.
8. The system of claim 1, wherein said brush is approximately six inches in diameter.
9. The system of claim 1, wherein the particulates include garnet.
10. The system of claim 1, wherein the particulates include silicon carbide.
11. The system of claim 1, further comprising a transfer means for transferring the heavy particulates from said classifier means to said pressure tank means, said transfer means comprising: a) a transfer conduit extending between a bottom portion of said classifier to an upper portion of said pressure tank; b) a first valve means proximate said top portion of said classifier and in communication with said exhaust conduit, said first valve means being closed during transfer of the particulates; and c) a second valve means within said pressure tank, said second valve means being a check valve which, when closed, prevents flow of air and media to an upper portion of said pressure tank, said second valve means being open during transfer of the media.
12. The system of claim 11, wherein said transfer means is electrically interconnected to a switch on said abrasion means.
13. The system of claim 1, wherein said classifier 38
includes a cylindrical member from which said transfer conduit extends, said cylindrical member having an upper surface, a bottom portion of said cylindrical member having an open face, wherein said classifier further includes a plate means mounted proximate said open face and wherein the vertical position of said plate means is adjustable.
14. The system of claim 5, wherein said abrasion means, said aspirator means and said classifier means are portable and are removable from said truck.
15. The machine of claim 1, further comprising a wear tube which is positioned within said lower end of said bore, said wear tube being interconnected to said bore by releasable connection means.
16. A method of cleaning and restoring a hard surface, comprising the steps of: a) positioning a vehicle proximate a site of the hard surface, said vehicle containing the components of a restoration system, including a vacuum blower, a compressor, a pressure tank for containing particulate media, a classifier and a dust collector; b) removing a cleaning and restoration machine from the vehicle and positioning said machine upon the surface, said machine being operatively connected to an air supply conduit and to an exhaust conduit; c) engaging the power takeoff shaft of the vehicle so as to power said vacuum blower and said compressor; d) turning on said cleaning and restoration machine; 39
e) entraining the particulate media into an air stream from a compressor; and f) making repeated passes of said cleaning and restoration machine over the surface, wherein soils and surface particles are removed by impingement of the particulate media on the hard surface.
17. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of transferring the particulate media from said classifier to said pressure tank.
18. The method of claim 16, further comprising the step of adjusting an amount of particulate media which is entrained into the air stream.
19. The method of claim 18, wherein said adjustment step includes manual rotation of a knob which controls a valve controlling the air stream.
20. The method of claim 17, further comprising the step of varying the amount of particulate media which is transferred from said classifier to said pressure tank.
21. The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of adjusting the pressure under which the media is impinged on the hard surface.
22. The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of selecting the particulate media of a desired size and hardness.
