Abstract

A soil cutting device has a cylinder (1) with a cutting edge (6) which can be pressed into the ground either by standing on a footplate (4) or pressing on a handle (3) so as to cut out a section of soil or turf. When the carrying frame (3) of the device is lifted, the plug of soil or turf is carried away in the cylinder (1) and can be released at a desired point by causing a rod (8) to descend so as to lower a release plate (7) within the cylinder (1). Downward movement of the rod (8) can be caused by pressing on the plunger (9) or a plunger plate (10) above the handle (3). Another possibility is to operate a trigger handle (11) which causes a collar (13) to grip the rod (8) and move it downwardly. Release of the trigger (11) causes it to move away from the handle (3) under spring pressure for a further indexing operation. The plunger plate (10) or the trigger (11) are particularly advantgeous for use by handicapped persons who cannot use their legs. A square cylinder (1) is particularly useful for cutting pieces of turf for repair purposes.

Description

Improvements relating to Soil Cutters
This invention concerns a device which could be used to remove a section of soil or turf so as to provide a hole for receipt of plants or enabling a square of turf to be cut to be moved to a new location.
According to one aspect of this invention there is provided a turf cutter comprising an open-ended cylinder of rectangular cross-section having a cutting edge at one end and being supported by a carrying structure at the other end leading up to a carrying and support handle, a cross-member mounted above the cutting cylinder whereby the cutting edge may be driven into the ground by pressure exerted on the cross-member, and a release plate slidingly positioned within the cylinder and having a cross-section similar to the internal cross-section of the cylinder, with a rod extending from the plate up through the cross-member and terminating in a plunger plate which can be used to push the release plate down to the cutting end of the cylinder.
The device can be used, for example, to cut out an area of damaged turf and then cut a portion of good turf from another area and carry it to the damaged area for insertion into the prepared hole of the same size and shape. The plunger will then be operated to drop the cut portion of turf into the hole. Rectangular areas need to be cut so that large areas can be repaired with successive pieces of turf placed adjacent to one another. Preferably the cylinder will have a square cross-section.
The cross-member on which pressure is exerted could just be the handle of the support structure. Preferably, however, the cross-member will be in the form of a footplate positioned just above the cylinder so that the user can employ his own weight to drive the cutter into the ground by standing on the footplate. Such a footplate will ideally be an integral part of the support structure.
From a further aspect the invention provides a soil cutter comprising an open-ended cylinder having a cutting edge at one end and being supported by a carrying structure at the other end leading up to a carrying and support handle, whereby the cutting edge may be driven into the ground by pressure exerted on the handle and a release plate slidingly positioned within the cylinder and having a cross- section similar to the internal cross-section of the cylinder, with a rod extending from the plate up through the handle and terminating in an operating mechanism which can be used to push the release plate down to the cutting end of the cylinder.
Such a device will be particularly useful for handi¬ capped persons as.they can actuate the operating mechanism, which is provided in the region of the handle, after they have pushed the cutter down into the ground by pressing on the handle. Such a device could, therefore, be used relatively easily by persons in wheelchairs.
The operating mechanism could just be a plunger plate located above the handle and connected to the upper end of the rod. A moire sophisticated device would be a trigge device operable to index the rod downwardly on successiv actuations of the trigger device.
Means might be provided at the lower end of th carrying structure to enable the cutting end of the cylinde to be raised above the ground when material is being ejecte by lowering the release plate.
The invention may be performed in various ways and preferred embodiment will now be described, by way o example, with reference to the accompanying drawing whic comprises a perspective view of a turf cutting device o this invention.
The arrangement shown in the drawing incorporates cylinder 1 of square cross-section attached to the lower en of a carrying frame 2 which has a handle 3. A footplate also joins side limbs 5 of the carrying frame 2. Thi device can be used to cut a square hole in a lawn to remov either a damaged piece of turf or a piece of turf which i to be moved to another area. For this purpose the user wil place the lower edge 6 of the cylinder 1 over the area to b cut. This lower edge 6 is shaped as a cutting edge. Th user then stands .on the footplate 4 and causes the cutter t be pressed into the ground. When the carrying frame 2 i raised the plug of soil within the cylinder is carried awa with it.
Within the cylinder 1 is a release plate 7 which i caused to move upwardly as a plug of soil enters th cylinder. At the same time this causes a rod 8 to rise u from the footplate 4, carrying with it a plunger plate Pressure subsequently applied to the plunger plate 9 wi eject the plug of soil or turf from the cylinder 1. The r 8 can continue upwardly (as shown) so as to pass through t handle 3 and terminate in a further plunger plate 10 which manual pressure can be applied to push out the plug soil or turf.
At the handle end 3 there is also shown a trigg mechanism for indexing the rod 8 downwardly. If a trigg 11 is pulled up against the handle 3 it will pivot within support plate 12 and cause a collar 13 to grip the rod 8 a move it downwardly. A spring (not shown) between t support plate 12 and the collar 13 and around the rod automatically returns the trigger 11 to the position sho when hand pressure is released so that a further indexi operation can be carried out. The plunger plate 10 trigger arrangement 11 could be more convenient for use a handicapped person in a wheelchair. For a device sole for use by handicapped persons whose legs cannot be used t footplate 4 would be unnecessary.
Where the cutting device is to be used for cutti holes in the ground for planting purposes the shape of t cylinder 1 can be modified as desired. Potential uses a for creating holes of predetermined shapes or sizes receive roots of plants, or seedlings, or seeds, or f receipt of plants removed from plant pots of particul shapes.
