Abstract

The invention relates to a means (10) for fixing sheet electronics elements (22) against a wall in a cavity (24). The means comprises a cover shaped main body (12) with clamping elements (14) extending therefrom, each clamping element having a projection (16), which, when the clamping elements (14) are inserted in the cavity (24), are arranged to pretension the clamping element by bending the clamping elements inwards. The cavity wall is provided with a notch (28) into which the projection (16) of the respective clamping element (14) snaps when the clamping element is inserted completely into the cavity (24). An engagement portion (18) of each clamping element (14) is brought into contact with the sheet element (22) when the projections snap into the notches to clamp the sheet element against the cavity wall.

Description

Means for fixing electronics elements in sheet form

The present invention relates to means for fixing electro¬ nics elements in sheet form, such as power semiconductors or power semiconductors mounted on a substrate, against a wall in a cavity.

When mounting sheet electronics elements, such as power semiconductors or power semiconductors mounted on a sub¬ strate, on a heat sink for example or other supporting sur¬ faces, screws or adhesives are often used. If such electro- nics elements are to be mounted in confined spaces, for example in a relatively small cavity in a heat sink, the known methods of mounting are unsuitable.

One purpose of the present invention is to suggest a new aid to make possible simplified fixing of sheet electronics elements in cavities with an even contact pressure. In order to solve this problem, the fixing means according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a main body with at least one clamping element extending therefrom, which has a projection, which when the clamping element is inserted into the cavity is disposed to slide against the wall of the cavity and thus pretension the clamping element ■ by the clamping element being bent inwards in the cavity, said projection on the clamping element being disposed to snap into a notch in the wall of the cavity due to the pretensioning of the clamping element when the clamping element is fully inserted into the cavity, an engagement portion of the clamping element being arranged to be brought into contact with the sheet electronics element to clamp the same to the cavity wall.

Such an arrangement makes it possible to clamp sheet elec¬ tronics elements quickly and simply against the cavity wall by resiliant clamping elements as the ridges snap into the respective notches in the cavity. Suitably, the main body portion has pairs of opposing clam¬ ping elements, with the engagement portion made on an end portion of the clamping element which is located on the side of the projection which is remote from the main body. The projection is shaped so that when the clamping element is inserted into the cavity, the engagement portion is lifted up so that it can pass over without touching the edge of the sheet element before it is brought into clamping contact with the sheet element when the projection snaps into the notch. This prevents any displacing force from being exerted on the sheet electronics element before it is clamped in place.

According to an essential feature of the fixing element according to the invention, the main body is made as a cover with an edge portion lying outside the clamping element to seal the cavity, said edge portion of the cover being co¬ ordinated with a circumferential seal. Thus the opening of the cavity can be sealed tightly at the same time as the sheet electronics element is clamped securely. The distance between the cover and the respective projection is such that the seal is held compressed between the cover and the sur¬ face against which the edge portion of the cover is to be pressed when the projection is snapped into the notch and the engagement portion clamps the sheet electronics element.

The invention will be described in more detail below with reference to the accompanying drawing, where:

Fig. 1 is the side view of a fixing means according to the invention in its detached state and in the form of a cover provided with clamping elements;

Fig. 2 shows the fixing means of Fig. 1 being inserted into a cavity of a body, prior to clamping a sheet electronics element securely to the cavity wall; and

Fig. 3 shows the fixing means in its completely inserted fixing position. Fig. 1 shows an embodiment of a fixing element 10 according to the invention in its free state prior to clamping sheet electronics elements into a cavity. The fixing element 10 consists of a main body portion 12 in the shape of a cover, and two opposing clamping elements 14 extending therefrom.

The clamping elements 14 each have the shape of an elongated flange or a plurality of separate legs or some combination thereof.

The outside of each clamping element 14 is provided with a projection 16 in the form of a ridge. Furthermore each clam¬ ping element 14 has at its distal end an outwardly directed clamping or engagement portion 18. The main body 12 and the clamping elements 14 are preferably made in one piece, for example by extrusion of a suitable plastic material or by extrusion of aluminium, so that the clamping elements 14 will have a suitable elasticity and resilience. Possibly, the resilient force of the clamping elements 14 directed away from each other can be increased with the aid of a com- pression spring (not shown) which is mounted between the clamping elements, for example by fixing the ends of the compression spring in respective depressions 20 behind each ridge 16.

Figs. 2 and 3 show in more detail the function of the fixing element 10 for clamping a sheet electronics element 22 to the wall of a cavity 24, rectangular in cross section, in a body 26, for example a heat sink for power electronics elements.

The clamping element 14 and its ridge 16 are dimensioned and placed relative to the shape of the cavity 24, so that the ridge 16, when the clamping element 14 is inserted into the cavity 24, is caused to slide against the cavity wall so that the clamping elements are bent resiliantly inwards far enough so that the engagement portion 18 of each clamping element 14 can pass, without touching, past the edge portion of the sheet electronics element 22 which has already been placed at its intended place in the cavity. When the ridge 16 of each clamping element 14 has been inserted far enough so that it reaches the associated notch 28 in the wall of the cavity, the ridge 16 snaps into the notch by virtue of the pretensioning of the clamping element 14. At the same time the engagement portion 18 of the clamping element 14 is brought into clamping contact with the sheet electronics element 22 by movement essentially transverse thereto at, for example, one location spaced from the edge from the sheet element.

In the example shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the edge portion of the cover 12 is provided with a circumferential seal 30, the distance between the cover 12 and the ridge 16 being such that the seal is compressed a suitable amount between the cover 16 and the surface against which the edge portion of the cover is pressed, when the ridge 16 snaps into the notch 28, whereby it is possible to obtain a hermetic seal of the cavity 24 at the same time as the sheet electronics element 22 is clamped securely in place.

Figs. 2 and 3 show only one fixing element 10, but it is of course also possible, with a through hole in a body, to insert an identical fixing element 10 into the opposite cavity opening to fix the opposite side portion of the sheet electronics element 22. It is of course also possible to fix at the same time two or more sheet electronics elements against the cavity wall in a body with a single fixing ele¬ ment 10.

Claims
1. Means for fixing electronics elements (22) in sheet form, such as power semiconductors or power semiconductors mounted on a substrate, to a wall in a cavity (24), c h a r a c ¬ t e r i z e d in that it comprises a main body (12) with at least one clamping element (14) extending therefrom, which has a projection (16) , which when the clamping element (14) is inserted into the cavity (24) is disposed to slide again¬ st the wall of the cavity and thus pretension the clamping element (14) by the clamping element being bent inwards in the cavity, said projection (16) on the clamping element
(14) being disposed to snap into a notch (28) in the wall of the cavity due to the pretensioning of the clamping element when the clamping element is fully inserted into the cavity (24) , an engagement portion (18) of the clamping element (14) being arranged to be brought into contact with the sheet electronics element (22) to clamp the same to the cavity wall.

Means according to claim l, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the main body (12) has a plurality of, preferably symmetrically spaced, clamping elements (14) , intended to be inserted simultaneously into the cavity (24) to clamp at least one sheet electronics element (22) therein against a respective portion of the cavity wall.
3. Means according to claim 2, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the clamping elements (14) are arranged pairwiεe oppo¬ site to each other.
4. Means according to one of claims 1-3, c h a r a c t e ¬ r i z e d in that each clamping element (14) has the shape of an elongated flange.
5. Means according to one of claims 1-3, c h a r a c t e - r i z e d in that each clamping element (14) comprises one or more elongated legs.
6. Means according to one of claims 1-5, c h a r a c t e - r i z e d in that the engagement portion (18) of the clam¬ ping element (14) is made on a distal portion thereof which is located to that side of the projection (16) remote from the main body (12) .

Means according to one of claims 1-6, c h a r a c t e ¬ r i z e d in that the projection (16) is made so that when the clamping element (14) is inserted into the cavity (24) , the engagement portion (18) is held lifted up so that it can pass, without touching, over an edge portion of the sheet element (22) before it is brought, as the projection (16) snaps into the notch 28, into clamping contact with the sheet element (22) .
8. Means according to one of claims 1-7, c h a r a c t e ¬ r i z e d in that the main body (12) is made as a cover with an edge portion lying outside the clamping elements (14) to seal the cavity (24) .
9. Means according to claim 8, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that a circumferential seal (30) is arranged with the edge portion of the cover (12) .

Means according to claim 9, c h a r a c t e r i z e d in that the distance between the cover (12) and the respective projection (16) is such that the seal (30) is held com¬ pressed between the cover (12) and the surface (32) against which the edge portion of the cover (12) is to be pressed, when the projection (16) is snapped into the notch (28) and the engagement portion (18) clamps the sheet electronics element (22) .
11. Means according to one of claims 2-10, c h a r a c t e ¬ r i z e d in that a compression spring means is tensioned between opposing clamping elements (14) , preferably in respective depressions (20) behind each projection (16) .
12. Means according to one of claims 1-11, c h a r a c t e ¬ r i z e d in that the main body (12) and the clamping ele- ments (14) are made in one piece, preferably of extruded material, particularly extruded aluminium.
