Abstract
A ready to assemble article of furniture has at least three flat surfaced members (10, 11, 12) to be joined by mortises (13, 14) and tenons (16, 18) of a cross-sectional size and shape enabling the members to be slidably joined. The resulting joint between the first and second members enables the second member to have two positions of use. In the first position the second member, the third member can be slidably joined connected to the first member and in the second position the third member is held in place.
Claims
1. A piece of furniture comprising: a first furniture member having an outer periphery, the first member having a first mortise beginning at the outer periphery of the first member and continuing part way across the first member, the first member also having a second mortise beginning at the outer periphery of the first member and continuing at least part way across the first member to intersect the first mortise, at least one of the mortises being a self-locking mortise; a second furniture member having a first edge which is slidably engageable with the first mortise of the first member for joining the second member to the first member; and a third furniture member having a second edge which is slideably engageable with the second mortise of the first member for joining the third member to the first member, the second and third members also having complimental portions for engagement in order to lock the first, second and third members together.
2. The piece of furniture of Claim 1 further comprising a first finger extending from the second member for engaging a first slot of the third member.
3. The piece of furniture of Claim 1 in which the piece of furniture is a table.
4. The piece of furniture of Claim 1 further comprising: a third edge extending from the second member parallel to the first edge; a fourth edge extending from the third member parallel to the second edge; a fourth furniture member having an outer periphery and a third self-locking mortise parallel to the first mortise of the first member which begins at the outer periphery of the fourth member and continues part way across the fourth member, the fourth member also having a fourth self-locking mortise parallel to the second mortise of the first member which begins at the outer periphery of the fourth member and continues partway across the fourth member to intersect the third mortise, the third mortise slidably engaging the third edge extending from the second member in order to join the fourth member to the second member, the fourth mortise slideably engaging the fourth edge of the third member in order to join the fourth member to the third member, the fourth member being locked in place by the second and third members.
5. The piece of furniture of Claim 4 in which the piece of furniture is a chair.
6. The piece of furniture of Claim 4 in which the piece of furniture is a sofa.
7. The piece of furniture of Claim 4 further comprising: a fifth edge extending from the first member; a sixth edge extending from the fourth member; and a fifth furniture member having a fifth self- locking mortise for slidably engaging the fifth edge of the first member to join the fifth member to the first member, the fifth member also having a sixth self-locking mortise parallel to the fifth mortise which is slideably engageable with the sixth edge of -24-
the fourth member for joining the fifth member to the fourth member.
8. The piece of furniture of Claim 7 further comprising: a channel between the fifth and sixth mortises of the fifth member for engaging an edge of the third member.
9. The piece of furniture of Claim 8 in which the piece of furniture is a drawer.
10. The piece of furniture of Claim 7 in which the piece of furniture is a table.
