Abstract

A television receiver/decoder for scrambled satellite broadcast reception includes a descrambler (122) and a UHF modulator (124) with a selector switch (140) between them. Normally the descrambler output is applied not only to the UHF modulator but also to pin 19 of a Peritel connector (130). A control signal of 9.5 to 12 volts is applied to pin 8 of the connector to indicate that a video signal is available at pin 19. In order to enable an external descrambler (150) to be used instead of the internal descrambler (122), the external descrambler not only applies a video signal to video input pin 20 of the connector (130), but also supplies an over-voltage in excess of 12 volts to the control pin 8. On detection of this over-voltage the switch (140) is changed over to select the signal at pin 20 instead of the output of the internal descrambler (122).
