Description

Spectacles The present invention relates to spectacles including a frame, a pair of earpieces and means for connecting and articulating the earpieces to the frame.
In conventional spectacles, both with plastics frames and with metal frames provided with means for clamping the frame to the lenses, the device for articulating each earpiece to the frame coπprises a* hinge which is normally screwed on the one hand to the earpiece and on the other to the frame. This makes the fitting of the earpieces particularly laborious. In metal frames, the lens is fixed by a screw which may come unscrewed with normal use, causing the lens to fall out, quite apart from the fact that, in the case of spectacles with frames and earpieces of plastics material, the region of connection between the metal hinge and the earpiece-frame is often the site of breakages of the earpiece or of the frame.
The object of the present invention is to provide spectacles of the type specified at the beginning of the description which do not have the above disadvantages and which are simple and cheap to produce as well as simple to assemble.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by virtue of the fact that the means for connecting and articulating the earpieces to the frame comprise, for each earpiece, an engagement and articulation portion which projects from the earpiece and is adapted for insertion in a corresponding seat in the frame to connect and articulate the earpiece to the frame.
Each of the seats in the frame preferably comprises a cavity with a wall which faces the respective earpiece and has an aperture whose shape corresponds to that of the engagement and articulation portion of the earpiece so as to enable its insertion, an engagement element being slidable in the cavity and having an end portion which, in the assembled configuration of the earpiece, is in contact with the engagement and articulation portion of the earpiece, and resilient means for acting on the engagement element so as to clamp the engagement and articulation portion of the earpiece in abutment with the internal wall of the cavity after the portion has been inserted in the aperture and rotated therein in order to prevent its release.
According to these characteristics, it suffices to insert the engagement and articulation portion of the earpiece in the slot-shaped aperture and to rotate the earpiece through approximately 90 about its own axis to achieve its resilient engagement with the end portion of the slidable engagement element and thus position the earpiece in the operative configuration.
Another object of the invention is to provide spectacles of the type in which the frame has a gap in correspondence with each region of articulation of an earpiece to the frame to enable the lenses to be clamped by suitable clamping means, in which these means do not include screws or like elements which make clamping inconvenient and not completely reliable.
In order to achieve this further object, the spectacles according to the invention are characterised in that the clamping means comprise a pin connected to the engagement element and a coupling element provided with a hole complementary to the pin, the cavity forming part of a first connection portion of the frame and the coupling element forming part of a second connecting portion of the frame which faces the first so that, when the engagement and articulation portion of the earpiece is inserted in the cavity against the action of the resilient means, the pin is inserted in the corresponding hole in the coupling element clamping the frame to the respective lens.
The insertion of the engagement and articulation portion of the earpiece in the corresponding seat thus causes the simultaneous clamping of the respective facing connecting portions onto the spectacle lens, without the need for screws or like fixing elements.
Further characteristics and advantages of the spectacles according to the present invention will become clear from the detailed description which follows with reference to the appended drawings, provided by way of non-limiting example, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross section of the region in which the earpiece is connected and articulated to the frame of a pair of spectacles according to a first embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line II-II of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view of the earpiece-frame connection region of spectacles according to a further embodiment.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the detail shown in Figure 3 in the operative configuration, Figure 5 is a section taken on the line V-V of Figure 4,
Figure 6 is an exploded perspective view of the connection region between the earpiece and the frame of spectacles according to a third embodiment,
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the detail shown in Figure 6, in the operative configuration, and
Figure 8 is a section taken on the line VIII-VIII of Figure 7,
With refeence to Figures 1 and 2, a frame of plastics material indicated 10 is adapted for connection to an earpiece 12, also of plastics material, with the aid of a connection and articulation device generally indicated 14.
The device 14 comprises a housing 16, for example of metal, inserted in a seat 10a in the frame 10 and defining a cavity 16a in which an engagement element 18 is slidable. The housing 16 is fixed to the frame 10, for example by means of a transverse fixing pin 11. The housing 16 has a first end 16b, through which the pin 11 is inserted, and a second end 16c which has a transverse slot 21 whose function will be clarified in the description below. A helical spring 22 is interposed between the end wall of the seat 10a in the frame 10 and the slidable engagement element 18 and urges the engagement element towards the second end 16c of the housing 16. On opposite sides of the transverse slot 21, the inside wall of the second end 16c has a pair of semicircular, cylindrical grooves 20 whose axes are perpendicular to the slot 21. The earpiece 12 has an end portion 12a which, in the open configuration of the earpiece shown in Figure 1, is intended to abut a corresponding portion 10b of the frame 10. The earpiece 12 also has a projecting rod 24 one end of which is connected to a transverse, circular, cylindrical element 24a which is integral with the rod and has a diameter substantially corresponding to the width of the slot 21 in the housing 16. This enables the cylindrical element 24a of the rod 24 to be inserted in the housing 16 and to be locked therein by its subsequent rotation through 90 in the sense indicated by the arrow in Figure 1 to enable both the cylindrical element 24a resiliently to engage the engagement element 18 by virtue of the action of the helical spring 22 and the end portions of the cylindrical element 24a resiliently to snap-engage the semicircular grooves 20 in the end wall 16c of the housing 16. The rod 24 and the cylindrical element 24a form a substantially T-shaped unit which is adapted to achieve an essentially bayonet-type engagement.
Clearly, once assembly has been effected, the helical spring 22 prevents the accidental release of the earpiece 12 from the frame 10.
Figures 3 to 5 show a second embodiment of the spectacles according to the invention which is particularly suitable for spectacles whose frame 10 has two gaps A for enabling the lenses to be clamped. In these drawings similar elements have been indicated by the same reference numerals as are used in Figure 1.
The frame 10 has first and second connecting portions 11 and 13 respectively which face each other in correspondence with each gap A. A hollow seat 26 is connected to the first connecting portion 11 and has a substantially U-shaped cross section with respective bent side and end edges 26a and 26b. The seat 26 also has an end wall 26c which is substantially coplanar with the frame 10 and has a through hole 28 whose dimensions correspond to those of a hole 30 provided in the second connecting portion 13 of the frame 10 which is adapted to be inserted in a complementary seat in the first connecting portion 11 of the frame.
The engagement element 18 has a pin 32 whose diameter corresponds with that of the holes 28 and 30. A helical compression spring 22 is mounted coaxially with the pin 32.
As is clear from Figures 3 and 4, the cylindrical element 24a connected to the rod 24 of the earpiece 12 is inserted in the end aperture B of the seat 26, the distance between the bent end edges 26b corresponding substantially to the diameter of the circular cylindrical element 24a. The subsequent rotation of the earpiece 12 causes the resilient snap-engagement of the element 24a in the semicircular grooves 20 in the end edges 26b and the simultaneous insertion of the end of the pin 32 in the hole 28 and in the hole 30 of the second connecting portion 13 of the frame, clamping the frame to the lens (not shown) . The release of the earpiece 12 from the frame is securely prevented by the engagement between the ends of the circular cylindrical element 24a and the semicircular grooves 20.
Figures 6-8 show a third embodiment of the spectacles according to the invention in which elements similar to those in the preceding figures have been indicated by the same reference numerals. A guide element 40 is connected to the first connecting portion 11 of the frame 10 and has a dovetail-shaped coupling portion 40a which is adapted to cooperate with a complementary portion 42a of a slider 42. The latter has a cavity 44 which communicates with the exterior through a first slot 45 and a side aperture 46 for the insertion of the cylindrical element 24a connected to the rod 24 of the earpiece 12. The slider 42 also has an end portion 48 whose shape is complementary to that of the holes 28 and 30 which are analogous to those described for the second embodiment.
The end portion 48 also has a laterally projecting tooth 48a for resiliently snap-engaging the hole 30 in the second connecting portion 13 of the frame 10 (see Figure 8) in order to prevent the release of the slider 42 after assembly.
The assembly takes place with the slider 42 partially projecting from the guide 40 so as to enable the circular cylindrical element 24a to be inserted in the cavity 44. Once this has been inserted, the slider 42 is urged to slide along the guide 40 by means of the earpiece 12 and the projecting end 48 of the slider 42 is snap-engaged with the holes 28 and 30, the engagement ensuring both the locking of the slider and the clamping of the frame 10 to the lenses. In order to release the earpiece, it suffices to exert a predetermined pulling force thereon to cause the resilient release of the projecting portion 48a of the slider 42 from the hole 30 in the frame.
