Definitions

  • Another object of the invention is to eliminate the need of continuous operation of the other components of the system, meaning that the apparatus shall not require the presence of an always present pump-generated water flow but render itself for use also in systems where the pumps operate intermittently only.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the type above mentioned which is very reliable in service and, in principle, does not require any service or maintenance, naturally excepting the obvious need for periodic supply of basic material.
  • the present invention there is to the upper portion of the fluidization chamber connected a supply chamber for basic material. Further, the effective cross-sectional area of the fluidization chamber does successively increase in the direction of water flow meaning that the flow rate does correspondingly decrease whereby the particles are stratified so that the biggest particles are found in the lowermost layers and the smallest particles at the top. As the particles are consumed by being ground against each other they are successively displaced to higher levels. The material thus consumed is replaced by new material moving downwards from the supply chamber. In comparison with the apparatus previously suggested the subject of the present invention has several advantages.
  • the apparatus does essentially consist of a cylindrical vessel 1 to be interconnected between the pressure pipe from a pump and a hydrophore in a water supply system feeding a number of taps.
  • the pressure pipe 2 from the pump enters the vessel approximately at the middle between its bottom and top.
  • Via an elbow pipe 3 it is connected to a vertical pipe 4 open at its bottom end which is located a short distance above the bottom of the fluidization chamber 6.
  • the outlet 8 for treated water is, according to the embodiment here described, located at the highest point of the vessel.
  • the space inside the vessel between the top surface of the limestone particles and the water outlet form a water storage tank.
  • the fluidization chamber 6 which in this instance is of circular cross-section diverges somewhat upwards, i.e. it has the shape of a truncated cone. Only for the purpose of exemplifying suitable proportions it may be mentioned that the inner diameter of the chamber at the bottom may be about 25% of its height. The diameter at the upper portion of the fluidization chamber may be about 40% of that value, corresponding to a conicity of 5-10°. Also exclusively for illustration purposes there are now given some suitable absolute dimensions for an apparatus intended to be used in a water supply system for one or a few households. The bottom diameter may be
  • the lift force acting on the particles is proportional to the flow rate the lift will have its maximum at the bottom of the chamber and be successively lower at higher levels. It follows therefrom that, in a given apparatus operating with certain given parameters, within the particle size interval where fluidization is possible the biggest particles will be floating near the bottom of the fluidization chamber. The smallest particles within that interval will be fluidized further up in the chamber and still smaller particles will by the streaming water be transported to the supply chamber 7. During their passage through that chamber they are exposed to further friction so that, when they finally reach outlet 8, they may for practical purposes be considered completely dissolved. To sum up, the particles will float at different levels, they will be "stratified", so that the total size range of floating particles will be significantly increased.
  • the cross-sectional area of chamber 7 is that much larger than that of chamber 6 that the flow rate therein is so low that no fluidization can take place. Instead, the limestone particles will remain packed and immobile in chamber 7. This makes it possible to control and limit the process in such way that the material is consumed in chamber 6 only.
  • the efficiency of the apparatus in terms of optimized use of the limestone material is very good resulting in an extremely low consumption of the material; for a one family home of the size of order of 15 kgs annually.
